Be it known that. we, HEME A. BEAvsE- .l JOUR, a subject of the Crown of Great Brithave invented a nei' and useful Improvement in Liquid-Coating Machines, of which the following 1s a specification.
The ob}ect; of our invention'is to provide certain improvements -in an article dipping.
apparatus whereby a common fluid actuated means is employed for raising and lowerl'ing a pair ot' artiele-holders, said means comprising a cylinder, a piston and means for accurately adjusting the position ot' the cylinder with Arespect to the tanks in which the article holders are dipped and tor holding the cylinder in such adjusted position.
A further object is to provide an' article 'dipiiing apparatus ot the above character 1n which the piston ot the fluid actuated means forms the sole support tor the article holders.

movably secured to the bracket arms 9, in the present instance by providing a hook latch 12 carried by one of the top cross bars 13 of each article holder, arranged to pass through a hole 1l in the bracket arm 9. These upper cross bars 13 are provided with 'clips .15 for engaging the opposite sides of the arm 9 tor maintaining the article holder with bars 1G. 17 depending from one 'of the top cross bars' 1,3, the lower ends of which bars are connected by a bottom rack 18. This bottom rack 1S is arranged to support the bottom ot' the article 19 to be dipped. The top ot'said article is held in 2O carried by a rod Q1. 'This rod 21 is made vertically adjustable by providingr the holder with straps 2Q. Q3. with holes for the reception in position. Each article holder is provided y position by one of a series of spring clips ot pins 2l. Means are provided torfaccurately adjusting the position of the cylinder l between the tanks 1, which means in the present instance comprise -a trame 2G surrounding the cylinder Q. said trame having adjusting screws Q7 leading through the trame into engagemiit with the sides of the said c vlinder.

'lhis inlet pipe 2S is provided with a brauch pipe 3l leading to the top ot the cvlinder 2 and a branch pipe Sli). leading to the bottom ot the said 'lhe tluid outlet pipe 33 is connected to the branch pipe 31 through a pipe :Hf having a manually operatedvalve 35 therein. This outlet pipe 33 is also connected to the inlet branch pipe 32 through a pipe Bti having a manually operated valve 3T therein. A manually operatedy valve 3S is located yin the branch inlet pipe 32 and a. manually operated valve. 3S) is loeatedlin the main inlet pipe 28.
ln operation, supposing the parts to be in the position' shown in full lines Fig. 1. The valves 37 and il. are closed and. the valves 218 and 35 are open. This will admit. they motive fluid to the underside of the piston 3 and open the upper side 0f the said llty l piston to the Huid outlet. This will cause the supporting bracket 6 with itsV article holders secured thereto to be raised, thus lifting the articles gradually and evenly out ofthe coating liquid within the tanks 1. After the bracket 6 has been raised to the desired point, the article holders may be detached therefrom and other holders may( be secured to the said bra'cket in position to be lowered with the articles Atherein into the tanks. To produce this latter movement the valves 35. and 38 are closed and the valves 37 and 39 opened. This will permit the mo tive Huid to enter the space above the piston 3 and open the space .beneath the said piston to vthe outlet v33. Thisarrangement' will cause the articles to be lowered into the tanks. After the articles have been left in the tanks a predetermined time, they may in turn be lifted out of the tanks in the manner hereinbefore described.,
It will be seen from the above description that thearticles are lifted out of the tanks by fluid actuated means, thus insurin a much more even and smooth movementt an has heretofore been possible where mechanical or manualr'tieans have been employed.
There has always been more or less back `lash in connection with mechanically and manually operated devices, resulting in a more or less uneven coatlng of the article as it is withdrawn from the tank. The means herein set forth insures an absolutely homoing a pair of liquid containing tanks, article holders, liuid actuated means for raising and lowering the holders, com rising a cylinder located between the taillis, its piston, means for controlling the admission and escape of the fluid to and `from. the opposite sides of .the piston and means for accurately adjusting the positionsof the cylinder with respect to the tanks and holding it in such position.

An article dipping apparatus includ- 'ing a pair of liquid containing tanks, article holders, fluid actuated means for raisingy and lowering the holders comprising a cylinder located between the tanks, its piston, means for controlling the admission and escape of the iuid to and from the opposite fsides of the piston, and means for accurat-ely adjusting the position of the cylinder with respect to the tanks and holding it in such position comprising a frame Xed to the tanks and surrounding the cylinder, and adjusting screws mounted in said frame and vfitted to engage the cylinder. f
