CORNER-PIECE FOR FRAMES.
Speclcation of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912.
Application tiled August 19, 1911. Serial No. 644,994.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. Kimm, a citizen of the United States, residinar at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and tate of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in GornergPieces sion'. Las.. of? c'o This invention relates to a corner p iece o for screen frames, and has for its principal object to provide a holder of integral construction, ivhich may be conveniently and economically formed from sheet metal, for
securing, in 'rigid relation, the horizontal and vertical strips of the traine.
Another object is to provide corner pieces so constructed that they may be firmly connected to the sides of the frame between the outer and inner faces thereof, so that the screen franie may be planed or reduced in size to correspond to the opening of the window frame.
The invention includes a corner piece for securing together the terminals of the horizontal and vertical strips of a frame, said corner piece being formed by incising a small, square, metallic sheet to provide two side plates with terminal outer and inner flanges, said side plates being adapted to embrace the sides atthe terminals of the strips, and rovidiiig a bridge to span the space near t ie junction and between the inner faces of the horizontal and vertical strips, the terminal outer ilanges of the side plates engaving within channels` or slots formed in the sides of the strips, the inner flanges and free edges of the bridge bearing upon the inner faces of said strips.
The invention consists of the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts as described hei-ein and claimed, and as illustrated in the drawing wherein,-
Figure 1 isa perspective view of a corner piece embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the inner end or side of the saine. Fig. 3 is a side view of the horizontal and vertical strips of a frame with the corner piece mounted thereon. Fig. 4 is u transverse section on line a a. of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view showing a square metallic sheet incised to form the corner piece.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, the adjacent, terminal portions of the an ularly disposed horizontal and vertical strips of a frame are respectivelv indicated at 6 and 7, said strips preferab y being rectangular in crosssecton and provided with grooves or channels 8 to form longitudinal portions b outward] of the grooves, these portions bei fr provided .so that ,ftlie 4 ainemay-afterward ijcdiie fffaiii'peniigwi'tljin whi To provide a corner piece for securin' together the ends of strips 6 and 7, l emplby a shown best in Fig. 5, mcised diagonally on alining lines c c and c c from two of its opposite corners in directions of its middle, to forni the two triangular side plates 9 and 1 0, and in'cised ne'ar its middle on adjacent lines c f, at right. angles to lines c c, to provide u bridge member 11, plates 9 and 10 being bent on the broken parallel lines f f and e e at right. angles to the bridge niember; plates 9 and 10 near their outer edges are then bent inwardly as indicated by the broken lines c g c to form the outer longitudinal flanges 12; and four inner, triangular flanges 13 are formed by bending portions of plates 9 and 10 inwardly on the broken lines f i and e h. The comer piece thus formed provides a ver strong construction, and when inountei in operative position, plates 9 and 10 embrace the sides of the frame strips, flanges 1:2 being seated within grooves S, the inner flanges 13 en gagng the inner faces of the strips, bridge member 11 spanning diagonall the space adjacent to the terminals and tween che inner faces of the horizontal and vertical frame-strips.
It is obvious that after the corner piece is mounted as described, flanges 12 and 13 and bridge 11 will operate to resist any stresses or strains tending to change the angular relation of the frame stri Practically no material is cutto waste 1n forming the cor ner piece, substantially all of the square sheet shown in Fi 5 being utilized to form the side plates, bridve and tlanoes. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen tliat, i 'hen the sheet is incised and bent as described, wings or projections j are formed which extend outwardly of and to reinforce the bridge and the free edges of the bridge are ada ted to make contact with the inner faces o the frame strips.
In practice, the corner pieces are mounted upon the frames at the time of manufacture, and keepers or nails 14: are at that time single, substantially square, metallic sheet,V

bein seated in the channels its inner iianges engaging c inner faces o the strips, said bri v the space adjacent to the ternimals diagonally between the inner faces of said frame strips.
2. In combination with the singularly ds posed strips of a frame, .said strips having grooves formed in their sides, a corner piece therefor consisti 0f of substantially parallel, adjacentg-trinng r plates integrally connected by a bridge member and provided with outer and inner inturned flanges; said corner ieceadapted to be disposed with its triangui frame strips, its outer flan es being seated in said grooves, its inner nges en aging the inner faces of said sti-lips, said ridge member extending diagona y between and ha 0' its ends bearing upon the inner faces of sai frame strips.
3. Incombinstion with the horizontal and vertical strips of a frame, a comer piece 'comprising a metallic sheet incised and bent to form side plates with wings and with' r plates embracing the sides of the` miente,
outer and inner nected brid adapted to transverse flanges and a con memberg said corner piece ave a mounting with its side plates embracing the sides of the frame end bent to form triangiili'ir plates for' n seating upon the sides of said strips, and a transverse brace for s ra corner piece-A Ptlieifefinr.comprising iisrneitaliic.slieetdneseiL panning the space tween and near the Junction of the' inner?v faces of said strips, said side plates having wings extendinfr outwardly of the brace for engavement wiili the sides of said strips.
5. n combination with the horizontal and vertical strips of a frame, a corner piece therefor, -comprising a metallic sheet incised and bent to form triangular side plates withterminal wings and a transverse bridge; said side plates adapted to. have sentings 'upon the sides of the strips to dis ose said' bridge adjacent to tlie junction an between the inner faces of said stri s, said wings projecting outwardly of the ridge for eiigagement with the sides of said stri n testimony whereof I have n ized my signature in presence of two witnesses.
