JACKSON DAVIS, or ATHENS, rumors.
ACETYLENE-GAS LAMP;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAcKsoN DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Menard and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Gas Lamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in acetylene gas lamps and particularly to gas lamps for the use of miners.
One object of the invention is to provide a lamp of this character having an improved construction and arrangement of water feeding mechanism whereby the feed of the water to the carbid may'be regulated and the generation of the gas thus controlled.
Another object is to provide a miners acetylene gas lamp which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, eflicient and reliable in operation and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other object-s in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of my improved lamp; Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 3 is a top plan view; Fig. 4: is a detail view of the tubular water cut-ofi tube; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the water controlling valve.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the carbid receptacle and gas generating chamber of the lamp the upper end of which is closed by a screw cap 2 formed on the lower end of a water tank 3. The tank 3 has in its upper end a filling opening 4: which is normally closed by a screw plug 5.
In the bottom of the tank adjacent to one side of the same is formed an upwardly extending offset 6 which provides a gas dome 7 over the generating chamber 1. In one side of the tank and communicating with the dome 7, is fixed a burner tube 8 in which is arranged a burner tip 9. Secured to the opposite side of the tank from the tube 8 is a hook 10 whereby the lamp Specification of Letters Patent.

may be secured to a miners other support.
Arranged in the tank 3 is a centrally dis posed water-feeding tube 11 the upper end. of which projects through and a slight distance above the top of the tank and the lower end of which projects through and a suitable distance down into the generating chamber as shown. In the tube 11 near the bottom of the tank are arranged oppositely disposed water discharging passages 12. In the upper end of the tube is formed an annular series of notches 13 the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
Revolubly mounted in the feeding tube 11 is a tubular valve 14; open at its upper and lower ends and having formed therein oppositely disposed water discharging passages 15 which when the tube is turned in one direction or the other are adapted to be brought into and out of alinement wit-h the discharge passages 12 in said tube 11 whereby the flow of the water from the tank 3 to the carbid receptacle or generating chamber is regulated. On the upper end of the tubular valve 14 is arranged an elongated or diamond shaped head 16 having on its lower edge oppositely disposed teeth 17 adapted to be brought into engagement with the notches 13 on the upper end of the tube 11 whereby said tubular valve is locked in its adjusted positions. I
In the tubular valve 14: is revolubly mounted a stop or water controlling valve comprising a cylindrical rod 18 having on its upper end an operating head 19 and having formed in its opposite sides fiattened surfaces 20 which when the rod 1s turned in one direction or the other are adapted to be brought into and out of register with the passages in the tubular valve and feeding pipes thus stopping or starting the flow of water onto the carbid in the generating chamber, thereby stopping or starting the generation of the gas.
In the head 19 of the stop valve 18 are formed oppositely disposed notches 21 said notches being arranged in line with the flattened surfaces 20 of the valve whereby the position of said surfaces will be indicated.
It will be noted that the pointed ends of the head 16 on the tubular water regulating valve are in line with the water discharging passages 15 therein, said ends of the head thus indicating the position of said cap or to any passages with respect to the passages 12 in the feed tube 11, so that the adjustment of the valve may be determined for permitting the discharge of the desired quantity of water from the tank to the carbid receptacle when the stop valve 18 is open. The position of the notches 21 in the head 19 of the stop valve with respect to the pointed ends of the head 16 of the regulating valve 14 will indicate when the water is turned on or off,
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various, changes in the form, proportion and: the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle *or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my. invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the character described a water tank, a water feeding tube mounted in the tank with its upper end projecting above the top of the tank and its open lower end below the bottom thereof, having water conducting openings above the bottom of the tank,"the upper end above the tank having formed therein a series of notches, a tubular feed valve mounted in thefeed pipe having openings adapted to be brought into and out of register with the openings in the feed tube, ahead on the upper end of the tubular valve having a tooth adapted to be engaged with the notches in the upper end of the feed tube whereby said valve is held in its adjusted positions, and a water controlling valve arranged in said feed valve.
2. In a device of the character described a water tank, a water feeding tube mounted in the tank, having its lower end projecting through the bottom thereof, and having, above the bottom of the tank, water conducting passages, a tubular valve mounted in said feed tube having passages adapted to be brought into and out of register with the passages in the tube whereby the passage of water from the tank may be regulated, a head arranged on the upper end of-the tubular valve having means to indicate the position of the passages in the tubular valve with respect to the passages in the feeding tube, a water controlling valve comprising a cylindrical rod mounted in the tubular valve having oppositely disposed flattened surfaces adapted to be turned into and out of alinement with the passages in the tubular valve to open and close the same, a head on the tube, and means on said head to indicate the position of the flattened surfaces on the rod with respect to the passages in the tubular valve.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACKSON DAVIS.
