Referring first to the clear signal device of a Burroughs machin-e, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 ando, such signal comprises a signal arm 1210 arranged to rock on a cross shaft 1400 and under the control of the key mechanism and also of the clearing and totalizing mechanism of the machine. The upper end ofthe signal arm is operatively connected to a link or connection 1212 extending between the keyboard plates 212 and 213 and itself in turn operatively connected with an oscillating signal`1215, which is arranged to oscillate within the case 1214 on the ke 'board and provided with two dist' uisha le portions, one marked Clear an the other provided with a contrasting color such as red, for indicating non-clear or danger.
The signal arm is normally held with a yielding pressure toward the rear as to its upper end above its pivotal point 1400 but is restrained by the interference of a latch 1211 which engages a pin or stud 1250 on the signal arm. lVhenever any one of the number or value keys 291 on the keyboard is depressed, the bail, of which'the part 424 forms a side arm, as seen in Fig. 1, is rocked rearwardly by a depending lip of the keydetent strip or bar 214, as in the well known Burroughs machine, with the result that a pin or stud 1259 on the side armfl24 contacts with and releases the latch 1211 from its described engagement and permits such signal arm to subsequently move from its normal or clear position which is indicated in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2 to the non-clear position which is indicated in dotted lines in said figures, such movement being caused by the tension of the spring 1280 when the latch 1211 has not only been thus displaced, but a second interference,

In the clear condition of the parts of the signal device, the arm 1216 is positioned directly in the path of a stud 1250", projecting inwardly from the signal arm, and such arm is prevented from rocking to non-clear position so long as the arm 1216 is in said position, even though the latch 1211,. has been lifted. However, during a full operation of the machine, the arm 1216 will move upwardly at the end of the forward 'stroke of the operating handle of the machine and consequent rearward movement of the arm 813 (by reason of the engagement of a stud on said arm with the end of a slot in the link 918i), and will. return toa posit-ion in front of the stud 1250 as the handle starts on its rearward stroke (a spring 981 drawing the arm 922 forward) in case that no amount or item has been set up on the keyboard but if, on the other hand, an item has been set up and the latch 1211 thereby released, the signal arm is permitted to move to non-clear position. The arm 1210 remains in its upper position resting upon the stud 1250 against the tension of its spring 981 until the familiar total key 265 is operated or depressed, and the regular pitman 914 thereby lowered through the medium of the usual connecting link 911 when a stud 1255 on the said pitman pnt in .a position to cooperate with the bell crank lever 1213 pivoted on the lower end of the signal arm 1210, so that. during the subsequent and rearward movement of the itnian the signal arm will be moved or shi vted rearwardly below the pivotal pointy 1400, thereby permitting the arm 1216 to be rocked to its normal position in front of the stud 1250"L and restoring the signal arm to its normal position so as to be engaged by the latch 1211. The bell crank lever 1212i is connected by a spring '1.282 with the signal arm 1210, whereby one arm of said bell crank is held normally in line with said signal arm with the other arm` of said bell crank lying substantially parallel with the pitman 914. When the latter is lowered by depression of the total key this spring will yield to the pressure of the stud 1255 against the last mentioned arm of said bell crank, but when the pitman moves forward and this stud clears `the end of the bell crank the latter is restored to its normal position by the spring. lVhen the signal arm is in the position shown in solid lines in Figs. 1 and 2, thc visual signal 1215 indicates clear but utter an item has been inserted in the machine, the signal arm occupies the position indicated in dotted lines in said figures, at which time the signal exhibits its red portion, so as to iiulicate danger or nonclear', or in other words, thatdhere is an accumulation or an amount in the machine. The signal will remain in said nou-clear posit-ion until the clearing mechanism of the machine has been operated and the inachine is clear or set at zero position. lt will be understood that this clear signal device docs noty constitute. per sc, a part of my invention, but that the same is utilized for operating encontrolling the parts constituting my invention. Describing the operation of 'the machine, and starting with the same clear l condition, the parts occupy the relative positions shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2,
5 the signal arm 1210 being in its normal or clear position and the bell crank 227i being in its intermediate position abutting the slide bar212, the slots 212h and 212C being out of alinement. The depending arm 229 stands just forward of the shoulder 611;}- on the special type bar, and so when an item is now set up on the keyboard and the main shaftof the machine operated by handv or otherwise, this special type bar will rise to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and about the same time the book 625 will start on its upward movement and by the action of its rounded end against the stud 25011 will force `the lower arm of the bell crank 227i slightly to the rear against the tension of the spring 286, thereby causing the forwardfa'rm of the bell crank 227i to slightly descend," thus relieving the sliding" barf212 from the friction incident to thepressure of said bell crank thereagainst. During the still further movement of the main operating shaft of the machine, that is, during the further forward movement of the handle when themachine is manually operated, the regular hammers will be tripped, there? printing the amount set up on the keyboar and, as all the regular hammers to the right of an amount or fi re must be tripped, as before described, tg: last regular hammer,
which is the one having a notch to coperate with the pin 763, will be tripped and allowed to deliver its blow. This action removes the interference to pin 763 and as the special hammer is tri ped b reason of the removal of the special) type bar from a position of interference with its pawl 718, such special hammer will be allowed to deliver its blow, thereby printing a c at. the right hand of the amount, this being the designatin character to show that the machine was c ear. when the item or amount was put into the machine. About the same timd that the. printing action is taking place, th signal arm 1210 changes its position, co ling to rest in the osition shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 an 2 and. carrying with it the sliding bar 212i and thereby bringing the slot 212c into register with the slot 212".

The bell crank 227i remains in its rearward position during the return strolr-` of the handle until the hook 6 625, descending below the stud 250%, allows the stud and thereby said bell crank to come to the forward posit-ion shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, this result, of course, being made ossible by signal arm 1210, which has place the bar 212i in such position that its slot 212c will coincide with slot 212", there- -by allowing the up er end of the bell crank 2271 Ato pass throng 1 the slots to the osition shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. ith the return of the handle to normal position, the special type bar is carried to its lowermost pos1tion, and the bell crank 227% carries with it the swinging arm or dentent 229 to the position shown in solid lines in Fifr. 3. During subsequent listing operations o? the machine, the specialtype bar 611i will consequently have no movement whatsoever, being held in inoperative position by this arm 229. The cam surface G11-l-c will therefore render its controlling pawl 718 inoperative during the listing of all subsequent items, and its special hammer will therefore remain at rest. [bese parts will remain in this relative arrangement with respect to each other until a. total or sub-total is taken. In taking a grand total, the total key or button 265 is depressed, and the swinging arm or detent 229 brought to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 4, so as tostop or limit the upward movement of the special type bar 'to a position for printing the star, as already described.
In taking a sub-total the action is the same durin the forward stroke of the operating handlla or lever as for taking a grand total, but the' .total key is released when the handle isv nt the end of its forward stroke and is permitted to return to its normal or elevated position. At this time, the hook 100 '625 is inl the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the stud 250i is thereby retained in vits rearward posit-ion, holding the bell crank 227110 the position shown in full lines in said figure.
