PATENT OFFICE.
WILLARD o. ELDRIDGE, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CAR-DOOR-OPERATING DEVICE.
Application filed April 21, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \ViLn-mn C. ELonmGn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door-Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to devices for opening and closing the doors of cars, particularly to that type of closed front-exit door which is opened and closed by the motorman, my object being to provide simple and strong connections which the motorman may operate with his feet to open and close the door, thus leaving his hands free to control the car at all times.
With this in mind my invention resides in the features of construction and arrangement shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through the front platform of a car provided with my improved connections, certain parts being broken away for the purpose of better illustration, and Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the portion of the car shown in Fig. 1.
The door A of the character to which this invention relates slides between stationary frames B and C, when opening, and in accordance with my improvements I provide the inner vertical edge of the door A with a spaced bracket 5 between which, and the edge of the door, extends a transverse pin 6 locked through the bifurcated upper and angular end 7 of a lever 8, the opposite lower end of which projects downwardly through a slot 9 in the car platform D and is secured upon one end of a rock shaft 10. This rock shaft is journaled transversely beneath the car platform I) through one of the longitudinal car beams E and through a bearing block 11, and is provided with oppositely extending cranks 12 and 13 extending therefrom upon opposite sides of the bearing block 11, the crank pins 14 of which are engaged by the slotted rear ends of levers 15 and 16. These levers, as shown, are intermediately pivoted at 17 upon brackets 18 secured to and depending from the car platform, and to the Copies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1912.
Serial No. 622,548.
thereof are pivotally connected the lower ends of vertically slidable foot- pieces 19 and 20, extending upwardl through and above the car platform D. Thus with the door closed as shown in Fig. 1, the foot-piece 1.) is depressed to rock lever 15 upon its pivot 17 and communicate rocking movement to the shaft 10 by means of the connection between said lever and the crank 12 of said shaft. The rocking movement of shaft 10 causes the door connected lever 8 to swing rearwardly between the car frames B and C, carrying the door A with the same, to its open position.
The connections which I have thus described are simple and strong, and so arranged that they will operate with very little effort on the part of the motorman, and this effort being confined to a movement of his feet permits free use of the hands for the sole purpose of controlling movement of the car, at all times.
I claim:
1. The combination with a sliding door, of a vertically swinging lever havlng its upper end in movable engagement with a portion of said door, a horizontal rock shaft to which the opposite end of said lever is connected, intermediately pivoted levers connected at one of their ends to portions of said rock shaft, and vertically movable members connected to the opposite ends of said levers to actuate the same.
2. The combination with a sliding door, of a vertically swinging lever having its upper end in movable engagement with a por tion of said door, a horizontal rock shaft to which the other end of said lever is connected, said rock shaft being provided with oppositely extending cranks, intermediately pivoted levers having one of their ends slotted for engagement with portion of said shaft cranks, and vertically movable members connected to the opposite ends of said levers to actuate the same:
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
