To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WESLEY BEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Collinsville, in the county of Madisonand State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Clothes-Line Prop, of which is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in clothes line props.

The invention has for its object to provide for varying or adjusting the length of the prop for suitably elevating the line with its contents or washed articles for drying and for lowering the same after the articles have dried, for the convenient removal of said articles.

A further object is to provide for readily effecting such adjustment of the prop for the stated purposes' A still further object is aforesaid ends in a simple, inexpensive manner.

The invention consists of certain instrumentalities and features substantially as hereinafter disclosed and defined by the claim.

Figures 1 and 2 are broken elevational views of the prop, taken at different angles. Figs. 3 and 4: are also broken elevational views thereof, viewed at corresponding angles the members or sections of the prop however, being in contracted or collapsed position. Fig. 5 is a detached perspective of the retaining and adjusting pin for the prop members or sections, and its adjunctive locking member.

In carrying out my invention, I form the same of two members or sections 1 and 2, which conjointly constitute the prop, the two members or sections being suitably coupled together by and received within sleeves or keepers to carry out the expeditious, and

3 and at, said sleeves being suitably secured to said members or sections, respectively. These sleeves or keepers 3 and 1 are applied to the prop members or sections near their upper and lower ends, respectively, as disclosed by the several figures and are adapted to snugly embrace said prop members to allow the latter to slide the following one upon, and in contact with the other, and through said sleeves or keepers. This. arrangement allows of the prop being extended or contracted as required for suitably supporting the clothes -line with its contents or. washed articles in elevated position for drying, or for lowering the same with its contents after drying, for the convenient removal of the latter as will be readily appreciated. 3 4

In order. to provide for the retention of the prop sections or members suitably eX- tended or retracted, said sections or members are provided with registering apertures or perforations 5, while one of the sleeves as 3, has produced through opposite sides thereof alining apertures or perforations 6, and through the apertures of said sleeve and any two registering apertures 5 of said prop member is inserted a pin 7. The pin 7 is itself effectively retained in place by means of av locking member or contrivance 8, the same being of frame like or approximately U-shaped outline, with its free end hook terminated or bent at a right angle as at 9, and adapted to be engaged with said pin near its projecting free end. The looking or hook ended member or contrivance 8 is loosely or freely jointed or looped as at 10 to the head or eye-end portion of the pin 7, as indicated in Fig. 5; and from this arrangement it will be seen that .the member 8 is adapted to embrace the sleeve through which the pin 7 is passed, and to engage the same upon three sides and thus provide for effectively securing the pin in position against possible casual displacement.

The lower section or member 1 of the prop is adapted to efiectively engage or enter the ground to guard against the slipping of the prop from its position, this being efiected preferably by equipping said prop section upon opposite sides with pointed metal strips or plates 11 suitably bolted as at 12 or otherwise fastened to said prop section or member, the pointed lower ends of said plates or strips being slightly inclined or deflected laterally and outwardly for obvious reasons.

The upper section or member 2 of the prop has its upper end provided with a notch or bifurcation as at 18, to receive the clothes line as in effecting engagement between the latter and the prop and to saidv end of said prop section or member is applied a suitable retaining contrivance 14;

for the retention of the clothes line in-saidforming wire in continuation is formed with bowed or arched lateral portions 17, adapted to receive and engage the clothes line laterally of the v.prop as will appear would be the case especially from Figs. 1 and 3. Said bail and lateralarch forming wire is still further extended into duplicate complemental members, conjointly forming a handle or lever 18 for the suitable actuationiof the clothes line retaining contriv-- ance or latch, as in providing for the con-, venient insertion of theclothes line into the notch or bifurcation of the prop, and its ready removal when desired. The duplicate handle member forming extensions of said wire are suitably bent at their outer ends at right angles to the lateral portions thereof and caused to freely overlap each other, whereby these handle members or extensions may be readily sprung apart or distended so that they may be swung under the stop pin 19 when the latch is placed over the line,

the-latch being thereby held against casual benefits of my invention have been made clearly apparent, it being further stated,

(however, that the'device is quite simple and inexpensive of manufacture and furnishes anarticle of greatconvenience and which is effective for its'intended purpose.

What is claimed A clothes line prop including slidably ber insertible through said prop members, said pin member having as i an adjunct thereof, a locking member loosely connected atone end to one. end of said pin, the opposite end of said locking member being adapted to engage said pin at its free end.
