This invention relates to the type of wire drawing apparatus, in which asdescribed in our United States Patent No. 931.971, of August 24, 1909, relating thereto the die holder supporting. the solid die may comprise a cooperating plug and cap which may have any suitable provision, such as a screw connection of any description between them to powerfully force the die portion or point into an aperture or compressing funnel and thus compress to the desired gage the constricted throat of the die which according to regular practice is located adjacent the discharge end of the diethat is in the compressing aperture.
This present invention relates especially to wire drawing apparatus of this type in which the compressing funnel is preferably given a greater angle than the portion of the die or die point which is brought into engagement therewith to promote the localized compression of the discharge end or throat of the die, the die end being if desired of reduced substantially uniform section for a considerable distance adjacent its end. so that it can be forced for a considerable distance into engagement with the compressing funnel so as to successively compress difi'erentportions of the (lie end and reduce the gage of the throat before it is necessary to remm-eand reshape't-he die end to insure its proper cooperation with the compressing funnel also if desired thedie' may be held in alinement with the cooperating compressing funnel in the cap or die holder member by forming suitable cooperating guiding members on the cap and die.

APPARATUS FOR DRAWING WIRE.

In this apparatus the die holder supporting the die may comprise aplurality of members, one of which may be formed with a suitable aperture or compressing funnel with which the die end or point adjacent the throat may cooperate. The die holder members may be provided, for example, with a screw connection of any desired description so as to powerfully force the die end into the compressing funnel to the desired extent to reduce the gage of the die throat as desired. For example, in the illustrative embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 1, the cap 8 may be provided with a compressing funnel 18 and the plug 9 may have any desired form of screw connection with the cap to force the end of the die 1 into the compressing funnel. The plug may be provided with an external screw thread 14 c0- operating with an internal thread 15 on the cap which may have a-polygonal or other non circularform of exterior so that the relative rotation of the parts may be readily Patented Jan. 30,1912. The die may also be formed with a reducedsection of considerable length adjacentits point so that it is possible toforce the die into the compressing funnel for a considerable distance a and effect a great many reductions in the gage of the throat by the successive compression of the die end before it becomes necessary to remove and turn or otherwise reshape the die end to insure Its proper operation. The die end may, for example;
' be formed with a long prismatic or preferof the prismatic or cylindrical contourindicated, it may be brought into sufficiently close engagement wit-l1 the cooperating guide passage 17 to maintain the die in alinement in this way, although of course it is not necessary in all cases to provide these two sets of cooperating guiding members on the die and cap or die holding mem ber formed with the aperture or compressing funnel. The plug which may have the mouth 10 and gradually contracting axial passage through which the wire. is drawn in operation may also be provided with a suitable follower 12 to engage the die head 6 and force the die dicated.
In the modified construction shown in Fig. 2, the cap 8 may as indicated be formed with the conical compressing funnel 18 with which the end of the die 1 may be forced into engagement by the cooperating plug 9. The die may as indicated inthis instance be held in alinement by suitable guiding members formed 011 the die and plug in which a suitable seat or shallow hole 13 may be formed to cooperate with asuitable guide flange 5 on the die head 6. The die may in this instance be formed. with the usual slightly tapering axial passage terminating-in the throat 2 and may be formed adjacent its forward end point forward as inwith a reduced section in the form of a tapered or substantially conical point, preferably having a less angle than the tapered compressing funnel so as to eifecta defi nitely localized compression as the die point is forced forward. A number of successive reductions in the gage of the throat may be made in this way before 1t becomes necessary to take the die from the holder and remove tapered or cylindrical compressing funnel 18 while the die 1 may be formed with a reduced section die body 4: which may be cylindrical at the discharge end 7 when first forced into engagement with the compressing funnel, so that there is the desired difference of angle between the compressing funnel and the cylindrical reduced. body of the diewhich may if desired be adjacent its discharge end. It is, of course, understood that the inward wedging of the die end by the funnel SIICCGSSl'VQlY reduces the. constricted discharge throat 2 of the die and simultaneously gives that part ofthe die end which has been forced against the compressing funnel a corresponding tapered or conical form. In this instance the alinement of the die with respect to the holder may be effected by forming the cap with a suitable guide passage 1? with which the cylindrical body 4 may cooperate to give a suitable guiding or alining action and also if desired suitable guide members or a continuous guide flange 5 may be formed on the die as indicated in dotted lines to co operate with a correspondingly shaped guide hole 16 in the cap as thedie is pressedforward by the engagement between the die head 6 and the follower 12 on the plug 9. If desired, however, the guiding means may merely comprise a suitable guide flange adjacent the rear end or head. of the die and a cooperating guide hole or seat in one of the die holder members. As is shown in Fig. 4, the, die 1 may be-provided with a guide flange 5 adjacent its rear end cooperating with a guide hole 16 shown in this instance as formed on the cap 8, although of course this is not necessary in all cases. Int-his instance the die may be initially provided with the tapered die point 3 which may as indicated have substantially the same angle as the compressing funnel 18 in the cap and the die may have the reduced cylindrical die body 4 adjacent its discharge end so as to allow a considerable amount of successive compression and regaging of its throat 2 before other reshaping is necessary. It will be understood that by forming the guiding alining members adjacent the die head or rear of the die the forward portion of the .die is left free and objectionable sticking or cramping in the die holder minimized. a
Having described this invention in con nection with a. number of illustrative embodiments, forms, proportions and arrangements of parts, to the details of which disclosure the invention is not of course to be limited, what is claimed as new and'what 25 is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims, which 1n some cases broadly cover a form of construction in which the die may be formed" integrally wit-h or permanently attached ,'to one of the members of the die holder, as is illustrated in our eopending application, 536,431, filed January 4, 1910, which specificallyclaims this construction.

In wire drawing apparatus, a die holder comprising a cap provided with a compressing funnel and a cooperating plug, a separate die having a constricted throat ad- 'j acent its discharge end supported by said die holder and having a reduced section tapering die point adjacent its discharge end cooperating with said compressing funnel to successively locally compress said die body and correspondingly contract the throat of the die on the compressing movement of said die holder and cooperating guiding members formed on said cap and on said die adjacent the rear end thereof to maintain said die in alinement with said compressing funnel.

In wire drawing apparatus, a die holder comprising a plurality of cooperating members, having means to cause a compressing movement between them, one of said members being provided with a compressing funnel and with a guide and .a die supported by said die holder and having a reduced section portion cooperating with said compressing funnel and guiding means on said die cooperating with said guide on said member.
16. In wire drawing apparatus, a die holder comprising a cap provided with a compressing funnel and a cooperating plug,
a die having a constricted throat adjacentits discharge end supported by said die holder and having a substantially uniform reduced section die body adjacent its discharge end coiiperating with said compressing funnel to successively locally compress said die body and correspondingly contract the throat of the die on the compressing movement of said die holder and cooperating guiding members formed on said cap and die to maintain them in alinement. I

In wire drawing apparatus, a die holder comprising a cap provided with a compressing funnel and a cooperating plug, a die havinga constricted throat adjacent its discharge end supported by said die holder and having a reduced section diepoint oooperating with said compressing funnel and I compressing movement of said die holder and guiding means on said cap and die to maintain them in alinement.
18. In wire drawing apparatus, a .die
holder comprising a plurality of cooperating members, having means to cause a compressing movement between them, oneof said members being provided with-a compressing funnel, a die supported bysaid die holder and having a reduced substantially uniform sectionportion cotiperating with said compressing funnel and adapted to be successively locally compressed thereby and the corresponding die throat contracted by the movement of the members constituting said die holder.
