QUICK-OPENING DOOR FOR VULCANIZERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Vulcamzers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in quick-opening doors for receptacles such as vulcanizers, and the object of the invention is, briefly, to provide a device by which a vulcanizer may be quickly and easily opened or closed.
The invention contemplates providing the open end of the vulcanizer with a projecting annular flange with which a detachable head, also provided with an annular flange, co6perates. The head is further provided with a pair of semi-circular locking-rings, interiorly grooved to receive the registering flanges of the head and vulcanizer for locking them together. The semi-circular locking rings are provided with means for locking them together when in their closed position and the flanged end of the vuloanizer is provided with an expansible packing ring for effecting a fluid tightjoint between the abutting portions of the head and vulcanizer.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention to be hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, varia tions and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings in which similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the different figures, Figure 1, is a view in front elevation of a vulcanizer embodying this invention, showing the door in its closed position; Fig. 2, is a view similar to Fig. 1, on a smaller scale, with the vulcanizer door in its open position, Fig. 3, is a view in side elevation with the door in its open position; and, Fig. 4, is a sectional view approximately on line X of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference numeral 1 denotes the body of a vulcanizer of ordinary construction, provided with one closed end 2 and supported by legs 3. Secured on the open end of the vulcanizer 1 is a collar 4 provided with an outwardly-extending annularflange 5, preferably larger in diameter than the diameter of the vulcanizer body. Secured preferably to the collar 4 is a frame formed of angle-iron and embodying two lateral upwardly-extending portions 6 and a crosspiece 7 preferably all formed integral. The flanges 8 of the angle-iron which form a portion of the side members 6 constitute tracks for a purpose to be later described. This frame is provided with braces 9 commonly secured to the sides of the vulcanizer body.
In the outer face of the collar 4 is formed an annular-groove 10 with the inner-wall thereof inclined at 11. Mounted in the groove 10 is a packing-ring 12 of suitable shape tofit in said groove and engage the abutting face of the vulcanizer door. The packing-ring 12 is forced outwardly against the door of the vulcanizer by means of a fluid under pressure introduced to the groove 10 through an inlet pipe 13.
The door of the vulcanizer comprises a main central convex portion 14 secured to which is an annulus 15 from which extends radially a flange 16 corresponding in diameter to-the flange 5 and adapted'to abut against the latter when the door is in its closed position. Secured to the upper'portion of the annulus 15 is an arm 17 provided with an aperture 18, to receive a rope or its equivalent 19, the upper end of which is connected to a ring or hook 20. Pivotally mounted on the rear face of the arm 17 are two semi-circular locking-rings 21 provided on their inner faces with grooves 22 of suflicientwidth to receive the abutting flanges 5 and 16 when the door is in its closed position. The free end of one of the semi-circular locking-rings is provided with a locking device 22 of any approved pattern arranged to engage and cooperate with a companion hasp 23 on the other ring. On the upper faces of the rings 21 are hooks or eyes 24 and from which extend ropes or chains 25 connecting the eyes 24 with the ring 20. It will be noted that the ropes 25 are shorter than the rope 19 for a purpose to be later described. On the rear faces of the rings 21 adjacent to the free ends thereof are rollers 26 provided with peripheral grooves of suiflcient width to run on the tracks 8 formed by the angleiron frame which is secured to the collar 1.
The operation of the device is as follows: Assuming that the vulcanizer door is to be opened, a suitable hoisting-instrumentality is applied to the hook or ring 20, and as the ring 20 is raised it separates the two locking-rings 21 by reason of the fact that the ropes 25 are shorter than the rope 19 causing the locking-rings to spread apart as shown in Fig. 2 in doing which the rollers 26 run on to the tracks 8 thus maintaining the locking-rings thereafter in their open position. After the locking-rings 21 have been spread apart the door of the vulcanizer itself will be raised by the rope 19 a sufficient distance to freely expose the open end of the vulcanizer and the parts will then be in the position shown in Fig. 2. In order to close the device the operation is reversed.
I claim:
1. A vulcanizer comprising a receptacle having one open end, a door for said vulcanizer, said door and vulcanizer having cooperating abutting portions, a separable pivotally-mounted grooved locking-element positioned to clamp the abutting portions of said vulcanizer and said door for detachably holding the latter in its closed position,
and means carried by said vulcanizer and engaged by said element tending to keep the portions thereof separated when said door is removed.
2. A vulcanizer comprising a receptacle having one open end, a door for said vulcanizer, said vulcanizer and door provided with outwardly-extending complementary abutting flanges, a pair of pivotally mounted semicircular interiorly-grooved lockingrings carried by said door receiving said abutting flanges for holding said door in its closed position, and means engaged by said rings tending to keep them separated during the removal of said door.
3. A vulcanizer comprising a receptacle having one open end, a door for said vulcanizer bodily and laterally removable therefrom, said door and vulcanizer having complementary abutting portions, clamping means embodying separable members engaging said complementary portions of said vulcanizer and door for detachably holding the latter in its closed position, and means engaged by said separablemembers tending to keep them spaced from each other during the removal of said door from said vulcanizer.

A vulcanizer comprising a receptacle having one open end surrounded by an out-- wardly-projecting flange, a door for said vulcanizer having a flange complementar to and adapted to abut against the flange on said vulcanizer, a pivotally mounted pair of semi-circularly formed locking members interiorly grooved carried by said door to receive said flanges for holding said door in its closed position, means for detachably uniting the free ends of said members, and means engaged by said locking-member tending to keep them separated during the removal of said door.
5. A vulcanizer comprising a receptacle having one open end, said end surrounded by an outwardly-extending flange, a door for said vulcanizer having a flange complementary to the flange on said vulcanizer, a pair of pivotally-mounted semi-circularlyformed and interiorlygrooved lockingmembers secured to said door and arranged to inclose said abutting flanges for holding said door detachably in its closed position, and means independent of said door and engaged by said locking members for keeping the latter separated during the removal of the door.
6. A vulcanizer comprising a receptacle having one open end, and a flange at said end, a door for said vulcanizer having an outwardly-extending flange complementary to the flange on said vulcanizer, an' upwardly-extending guiding member arranged adjacent to the open end of said vulcanizer, a pair of pivotally mounted semi-circularly formed locking members carried by said door and interiorly grooved to receive said flanges for holding said door in its closed position and means carried by said locking members and engaging said guiding member for holding said members in their open position.
7. A vulcanizer comprising a receptacle having one open end, and a flange surrounding said end, a door for said vulcanizer having a flange complementary to the flange on said vulcanizer, a pair of pivotally mounted semi-circularly formed locking members interiorly grooved to receive said flanges for holdmg said door in its closed posltlon, means for ralsmg said door to open sald vulcanizer, and means connecting said semicircularly formed members with said means tending to separate said locking members previous to the raising of said door.
8. A vulcanizer comprising a receptacle having one openend, and a flange surrounding said end, a door for said vulcanizer having a flange complementary to the flange on said vulcanizer, a pair of pivotally mounted semi-circularly formed locking members interiorly grooved to receive said flanges for holding said door in its closed position, means for raising said door toopen said vulcanizer and means connecting .said semicircularly formed members with said raising means tending to separate said locking members previous to the raising of said door, and means for malntalnlng said lock ing members in their open position when said door is moved to its open position.
9. A vulcanizer comprising a receptacle having one open end, a door for said vulcanizer bodily and laterally removable therefrom, said door and vulcanizer having cooperating complementary abutting portions and a pair of semi-circularly-formed and interiorly-grooved locking members carried by said doors and adapted to inclose and clamp the complementary abutting portions of said vuloanizer and door for detachably holding the latter in its closed position, and means engaged by said locking-member, tending to hold the separable portion thereof spaced apart from each other during the bodily removal of said door from said vulcanizer.
10. A vulcanizer comprising a receptacle having one open end, and a flange surrounding said. end, a door for said vulcanizer having an outwardly-extending flange complementary to the flange on said vulcanizer and a locking device for holding said door in its closed position comprising semi-circularlyformed pivotally mounted locking members interiorly grooved to receive said flanges carried by said door, and means for moving said semi-circularly formed members into inoperative position previous to the removal of said door from the open end of said vulcanizer.
