' To all whoml it may concern:

Be it known that I, H. J. Dunant, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new`and useful Revolving Center- Rest for Wood-Lathes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- :Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, showing a portion broken away. t l

The object of lmy invention is to provide a suitable center-rest for gauge-lathes when turning work in which portionsare left square, and to enable others to make and use the sameI will describe its construction and operation. i

My invention is designed to be attached to the slide-rest of ordinary gauge-lathes, by means of the shank A.

The collar B revolves freely in a bearing provided in the rest G, and isbored out to receive the piece to be turned after the corners are slightly rounded.

The knife a, fixed in a stock, b, cast upon the rest,

' is arranged in front of the collar B, and so adjusted as to remove the corners of the stick sufficiently to make it a close fit in the collar.

As the slide-rest advances, the stick with its corners rounded is forced through the collar, and by its friction causes the latter to revolve with the stick in its bearing.

This holds the work perfectly steady for the finishing-cutters to operate upon, and the diiiiculty of the corners wearing away in the xed rest, thereby allowing the stock to chatterfis entirely obviated by' my invention.

- Since there is considerable end-pressure upon kthe collar B, I provide a flange, el, upon its front end resting against the bearing.

The bearing is recessed for Babbitt metal, as' shown in fig. 2, and an oil-reservoir, e, is provided at one side, from which passages o o lead to the bearing, o communicating with the bearing propel', and o with the face of the ange d, it being important, on account of the end-thrust of the stick, to keep the flange thoroughly oiled.

These passages may contain wicking, if desirable, and the oil fed gradually to the bearing-surfaces.

Thecollar'D is held in position by the metal running into the groove f.

By the use of the Babbitt metel and this arrange-` ment for self-oiling, the collar B is kept perfectly cool, though running ata high speed.`

Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure vby Letters Patent, is-

The rest-stock C, having a revolving collar, B, secured in position by means of the Babbitted bearing and groove f, and provided with a suitable` sizingchisel and oil-chamber, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
