Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. CLAWSON, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA.
SPARK-ARRESTER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CI-IAnLns F. CLAwsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to spark arresters and it consists in the construction and arran gement of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of smoke stack having my improved attachment connected thereto; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 9 designates the smoke stack of a locomotive or the like having on its upper end a rib 10, to which is attached my improved spark arrester which consists of a detachable attachment having a body portion provided with a downwardly projecting annular flange 3, and an inwardly curved seat 3, said flange being slidably mounted over the rib 10, so that the curved seat 3 will rest on the rib, said flange being spaced from the stack so that the curved seat will contact with the rib, said body of the attachment is also provided with an outwardly flaring ring 2, which extends above the stack in which is formed an annular water passage 6 which diminishes in size from below upward and merges into an inwardly discharging narrow slit 7, which surrounds the inner face of the flaring ring. Connected to the annular water passage 6 through the outer side of the ring 2 is the upper end of a water supply pipe 8, the lower end of which is adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 20, 1911.

Serial No. 609,714.
be connected to a boiler or other source of water, steam or fluid supply, whereby water or-other fluid is conducted to the passage 6 from which it is discharged through the in wardly discharging narrow slit 7, in the form of a fine spray which passes through the smoke and other products of combustion as they leave the stack' thus extinguishing any live sparks or cinders. In the flange 8 are formed a series of threaded screw-holes at in which are engaged set screws 5, the inner ends of which are adapted to impinge against the stack, below the rib 10, whereby to clamp the attachment to the stack.
Having thus described my invention, what I- claim is:
A spark arr-ester comprising a stack having an external curved rib on its upper end,
a detachable attachment for the stack con sisting of a body portion having a downwardly extending annular flange, an in wardly extending curved seat, said flange being slidably mounted over the rib and spaced from the stack so that the curved seat will rest on the rib, said body also having a flaring ring which extends above the stack and provided with an annular water passage therein which diminishes in size from below upward and merges into an inwardly discharging narrow slit which encircles the inner surface of the upper end of the ring, a set screw inserted through the flange and having its inner end impinging against the stack below the rib, whereby to clamp the attachment to the stack, and a supply pipe communicating with the annular water passage.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- CHARLES F.-cLAwsoN. Witnesses J. W. BURNOP, Geo. T. KEELER.
