Patented Jan. 9, 1912.
Serial No. 645,752.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN V. ANDERSON, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marline-Spikes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to marline spikes for splicing ropes and wire cables; and it consists in the novel construction of the spike as hereinafter fully described and claimed which enables the work of splicing to be done with less labor and with greater facility.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a marline spike constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on the line w-w in Fig. 1.
The marline spike is formed of a tapering pin 2 having at one end a handle portion 3 and a ball 4 for convenience in operating it. The main .portion of the spike is substantially triangular in cross-section, having blunt or rounded angles 5, and having shallow concave grooves 6 formed longitudinally in its faces. These three longitudinal grooves 6 are all of equal depth and they are relatively shallow, the depth of each being about one-tenth of its breadth.
What I claim is:
A marline spike of substantially triangular cross-section, and having three concave faces, the concavity of each face being sub stantially one-tenth of the breadth of the face, and the said spike being tapered from its handle portion to its point.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my' signature in the, presence of two witnesses.
JOHN V. ANDERSON. Witnesses:
