VALVE-GEAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1912.
Application filed August 21, 1911. Serial No. 645,100.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO A. DONATE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and'State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Valve Gear, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valve gears for use in connection with steam engines and its principal object is to provide mechanism of this type having fewer parts than other mechanisms of a similar nature heretofore devised, the simplicity of the structure being thus materially increased without, however, reducing the efficiency of the gears.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes'in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a locomotive having applied thereto the valve gear constituting the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of parts shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a portion, of the locomotive frame and a guide yoke or bracket 2 is mounted thereon and supports one end portion of a guide rail 3. The other end portion of this rail is supported by a yoke or bracket 4 connected to the locomotive frame in any suitable manner.
The cylinder of the engine has been indicated at 5 and its steam chest at 6. Guides 7 extend from the cylinder and a cross head 8 is mounted to reciprocate therebetween, this cross head being connected to the piston rod 9 as ordinarily, and also to a pitman, not shown.
The front and rear drive wheels have been indicated at 10 and 11 respectively, and the cranks 12 and 13 of these wheels are connected, as ordinarily, by a side rod 14. The wrist pin 15 on the crank 13 has a supplemental crank 16 secured to it and extending toward the center of the wheel 11. An eccentric rod 17 has its long arm mounted upon the supplemental crank 16 while its short arm is pivotally attached to a lever 18 arranged outside of and extending across the side rod 14. In the form of the device shown in the drawing the upper end of lever 18 is pivotally connected, as at 19, to a cross head 20 which is slidably mounted on the guide 3 and is secured to the valve stem 21.
A reversing shaft 22 is journaled at each end on a lever 22 the long arm of which is supported by the journal boX of wheel 11 while its short arm is pivoted to the frame of the locomotive. This shaft has a crank arm 23 to the free end of which is pivoted one end of a link 24. The other endof the link is pivotally connected, as at 25, to the meeting ends of toggle links 26 and 27, link 26 being pivotally connected to lever 18 as indicated at 28 while link 27 is pivotally connected to rod 17, as indicated at 29. An arm 30 is extended radially from the shaft 22 and has a rod 31 attached to it whereby motion may be transmitted to said arm. and to the shaft 22 from a suitable reversing lever not shown.
It is to be understood that in a locomotive structure shaft 22 is to be provided at each end with an arm 23 and that valve gears such as heretofore described... are to be located at both sides ofthe locomotive, one of the crank arms 23 being coupled to each of the valve gears in the manner set forth. Obviously, therefore, rotation of shaft 22 will result in the simultaneous actuation of both valve gears.
With the parts arranged as illustrated in Fig. 1 the drive wheel 11, when rotating, will impart a combined oscillatory and reciprocatory movement to the rod 17 with the result that lever 18 will be oscillated about the pivot 28 as its fulcrum, and thus cause cross head 20 to reciprocate upon the guide 3 and cause desired movement of the valve within the steam chest 6. When it is desired to reverse the engine, shaft 22 is rotated so as to cause the crank arms 23 to push the link 24 upwardly and rearwardly against the connected ends of the toggle links. This will result in bodily shifting lever 18 and causing the cross head 20 to move along guide 3 to its new position. Said cross head will continue to work as before during the actuation of the rod 17 It is to be understood that the parts located at the two sides of the locomotive are exact duplicates and it is thus unnecessary to make rights and lefts in order to combine the improvements with the valves of the two cylinders of the locomotive.
The parts of the gear have been shown in the drawings arranged for use in connection with an outside admission valve.
.Where the gear is to be used with an inis thus much more simple and efiicient.
By mounting the reversing shaft 22 upon levers 22 which bear at their rear ends upon the boxes of the wheels 11, it will be seen that the movements of the links, etc., relative to the locomotive frame while the re-- versing shaft is locked against rotation, is,
reduced to the minimum and there is no danger of the valve becoming displaced during the up and down movement of the wheels 11 relative to the frame 1.
What is claimed is 1. Valve gearing including a valve cross head, a reversing shaft, a crank arm upon said shaft, a, link connected tovand actuated by the crank arm, an eccentric rod, a lever pivotally connected to said rod and to the cross head, a link connection between the rod and the link on the crank arm, and a link connection betweenthe lever and said crank arm link.
2. Valve gearing including a valve cross head, a lever pivotally connected thereto an eccentric rod pivotally connected to the lever, a reversing shaft a crank arm thereon,
Copies 01' this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
a link connected to the crank arm, and toggle links connecting said link to the lever and eccentric rod respectively.
3. The combination with a drive wheel having a crank, of a supplemental crank carried by said first mentioned crank, an eccentric rod connected to and actuated by the supplemental crank, a valve cross head, a lever connecting the rod and cross head, a reversing shaft, a crank arm thereon, a toggle connection between the lever and eccentric rod, and a link connection between the toggle and the crank arm.
4. Valve gearing including a valve cross head, a lever pivotally connected thereto an eccentric rod pivotally connected to the lever, a reversing shaft, a crank arm thereon, a link connected, to the crank arm, toggle links connecting said link to the lever and eccentric rod respectively, levers pivotally connected at one end to the frame of a sup porting structure, the other ends of said levers being adapted tobear upon the jour-- nal boxes of drive wheels, and bearings upon the levers and engaged by the reversing shaft.
5. The combination with a frame, and drive wheels, of valve gearing including a valve cross head, a lever pivotally connected thereto, an eccentric rod pivotally connect ed to the lever, levers fulcrumed at one end upon the frame and hearing at their other end upon the journal boxes of the, drive wheels, a reversing shaft journaled upon the last mentioned levers, a crank arm there on, a link connected to the crank arm, and toggle linksconnecting said link to the lever and eccentric rod respectively.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, Ihave hereto afliXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
