Description

D. W. WILHELM..
WAGON OR VEHIGLE TONGUE SUPPORT. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 25, 1911-.
1,014,928. Patented Jan.16,-1912.
I UNTTE PATENT @EFTQE DEE W. WILI-IELM, OF DE LEON, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 JOHN H. WILLIAMS, OF DE LEON, TEXAS.
WAGON OR VEHICLE TONGUE SUPPORT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEE WV. l VILHELM, a citizen of the United States, residing at De Leon, in the county of Comanche and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful ll agon or Vehicle Tongue Support, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vehicle tongue or draftbar supports, espe cially that class utilizing resiliency to relieve the weight of the tongue or draft upon the neck of the team.
The invention has for its object to carry out the aforesaid ends in a simple, effective and inexpensive manner.
The invention consists of certain instrumentalities and features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made which relate to the details of the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan.
In carrying out my invention, I suitably provide upper members and lower memhere, the former or upper members preferably including three plates designated 1, l and 2 and the latter including three plates 3, 8 and 4:- The intermediate or central plate 2 of the upper members and the corresponding plate 4 of the lower members, are each connected to the other plates of the upper and lower members, respectively, by means of suitable nut-equipped bolts 5 and 6 respectively. The respective plates of the upper and lower members are all provided with longitudinal slots for the reception of the bolts 5 and 6, the slots of said plates being designated as 2* and 4:, respectively. The end-plates of the upper-and lower members are connected by bolt-like members or stems 7 suitably held to the latter, preferably by heading their lower ends and inserting cross-pins or keys 8 through their upper ends, said bolt-like members or stems being equipped or having applied thereto springs 9 interposed between Specification of Letters Patent.

the end plates 1 and 3. This arrangement serves as a resilient buffer for the inner end of the tongue or draft-bar 10 and adjunctive parts, whereby, it is apparent that the preponderant weight of the outer or unsupported end of the draft-bar or tongue will be removed from the necks of the draftanimals, as desirable. Also by means of the bolt and slot connections between the respective upper and lower members of the device, it is accommodated to varying widths of the parts of different sized vehicles.
The device is suitably applied or secured in position upon the front vehicle-hounds, by means preferably of U-shaped bolts or keepers 11 receiving or embracing metal brace-members 12 of said hounds and passed through and held to the upper end plates 1, by nuts as shown.
It will be noted that my invention is extremely simple, therefore being inexpensive of manufacture and adapted to be readily applied for use in connection with vehicles generally without any especial fitting or adapting of the same in effecting such application, it only being necessary to effect connection between the front vehicle hounds as indicated, the device delivering its resisting action upon the inner end of the draft-bar or tongue to suitably take the weight thereof from the necks of the animals, as before stated.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described, including parallel spaced apart members, each member comprising a central plate, and end-plates, means effecting adjustable connection between said central and end-plates, means effecting the attachment of the up per end-plates to vehicle-hounds, resilient members interposed between the upper and lower. end-plates, and bolt-like members extending through said resilient members, and having their lower ends headed into said lower end-plates and their upper ends movable through said upper end-plates and means to hold said bolt-like members against displacement with respect to the latter end-plates.
2. A tongue or pole, vehicle-hounds, parallel upper and lower members, each in.- cluding a central plate and end-plates, means connecting together each central plate and two end-plates, means connecting the upper end-plates to said vehicle-hounds, reas my own, I have hereto aflixed my signasilient members interposed between said upture in the presence of two witnesses. per and lower encl-plates and bolt-like memhis hers extending through said resilient inem- DEE V. X VVILHELM. bers, and having their lower ends headed mark into said lower end-plates and their upper Vitnesses: ends movable through said upper end-plates. B. C. STAILEY,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing C. BRADSHAW.
