' .of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification. like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
v.The invention to be hereinafter described relates to looms and more particularly to looms of the filling replenishing type, wherein at times a fresh supply of filling is furnishedautomatically. Inthis type of loom ii 'uchtrouble has been experienced in properly controlling the-end of the filling threads leading'fromthe carriers in the supplying means. 'On 'the one hand, the ends of the filling threads must be held'at some point in order-that filling be-laid by the shuttle on the firstpick a t er replenishment and the Shuttle be threaded automaticallvthe "otherhand these ends are liable to be caught which they have been wound. but regardless of whether means were provided to take care of any slack occurring between the carriers in the supplying means and the stud, these thread ends when severed ator near the selvage would dangle in the path of the lay or ioker stick with consequent liability of bemg carried or thrown into the shed. Another serious objeetion resulted from the constant accumulation of waste ends about the ,stud in *that it required to be cleaned frequently, and often before the operative would get around to'clean the stud; itbecame so clog ed that the new thread ends wound on it w en the supplying means was refilled would not remain in pjroperposit-ion, thus causing misthreads when the filling. carr iersweretransfe'rred to the shuttle. At its lower portion the-hopper 5 is provided with a throat 10, Fig. 4, through which the filling carrier 11 may be forced by a transferrer'12, Figs. 1 and 4. This transferr'er may be of any desired character, its function being to force a filling carrier 11 through the throat l0 and into a shuttle atdesired times. In the present representation, the transferrer is shown as mounted on the stud or rod 7, Figs. 1 and 2, and provided with an arm13, Fig. 2, which, when the filling is to be changed, may be actuated in a manner well understood by those skilled in the art, and substaiitially as pointed out by my prior application Ser. No. 516,240. If desired also a filling carrier ositioner let, Fi 4, such as fully describ in my said app 'cati on or otherwise, may be employed to move a filling carrier into position forpassage through the throat 10. The throat has a fixed front wall 15, and a movable back wall 16, the normal dimensions of the throat being too small to permit assage of a filling carrier therethrough. n order, however, to permit a carrier. to pass through the. throat when forced downward by the transferrer, the back wall 17 of the hopper is mounted to yield. This yielding action is preferably secured by forming a lug 18 on the back wall of the hopper and pivotally mounting the lug at 19, Figs. 1 and 4, to a fixed part, such as an end wall of the hopper, so that the back wall may swing about a center preferably near its upper portion.
- The back wall may be normally retained in position as indicatedrby full lines, Fig. 4, thatis in position with the throat l0 closed to the passage of afillin carrier, by means ofa spring 20, Figs. 1 an 4, suitable uiding flanges 21 being provided to guide t e back wall 17 as it is moved. The lower ortion of the back Wall 17, Fig. 4, is turne frontward and if desired may be provided with a guidin notch to engage a lug or projection 22 on t e end frame of the hopper, the construction and arrangement being such that as the transferrer forces a filling carrier through the throat 10, the back wall of the hopper may swing about its pivotal mounting against the tension of the spring 20, and be suitably guided in its yielding action to- Ward and from the front wall of the hopper. When filling carriers are in the hopper, it will be apparent that this back and forth moyement of the backiwall will serve to agitatesuch carriers sufliciently to insure their properfmovement toward transferring osition and their passage into single line ormation in the lower part-of the hopper.

Projecting below the take-up wheel 28 and the wheel '29 is a deflector 39, Figs. 2 and 5, the edge portion of which, see. Fig. 5, projects beyond the plane passing through the end faces of the takeup wheel 28 and wheel 29. The derlcctor 39 may be of any usual or desired character, but is herein represented as extending from or between the lower part of the two guides 34: and 36,
though, as will be obvious, it may be vari-' ously formed. From the Construction dcscribed, regardlessof the particulars thereof, it'will be apparent that, if a filling end beoomasibroken and hangs downward. as
indicated in Fi 2' and 5, such filling end willpass over t e edge of the deflector 39, and as the wheels 28 and :29 rotate, as will hereinafter appear, such deflector will cause the severed end to pass from between the nip of the wheels 28 and 29 and drop downward, where such ends may be finally collected in a suitable receptacle, if desired.
As a means for causing rotation of the take-up roll 28 and perforce its coacting roll 29, the shaft 27 has secured thereto inside or the bracket 9, Figs. 1 and 3, a ratchet wheel 40, the ratchet teeth of which are adapted'to be engaged by the end of a pawl ferrer moves in transferring a carrier from the hopper to the shuttle, the lower one of these lugs will more downward and permit the arm 42 to drop downward and substantially in the line of the upper surface of the shuttle box, and, as the transferrer rises after a transfer, said lug will lift the arm 42.into its upper. position again.

From the con st-ruction thus described it will be apparent that when the transferrennnoves down in transferring a carrier from the hopper to the shuttle, the arm 42 will be lowered'and the pawl 44 will more over the ratchet 40 into engagement with the 'next ratchet tooth, whereupon, by upward movement. of said arm 512 as the transferrer returns to initial position, the shaft 2'? and perforce caused to rotate to take. up both collectively and individually the slack in the'iilling ends leading from the filling carriers. In order that the ratchet 40 and the shaft 27 may not be turned in reverse direction, there is pro vided a holding pawl-'48, Fig. 3, which, as the arm 42 and pawl ll move down to their lowered position, will hold the ratchet 40 from rotative movement but permit such ratchet to rotate contra-clockwise when the arm 42 and pawl 41 return-to initial position. Suitable stops 47 and 48 may be provided to limit the movement of the arm #2, and the stud 49 may sustain the pawl ll from dropping too far to the left when the arm 42 is lowered.
The tip ends ofthe fillingcarriers, as indicated in Fig. 3, are supported by arib 50 formed preferably as a part of the hopper. but when the filling carriers are moved in Fig. 3, and the coacting surface of the I tilting arm 51, pivoted at 52 and normally sustained in position indicated by means of a spring 53.
It. is essential at all times that neither the lay nor the picker stick or other moving partcatch upon any of the filling threads which extend'from the. hopper to the akeup or filling end controller, and as a. further means to this end the present invention provides an arm 5-4, Figs. 1 and 2, which will sustain by its upper surface any sagging thread as it approaches the plane of laying movement.
After a filling carrier has been transferred, it is important that the filling end which extends between the take-up wheel and the shuttle before it is cut or broken at the selvage of the cloth be not caught by any part connected to the lay, such as bolt heads and. other projections thereon. To

i After the loom hasoperated one or more following filling replenishment, the
icks filling end, still held between the take-up roll and roll 29, is severed or'broken at the selvage, whereupon the severed end drops downward, as indicated in Fig. 2. As the lay moves back and forth, this end portion of the filling end is liable to be caught in the shuttle box or to become entangled -there with the. shuttle .or the pickingdevices and to be carried into the shed. To guard against this, during the time that the deflector 39 is acting upon this filling end to retire it from between the wheels 28 and 29, there is secured to the lay a plate 60 having an inclined portion 61 adapted to deflect the I filling end toward the outer edge 62 of the plate and the shouldered portion 63,-Fig. 6,
the construction being such that after the end has been broken or severed at the selva such broken or severed end portion will and ride over the incline 61 to the outer edge- 62 of the plate 60 where it .will graduall move outward as the deflector 39 retires t e threadifrom between the wheels 28 and 29, as will be readily understood.
It will be apparent that many changes may be made in the details of; the present invention without departing from the gen; eral character and spirit thereof, and it 18 to '6 be understood that the invention is not re stricted to the articular means herein shown and descr bed as one embodiment thereof, but that it is definitely set forth in its true scope by the claims.
What is claimed is:

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of filling carrier supplyin means, a transferrer, a'shuttle box, a uard plate extending longitudinally of an projecting forward from the top of the shuttle box to prevent the unsevered filling from being broken, and a second guard plate extending longitudinall of the shuttle box to prevent the severed lling being thrown or carried into the shed.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a hop er for containin filling carriers, a trans rrer, a lay havmg a shuttle box, means for holdin the ends of the filling threads extending rom the carriers in the hopper, and means extending beneath the'filling threads between the hopper and said holding means for sustainin any slack filling thread and preventing itsieing caught or broken by a moving part of the loom.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combinatiom of filling carrier supplying means, a lnilding 'device' for holding the end portions of thh filling leading from the carricrs in the supplying means a shuttle box, a guard extending lon 'tudinally of the shuttle box to engage a lling end hanging from said holdin device after theend has been disconnected from the filling on the carrier, and means acting automatically to remove the hanging filling end from the loom.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of fillin carrier supplying means, a transferrer or transferring carriers from said means, means for holding the filling end that filling ma be laid in the shed as the shuttle, is picke and means acting upon a filling end after it has been disconnected from the carrier to remove the filling end from the holding means and discharge it from the 100m.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of filling carrier supplying means, a transferrer for transferring filling carriers from said-means, a take-up for taking up the slack in the filling ends, and a device acting in connection therewith for causing a filling end to be removed from the loom after it has been disconnected from the filling on the carrier. i

combination of filling carrier supplying means, a take-up for taking up slack in the filling ends leading from the supplyingmeans, means for directing the filling ends to the take-up in spread relation, and means for acting on a filling end disconnected from its carrier to discharge it from the loom.
