" When the bag 14 is' empty or partially filledV and is over balanced by the weight 6, the shaft 31 is suitably rotated to bring the detent 29 into the position shown in Fig. 1 so that the notch 30 therein will be engaged by the pawl 25 Awhen the slide 21 is moved rearwardly against the action of the spring 24. In this connection, will be obvious that when the slide is moved rearwardly the pawl 25 will be swung upwardly by engagement with the back-of the detent 29 until the slide reaches the position shown in Fig. 1, with the opening 22 therein in alinement with the opening 18 of the hopper, when the nose of the pawl will drop by gravity into the notch 28. The cement'or other material within the hopper 17 will then flow into the bag 14 until a sufficient amount thereof has entered, the bag to overcome the action of the weight 6. The-scales will then tilt and thereby pull downwardly upon the link 33 so as to rotate the shaftifal and revolve the detent 39 into such a posil2 spring 24 will then force the slide outwardly so as to shut ofi the flow of cement'from the hopper. The bag'lcan then be removed .from the bag holding frame and another bag applied thereto, after which the slide 21 will -againbe moved rearwardly into the position shown in Fig. 1, either manually or byI any suitable mechanical means provided for that purpose.
When the machine isv utilized in connection with paper bags, 'as indicated 'in Figs.4 1 and 5, the head 15 of the bag supporting frame will be formed with a downwardly projecting annular flange 34 adapted to'have the mouth of the bag clamped thereto; Any suitablemeans may be provided. for this purpose, such as 'the curved 'levers 35 shown in 5, the rear ends of the said levers being pivoted at 36 .to the head, while the forward ends of the levers are extended outwardly at so as to be detachably connected. In the present instance one of the extensions 37 is provided with a spring 28 provided with a hook 39 adapted to engage an eye 40 in the opposite extension. With thisconstruction it will be obvious that'the clamping levers .35 can be quickly drawn together so as to engage the mouth of a bag and hold it in proper position, or separated to releasethe mouth of the bag.
A modification adapted to be `employed in connection with bags madennof cloth or fabric is shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8. In this 'construction 'a' -pair of, substantially semi# circular bag engaging members 41 are ap plied to the bottom of the head 15,`- the in termediate portions 'of the members 41 being for the opening 16, andone` end of the said members 41 -being pivoted to the head 43, while' the. opposite end of each of the said members .is formed with affcurved wall44 adapted to be engaged `by ardoublecam 45. This cam is mountedupon a shaft 46 which projects upwardly through the.- head l 15 where it is provided with a handle 47. When this handle is turned into the vposition indicated in Fig. 6, the bag engaging members 41 can swing together so that the mouth of a bag can be readily drawn over the same handle 47 is turned into the position indicated in Fig. 7 so as to throw the double-cam member 45 into engagement with the curved walls 44, the members 41 will be forced apart, as indicated in Figs. 7 and 8, so as to 'engage the mouth of a bag and hold the bag securely in position.

In a bag filling device, the combination of tilting scales, a bag supporting frame mounted upon the tilting scales, a hopper arranged over the bag supporting frame so as to feed material into a bag mounted thereon, a slide for shutting off the flow of material from the hopper, yielding means normally tending to move the slide into operative position, a pawl mounted upon the slide, a rotary detent adapted to engage the pawl to lock the slide in an inoperative position, a rock shaft carrying the rotary detent and provided with a crank arm, and a link member connecting the Acrank arm to the tilting scales for rotating the rook shaft and `releasing the deten when the scales are tilted.v

In a bag filling device, the combination of tilting scales, a bag supporting `frame mounted upon the tilting scales,a hopper arranged over the bag supporting fralne so as to feed material into a bagmounted thereon,.a slide for shutting off the flow of material from the hopper, yielding imeans normally tending to move the slide into operative position, a pawl mounted upon the slide and normally tending to drop by gravity into such a position as to project below the slide, a rock shaft mounted under the slide a rotary detent carried by the rock shaft and formed with a notch adapted to be engaged by the downwardly projecting end of the pawl to hold the slide in an inoperative position, and an operative connection between the rock shaft and the over the bag supporting frame so as to feed into a bag mounted upon the same, a slide mounted upon the platform and adapted to cut off the flow of material from the hopper, the said slide being formed with a slot, yielding means normally tending to'move the slideainto operative position, a wedge shaped pawl having the reduced end thereof pivoted within the slot, the opposite end of the pawl being designed to drop by gravity into such a position as to project below the slide and Abeingforined with a lip projecting over the top4 of the slide to limit the downward movement thereof, a rock shaft mounted upon theelevated platform, a detent mounted upon the rock shaft and' formed with a-notch adapted to be engaged by the pawl to hold the slide in aninoperative position, and an operative connection between the rock Shaft and the scales for automatically releasing the slide when the scales are tilted.
4. In a bag filling device, the combination of tilting scales, a fixed superstructure arranged over the tilting scales, an upright bag supporting frame having the lower end thereof pivotally connected to the scales, the said bag supporting frame being formed with a lower shelf adapted to engage the bottom of the bag and also with an upper head having an inlet opening therein, means upon vthe said upper head for engaging the mouth of a bag, a link pivotally connecting the bag supporting frame to the superstructure for holding the bag `'supporting frame in an upright position, a hopper mounted upon the fixedsuperstructure and adapted to discharge through the vinlet opening of the upper head into the bag, and
