Letters 'Patent No. 101,484, dated April 5, 1870.
WATER-ELEVATOR.
The Schedule referred to' in these Letters Patent and making part or the same My Ainvention has for its object to furnish an improved apparatns, by means of which the heat necessarily generated in every household may be used for raisingwater from a. well or cstern to a reservoir or tank at any desired elevation, from which the said water may be withdrawn as required; and
It consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the apparatus, as hereinafter more fully described.
.A is a close cylindrical vessel, made of suitable material and of sudicientstrength to resist a pressure of about iteen pounds to the square inc-h.
B is a 'close vessel made of copper, placed in the lower part of the cylinder A, and connected with its sides by the inlet-pipe C and the outlet pipe D.
The pipe C leads from the vessel B to the upper compartment of the vessel E.
The vessl E is divided into two compartments by the partition e', through which partition there is an opening, in 'which is placed a valve, F, opening upward. l
Gis a pipe leading from the upper compartment of the vessel E to the tank or receiver, into'which the water is to be raised.
H isa. pipe leadingti'om an opening in the bottom ofthe vessel Eto the well or cistern from which the water is to be raised.
The opening in the bottom of the vessel E leading into the pipe H is provided with a valve, I, opening upward.
J is a pipe leading from the lower compartment of the vessel E t0 the upper part of the cylinder A, as shown in the drawing. l
K is a piston, fitting into and moving up and down in the cylinder A above the vessel B.
L is the piston-rod, which' projects through a hole in the top ofthe cylinder A.'
M is a valve placed in the pipe C near the cylinder A, and to the crank-handle of which is pivoted the lower end of the connecting-rod N, the upper end of v which is pivoted to the outer endof the lever O, which is pivoted to a standard, P, attached to the cylinder A in such a position that the inner end of the lever O may project over the middle part of the top of the cylinder A, so that as the piston K rises to the top of the said cylinder, the upper end of the piston-rod may strike against and raise the inner end of the said lev'er O, opening the valve M.
In using the apparatus, the cylinder A is placed upon a stove or other heat-generating furnace. The space around the vessel B in the lower part 0f the cylinder A, below the piston K, is filled with water through-the pipe R, and the stop-cock S is closed.
Enough water is then poured into the tank or receiver, into which the water is to berraised, 'to lill the pipes C and G, leaving a few gallons still in said tank.
As the water below the piston K heats up, steam is generated and raises the piston, forcing the air out of the upper part'of the cylinder A, through the pipe J into the lower compartment of the vessel E, from which it escapes through the valve F and pipe G.
As the piston K reaches the top of the cylinder A, the lever O is operated and the valve M opened, allowing the water from the pipes G and G to ow into and through the vessel B, 'condensing the steam in the cylinder A, and causing the piston K to descend, releasing the lever O, which is immediately operatedby the weight Q, to close the valve M. l
As the piston K descends, a vacuum is formed in the upper part ot' the cylinder A, pipe J, and lower compartment of the vessel E.
The pressure of the air upon the water in the well or cistern from which theewater is to be raised now forces the water up through the pipe H and valve I into the lower compartment of the vessel E, from which it flows through the pipe J, into the upper part of the cylinder A.
As the piston K again rises, the water above it is forced through the pipe J, and valve F and pipe G, into the receiver or tank, and so on as long as the heat is kept up.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as'new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is l The combination of lthe cylinder A, vessel B, pipes C G H J, vessel E e', valves F I, piston K, piston-rod L, weighted lever O, connecting-rod N, and valve M with, each other, substantially `as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
MORTON S. M CATEE.
