ELECTRICAL FITTING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IARRY C. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electrical Fittings; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-- Figure 1 a transverse sectional view of an electrical fitting constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a plan view of the base with the rosette detached. Fig. 3 an upper side view of the rosette, detached. Fig. 4: a sectional view of the rosette partially detached from the base.
This invention relates to an improvement in electrical fittings, and particularly to connection boxes or rosettes by which one line of wires is connected with the main circuit, the object being to provide simple and convenient means by which the rosette may be readily connected with and disconnected from the housing into which the main circuits lead; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a base or housing 2 formed from porcelain or other insulating material, and adapted to be secured to the ceiling or other point. This housing is formed with an outwardly projecting annular flange 3, and on opposite sides with outwardly projecting lugs 4 to which terminal plates 5 and 6 are attached by screws 7 The inner face of the base is recessed above the inner ends of the terminals forming clearance recesses 8 and 9; and the inner end of the terminal 5 is formed with a slot 10 for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. The rosette 11 which is also formed from porcelain or other suitable insulating material carries binding-posts 12 and 13, and is formed with a central opening 1 1 through which wires may extend from the binding-posts. formed with an outwardly projecting finger 15 adapted to engage with the inner end of the terminal 6, and the binding-post 13 is slightly hooked at its upper end to engage with the inner end of the terminal 5, and in the rosette is a vertically movable latch 16 the shank 17 of which extends through the rosette and is provided at its lower end with a finger-piece 18 by' which the latch may be withdrawn. Upon the shank 17 is a spiral spring 19 the tendency of which is to hold the latch in its raised position, and the upper end of the latch is adapted to pass through the slot 10 in the terminal 5, and the edge of this latch is slightly hooked to engage with the upper face of the terminal.
To engage the rosette with the base, the finger 15 is hooked over the inner end of the terminal 6 and then the opposite side of the rosette is forced into the housing so that the hooked end of the binding-post 13 will engage with the inner end of the terminal 5, and'to permit this engagement the latch 16 will be depressed, but when the end of the binding-post is engaged with the end of the terminal 5 the latch 16 will spring upward through the slot 10 and engage with the upper surface of the terminal 5 which is locked between the upper end of the latch and the upper end of the binding-post 13. The bindingposts 12 and 13 are thus in contact with the terminals 5 and 6, and the rosette firmly connected with the base. To disconnect the rosette it is only necessary to pull downward upon the fingerpiece 18 to withdraw the latch from engagement with the terminal 5, when the rosette can be turned downward releasing the binding-post 13 from the terminal 5 and permitting the finger 15 of the binding-post 12 to be disengaged from the inner end of the terminal 6.
