To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OHALMERS S. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio,-have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Excavating- Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in excavating machines, and is particularly designed for cutting ditches of different widths to accommodate different size tile or 1pe. p The principal object of the invention is to provide a machine which is so constructed that the excavating wheel carrying cutters and buckets may be adjusted to different widths. 1
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain combinations and arrangements of the parts hereinafter described, and the novel features thereof will be distinctly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention will be understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof, and in the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an excavating wheel, constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a partial plan view, on an enlarged scale of Fig. 1, the excavating wheel being shown in section; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bearings carrying the lower pulleys, one side being shown in section; Fig. 4 is an end view of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is an elevational view of a portion of the guard; Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6, Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a fragmental sectional elevation taken on line 7 7, Fig. 8; Fig. 8 is a plan view of Fig. 7; and Fig. 9 is a front elevation of Fig. 7.
1 and 2 represent a pair of longitudinal beams which are carried by the front of the machine in suitable spaced parallel relation for support-ing the excavating wheel between them.
The excavating wheel consists of a pair of rims 3 and 4, which are adjustably connected together by means of a suitable number of bolts 5 and 6 projecting inwardly Specification of Letters Patent.

therefrom, and screwed into right and left hand threaded sleeves 7 having central fixed nuts 8 to which may be applied an ordinary wrench for rotating the sleeves to force said rims apart or draw them toward each other. Jam nuts 9 are provided on the bolts 5 and 6 for screwing against the ends of the sleeves 7 to prevent same from rotating. The outer circumferences of the rims 3 and 4 carry a series of side cutters 10 and transversely adjustable excavating buckets 11. The buckets consist of a pair of corresponding side plates 12 secured to the outer sides of the rims 3 and 4 by bolts 13 and having their outer portions bent inwardly at a right angle. as at 14, to form a bottom for the bucket. The back of each bucket comprises a pair of plates 15 having at their upper portions rearwardly bent flanges 16, which are fixed to the inner sides of the rims 3 and 4, as at 17. The joint indicated at 18 between the bottom portions 14 of the side plates 12 and also the joint between the back plates15 are covered and the plates transversely slidably connected together by a' wide angle shaped butt-strap 19, each side of which is provided with a plurality of slots 20 for re ceiving bolts 21 projecting from the bottom portions of the side plates and the back plates. Rooters 22 provided with cutting edges 23 are secured to the under sides of the bottom portions 14 of the side plates 12, and project forwardly of the front edges of the buckets.
The excavating Wheel is mounted upon pulleys 24 supported by the beams 3 and 4 and upon similar pulleys 25 carried by braced frames consisting of vertical rods 26 and cross rods 27 rigidly connected to said beams. The lower ends of the rods 26 and 27 are connected to apertured lugs 28 of pocket bearings 29, which are transversely adjustably secured together by means of right and left hand threaded bolts 30 provided with central fixed nuts 31 for turning same to force the bearings apart or draw them together in a corresponding manner with the movement of the rims 3 and 4. The bearings 29 are provided with recesses 32 extending through their outer sides, and the recesses are enlarged at the centers of the bearings to accommodate journal pins 33, which carry at their projecting ends the pulleys 25. The bearings 29 are furnished with removable caps 34.
The excavating wheel is rotated in the usual manner, as by gear wheels 35 meshing with teeth 36 carried by the rims 3 and 4t. Said gear wheels may be driven from any suitable source of power.
In order to prevent the material falling from the buckets 11* when being carried to the usual conveyer, illustrated at 37, a guard 38 is provided. The guard is transversely adjustable, and comprises a plate 39 on the inner side of which are arranged a plurality of plates 40 having a plurality of transversely extending slots 41 which receive pins 2L2 projecting from the plate 39. Lugs 43 are fastened to the plates 40 and are connected to the vertical rods 26 as indi cated at 4A. The plates 40 are adjustable transversely by means of right and lefthand threaded screws 45 which are threaded in cars 46 of connecting bars 47 fixed to said plates. The screws 45 are provided with central nuts 4.8 for turning the screws to adjust the guard to a width corresponding with the adjustment of the excavating wheel.
It will be readily seen from the construction set forth and described, that the excavating wheel may be adjusted to cut ditches of different widths, and it is to-be understood that slight changes in the details of construction and arrangements of the parts may be resorted to within. the scope of the claims.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. In an excavating machine, the combination of a plurality of rotatably mounted rims, means transversely adj ustably connecting the rims together, adjustable buckets connecting the rims, means for rotating the rims, and an adjustable guard for preventing the falling of material from the buckets, substantially as described.
2. In an excavating machine, the combination of a plurality of rotatably mounted rims, pairs of right and left hand threaded bolts projecting inwardly from the rims, threaded sleeves connecting each pair of bolts, means for rotating the rims, and transversely adjustable buckets arranged between the rims and connected thereto, substantially as described.
3. In an excavating machine, the combination of a plurality of rotatably mounted rims, means transversely adj ustably connecting the rims together, means for rotating the rims, transversely adjustable buckets carried by the rims, each bucket consisting of a pair of side plates connected to the rims and having inturned lower portions, rooters fixed to the inturned lower portions, a pair of back plates connected to the rims, and
a butt-strap slidably connecting the lower inturned portions of the side plates and the back plates, substantially as described.
' 4. In an excavating machine, the combination of a plurality of rims rotatably mounted 011 pairs of pulleys, means transversely adjustably connecting the rims together, means adjustably connecting the pulleys of each pair, adjustable buckets connecting the rims, and an adjustable guard for preventing the falling of material from the buckets, substantially as described.
In an excavating machine, the combination of a pair of frames, pairs of bearings supported by the frames, a pulley carried by each pair, means adjustably connecting each pair of bearings together, a pair of rims rotatably mounted on the pulleys, means transversely adjustably connecting the rims together, means for rotating the rims, transversely adjustable buckets arranged between the rims and connected thereto, and a transversely adjustable guard for preventing the falling of material from the buckets, sub stantially as described.
6. In an excavating machine, the combination of a pair of frames, pairs of bearings supported by the frames, a journal pin rotatably mounted in each bearing, a pulley fixed to each journal pin, means adjustably connecting the pairs of bearings together, a pair of rims rotatably mounted on the pul' leys, means transversely adjustably connecting the rims together, means for rotating the rims, transversely adjustable buckets arranged between the rims and connected thereto, and an adjustable guard for preventing the material falling from the buck ets, substantially as described.
7. In an excavating machine, the combination of a pair of frames, pairs of bearings supported by the frames, a pulley carried by each bearing, a pair of rims rotatably mounted on the pulleys between the frames, means transversely connecting the rims together, means for rotating the rims, transversely adjustable buckets arranged between the rims and connected thereto, a guard for preventing the falling of material from the buckets, the guard consisting of a guard plate, a pair of plates transversely slidably connected to the guard plate, and means for connecting said plates to the frames, substantially as described.
