anduseful Improvements in Machines for Punching Holes in Metal, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to machines for punching holes in metal, such for example assteel plates or bars or other shapes, and more especially to metal punching machines having a number of sets of dies and punches arranged in two or more spacedapart rows.
An object of my invention is to provide an efiective and durable means of holding down the metal plate or other work upon the withdrawal of the punch, or as it is referred to, stripping the work from the punches; and another object is to afiord a design and construction of machine including the said stripping device or hold-down.
Other objects will appearin the following specification.
The invention for carrying out these objects consists in the novel machine and the eiements and combinations therein shown and described in .the following specification and the drawings thereof.
In the accompanying drawings. forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front view of ametal punching machine; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on a plane extending from front to rear.
The machine showh herein for punching two or more spaced-apart rows of holes, is one comprising a reciprocating ram or head which carries and thereby operates the punches of both rows, and in connection therewith a stripper or hold-down device supported in the machines' frame and comprising a single stripper bar having parts thereof or extensions therefrom arranged for holding the work down against the withdrawal of the punches in both rows. One important feature of the invention is a single stripper or hold-down centrally located and supported in the frame of the machine in connection with a reciprocating ram orhead whose underside is recessed or cut away so as to accommodate the non-reciprocating stripper bar.
Referring now to the drawings, there is the upper surfaces of said dies forming a secured to the machine frame A. In proper each punch a device known as a and end frame parts a of a curved shape so as to afiord an upper jaw carrying the fittings of the reciprocating ram. Mounted on the lower jaw a is a lower bolster or die holder B, and on this are carried the forward rowof dies 0 and therear row of dies D,

Above gand "opposed to the dies C, D, is a punch operating ram E'fitted in a convenient manner to slide upwardly and downwardly as 1n slots indicated at e in the end frame parts a. For-reciprocating the ram there maybe employed a'shaft 6 having an exterior gear 6 driven by power in any convenient man ner,--sa1d shaft e havmg bearmgs in, the end frame parts and also in two standards 6 e locations on shaft c are mounted, for example, three eccentric disks c only two of which are seen in Fig. 1, grid surrounding said disks are three eccentri rings 6 which have downward extensions connecting them at e to the ram E, whereby the rotation of shaft .2 effects the up and down sliding movements of the ram.
The machine is shown as of a type in which the punches are operated by the reciprocating ram not through the striking of the punches by theram but through the punches .being carried directly on or with the ram in its movements or indirectly-through an interposed part. Thus F indicates a front row of punches and G a rear row, and each of the punches, for example F, is connected with the ram in the following convenient manner.
f represents a punch holder having an in- W terior socket accommodating the punch F, and. said holder is secured as by bolts directly to the reciprocating ram. In this way the downward movement of the ram carries the punch F with it and the latter being directly opposed to the die C underlying it, is caused .to force a piece of metal out of the plate X and form a hole therein.
In a punching machine of this type it is convenient to employ in connection with V gag H having a handle h for pushing it in and pulling it out, its purpose being when pushed in to stand over the head of the punch, as indicated in dotted lines in Flg. 2, and cause it to operate, and when pulled out to render the punch inoperative by affording leeway for relative upward movement of the punch with respect to the holder so that the ram and holder may descend without forcing the punch through the work.
The stripper or hold-down device of m invention is one which is adapted to hol down the work X against the withdrawal of both rows of punches F, G, and to this end I have shown a stripper or hold-down J located centrally or between the two rows of punches. The stripper J is not amovable device although it may be adjustable and it is secured to the frame'of the machine or a part thereof such as the projection j specially provided for that purpose 4 may be formed to engage the work at those points or may be provided with rows or series of extensions, such for example as the front extensions K, extending toward the front row of punches, and the rear extensions lJ,-extending toward the rear row of punches, these extensions and the stripper bar J together constituting the stripper or hold-down device of this invention.
According to the machine of this invention, there is a special relation between the stripper and the reciprocating ram. The latter has been described as of a type carrying the punches, and the heavy or body portions of the ram in their downward movements extend so nearly to the work as not to require a great length of punch and so as to give the greatest and best effect in punching and render the machine more durable than it would be with a different type of ram. On the other hand the strip:
per is shown as of a heavy stalwart construction with-considerable vertical dimension so that it may exert the very large resistance that is necessary to oppose the lifting of the punches and to properly hold down the work and strip it from the punches. The ram is shown recessed or cut away at M at its underside to a very considerable degree, thus constituting the two lower rain portions m, on, between which is the recess M. Said recess is of such size and location as to receive and accommodate the bar of the stripper J and give plenty of room for the mic, 120
rams reciprocation; whereas on the other hand. the stripper with its substantial vertical dimension is of such width and location as to be easily accommodated within the recess M of the ram. In this way all conflict is avoided between the difierent members of the machine, and at the same time all of the advantages pertaining to each member is fully retained and enhanced as set forth.
*All of the dies C, D, the punches, F, G, and the stripper extensions K, L, are seen to be of comparatively short lengthwise dimension, that is, lengthwise of the machine, this permitting longitudinal adjustment thereof, and all of said members 0, D, F, G,
K, L, are shown as longitudinally adjustable so thatthe positions of the holes may be varied and all the parts set properly to cooperate; such means of adjustment con- 'sisting of clamping bolts N for the several members with heads a engaging slots formed at n in the machine parts to which the members are secured, said bolts having nuts 91. for locking the same in place.
I do not wish to be limited to the s ecific details shown and described, as o vious modifications are possible within the spirit of my invention. 4
What I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
1. A. machine for punching holes in metal, including in combination, the machine frame, a plurality of spaced-apart rows of dies and punches, a reciprocating ram or head carrying and operating the punches in both rows, and an unelastic stripper or hold-down bar of considerable vertical dimension and rigidly held at its ends by said frame, said bar having means for holding the work against the withdrawal of both rows of punches, and said bar located centrally between two rows of punches.
2. A machine for punching holes in metal, including in combination, the machine frame, a plurality of spaced-apart rows of dies and punches, a reciprocating ram or head carrying and operating the punches in both rows, and stripper or h,olddown supported by said frame comprising a single stripper bar having means for holding the work against the withdrawal of both rows of punchesfl and said stripper bar located centrally between two rows of punches and having forward and rearward stripper eX- tensions.
3. A machine for (punching holes in metal,
including in com ination, the machine frame, a plurality f spaced-apart rows of dies and pu ches,la reciprocating ram or head carrying and operating the punches in both rows, and a stripper or hold-down supported by said frame comprising a sin gle stripper bar ha ing means for holding the work against t e. withdrawal of both rows of punches, and said stripper bar cated centrally between two rows of punches and having forward and rearward stripper extensions; and each die, punch and stripper extension being of short lengthwise dimension, longitudinally adjustable and clamped in position.
4. Amachine for punching holes in metal, including in combination, the machine frame, a plurality of spaced-apart rows of dies and punches,'a. reciprocating ram or head for operating punches in both rows,
and a single stripper orhold-down 'sup-' ported by said frame for holding the Work against the withdrawal of both rows of punches, said stripper comprising a stripper 7 bar of considerable vertical dimension 10- including in combination, the machine frame, a plurality ofspaced apart rows of dies and punches, a reciprocating ram orhead carrying and operating the-punches'in both rows, gag sockets and gags ntermediate the ram and punches, and a single strip-' per or hold-down supported at] its ends by said frame for holding the work against the withdrawal of both rows of punches, said stripper comprising a stripper bar of concutaway affording a space in which the? stripper bar is accommodated.
