To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY W. SNvm-m. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Northumberland, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Shovel-Point, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a new and improved means of attaching shovel points in position, the principal object of my invention being to provide a device of this class which may be quickly and effectively held in position on a shovel and may also be removed therefrom when so desired.
A further object of my invention is to provide a shovel point of new and improved construction which may beeasily attached to or removed from a shovel in a very short time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shovel point having the construction and characteristics to be hereinafter set forth, the structure thereof, whereby the new and useful results are obtained, being set forth in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the shovel point; Fig. 2 is a partial vertical sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a plan View of the bottom of the supporting member with the point removed; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the point itself; Fig. 5 is a perspective view. of a locking key.
My device is intended primarily for use on steam shovels the number thereof which may be used depending on the size and capacity of the shovel, the invention being directed to the supporting member and the point which is adapted for use on any steam shovel.
The invention comprises a supporting member 1 and a point 2 which are firmly yet removably held in engagement with each other. The supporting member 1 has the rearwardly extending portion 3 which may be provided with a plurality of holes 4 whereby it may be attached to a shovel by any suitable means, such as bolts or rivets; the under side of the supporting member is also preferably provided with a pocket 5 easily into which the bottom of the shovel engages, the shoulder 6 engaging the bottom of the shovel. The point itself is made up of the dlvergent portions 7, 8, preferably of the contour shown in Fig. 4, the portion 8 being preferably plane while the end 9 of the top portion 7 is curved whereby it may firmly rest on top of the supporting member 1. Positioned between the divergent portions 7, 8, is the post 10, preferably integral with these portions, there being a similar post or partition 11 extending from the point of divergence of these portions for a suitabledistance beyond. The bottom portion 8 is also preferably provided with a lug 12, this lug being adapted to engage in a pocket 13 in the bottom of the supporting member 1 when the parts are assembled.
Referring particularly to Figs. 2 and 4 it is to be noted that the sides of the forward end of the supporting member 1 are convergent, the angle between these sides being equal to the angle of divergence between the portions 7, 8, of the point itself, whereby the forward end of the supporting member is adapted to be seated between these diverging portions 7, 8. supporting member is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 14, each side wall of the slot being provided with a channel 15, the post 10 of the point being adapted to be contained within the inner end of the slot 14 and the partition 11 contained between the side walls of the outer portion of the slot when the parts are assembled, the lug 12 engaging in the pocket 13 whereby the parts are held immovable.
In order to securely hold the parts together when the shovel is at work I have provided a suitable key 16 which is adapted to engage the supporting member and the point, the construction and arrangement of the parts being as follows. As shown ,particularly in Figs. 2 and 4, each of the portions 7, 8, of the point is provided with an opening 17, 17 these openings being in alinement and being preferably included between the post 10 and the partition 11 when the point is in place, as shown in Fig. 2. These openings register with the slot 14 in the supporting member 1, the distance between the inner sides of the channels 15 being substantially equal to the width of the openings 17, 17', whereby the key 16 may be driven through the openings and the slot The forward portion of the and the (parts held together, The key 16 is provide with a shoul or 19 at its lower end, the shoulder being further provided with a transversel extendin slot or recess 18; the key issuitably ta ere as shown particularly in Fig. 5 and t e openings 17, 17 in the point proper are also tapered similarly to the key so that the same may be closely inserted therein. The key is made fast in position by striking the-lug 19 in order to offset it and to bring 1t into position in a pocket 21 adjacent the opening 17 in the lower portion 8 of the key so that when the key is in this position the point is immovably secured to the supporting member. The point may be quickly removed when so desired by merely bringing the lug 19 out of the pocket 21 and back into the position shown in Fig. 5 when the key may be driven out, thereby permitting the oint to be removed and a new point inserted in position.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a shovel point made up of divergent portions with a partition and a post between them, the partition and post being suitably spaced, there being openings in the said dlvergent plortions positioned between the post and t e partition with a supporting member having a converging portion, a slot in the said portion, the said post and the said partition being adapted to be entered within the slot when arts are in normal osition, each side of t e slot being provi ed with a recess which registers with the openings in the divergent portions of the point, with a locking key passing through the openings in the slots in order to hold the parts together, the forwardend ofthe supporting member being provided with a pocket. and the rear end of the point being provided with a lug I have signed my name to thisspecification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
