REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 10, 1911.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912. Serial No. 601,809.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW MINGAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reinforced Concrete Structures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reinforced concrete structures and more particularly to the concrete bars which are employed in reinforcing concrete beams or the like.
The object of the invention is the provision of a main reinforcing bar having convenient means for attaching the subordinate members thereto.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for attaching the subordinate members to a main reinforcing bar and for supplying said main reinforcing bar with means to prevent movement in the concrete body.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of the main reinforcing bar. Fig. 2 is a detail section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is an elevation showing the main reinforcing bar and subordinate members attached thereto. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail elevation of a modified form. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 represents the main reinforcing bar whose body is substantially circular in cross section and is provided throughout its length upon its under side with a reinforcing rib 2 and upon its horizontal sides with a plurality of longitudinal ribs 3 arranged at intervals throughout the length of the bar and having their underside provided with recesses 4 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
Intermediate the length of the ribs 3 suitable reinforcing and anti-slipping rods 5 are bridged over the upper side of the bar and connect with the upper sides of the ribs 3 and intermediate the ribs 3 are circular ribs 6 which extend around the bar and connect with opposite sides of the rib 2. These latter ribs prevent endwise movement of the bar within the concrete body in which the bar and the subordinate members to be hereinafter described, are embedded.
In the method employed of attaching the subordinate members to the main bar as shown in Figs. 4c and 5, suitable rods 7 and 8 are placed upon opposite sides of the bar beneath the ribs 3 and are extended upwardly from the bar on diverging lines and are twisted to form a single member 9 which crosses the adjoining members and is preferably interwoven therewith as shown. The end subordinate members on the bar comprise a single rod 10 which is placed over the upper side of the bar and bent downwardly on either side thereof beneath the opposite ribs 3 and then brought upwardly and its separate legs twisted into a single bar in a similar manner to the bar 9. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the subordinate members 11 are all treated in a similar manner to the end bars 10 and preferably eXtend in diverging lines from the center of the bar in each direction toward the opposite end, the center subordinate bars 12 being constructed of sepa rate bars placed upon opposite sides of the central lugs or ribs and then brought upwardly in diverging lines and twisted to form single diverging bars.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with an elongated bar, of a longitudinally extending rib secured thereto, attaching devices arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the bar at intervals throughout its length, connecting ribs for said attaching oevices bridged across the bar, means to prevent endwise movement of the bar, and shear members engaged beneath the attaching members and extending over the bar.
2. In a device of the class described the combination with an elongated bar having a substantially circular body, a longitudinal rib on the underside of said body, attaching ribs arranged at intervals throughout the twisted into single members above the antilength of the bar on opposite sides of the slipping ribs.
