To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, JOSEPH GAvnLAoK, a subject of the King'of Hungary, residing at Monongahela city, in the county of Nashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooling and Filtering Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a cooling and filtering machine for beer and malt liquors prepared by the process of brewing.
v The objects of the invention are to provide a movable compact cooling and filtering machine for expeditiously and economically cooling and filtering beer without impairing the taste, color or other qualities of the beer, and to provide a machine of the above type that can be easily cleaned and maintained in a sanitary condition.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in a novel construc-' tion, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View of the machine, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the foranr inous channel rings of the machine.
A machine in accordance with this invention comprises A frames 1 and 2 connected at the lower ends thereof by transverse braces 3 and the lower ends of said frames are supported by revoluble rollers or wheels 4, whereby the machine can be easily moved.
The upper, ends of the frames are provided with bearin s 5 for hollow or tubular trunnions 6 and% having the inner ends thereof provided with plates 8 that are riveted or otherwise connected, as at 9 to oppositely disposed sides of a cylindrical vessel or tub 10. The vessel or tub 10 has a concave bottom 11 and secured to said bottom by rivets or other fastening means 12 is a central support 13 havinga vertical opening14 in communication with an opening 15 in the bottomll of the vessel. The walls of the openings 14 and 15 are screw threaded to receive the threaded upper end of an outlet elbowpipe 16. The upper end of the support 13 is provided with a central 30, for a purpose that will recess 17 and an annular shoulder 18. Seated upon the upper edges of the support 13 and extending into the recess 17 is the lower reduced end 19 of a vertical foraminous or perforated metallic cylinder 20, said cylinder adjacent to the upper end thereof having a spider 21. Extending through said spider and the cylinder 20 is a tie rod 22 having the lower end thereof held in aboss 23, carried by" the outlet elbow pipe 16 and i the upper end thereof threaded and provided with a winged thumb nut 24, whereby the cylinder 20 can be tied or locked upon the support 13. The upper end of the cylinder 20 is provided with a detachable lid or cover 25, and surrounding said cylinder is a screen 25 adapted to prevent solid matter from entering said cylinder.
Secured to the concave bottom 11 by riv ets or other fastening means 26, is an annular angle 27 and riveted or otherwise connected, as at 28 to the vertical angle is an outer cylindrical shell 29 of a less diameter than the vessel 10, thereby providing an annular cooling compartment The upper end of the outer shell 29 is provided with a series of circumferentially arranged. openings or perforations 31 and in the lower end of said shell is arran ed a base plate 32 adapted to rest upon t e upper edges of the angle 27 and the annular shoulder 18 of the support 13, said base plate having a central opening providing clearance for the upper end of the support 13.
Mounted upon the baseplate 32 within the outer shell 29 is an inner tapering foraminous or perforated shell 33, The lower end of the inner shell 'is prevented from shifting upon the base plate 32 by a plurality of equally spaced and circumferent ally arranged lugs 34, and the upper end of the shell is provided with a peripheral flange 35 engaging the inner walls of the outer shell 29.
Arranged in the inner shell 33 are a plurality of superimposed foraminous or perforated channel rings 36 of difierent diameters with the ring of the smallest diameter in the lower end of the shell 33 and the other rings arranged one above the other as't-he diameters increase. These rings are arranged with the edges thereof against the inner face of the shell 33, and packed in said shell between the cylinder 20 and the rings 36 is a filter mass 37, as papier-mach, fiber,

The upper edges of the vessel 10 are provided with an annular seat 48 having a depending annular flange 44, carried by the cover 42 and the edges of said cover are adapted to be connected to the upper edges of the vessel 10 by a plurality of equally spaced set screws 45. Closing the upper end of the annular cooling compartment is a fiat ring 48 having the outer edges thereof resting upon inwardly projecting lugs 49, carried by the vessel 10, and the inner edges of said ring rest upon the upper edges of the outer shell 29 and are provided with depending lugs 50 to assist in holding the outer shell concentric ielatively to the vessel 10. The
. outer ends of the hollow or tubular trunnions 6 and 7 are provided with caps 51 and packing 52. Extending through the trunnion 6 and an opening 53 in the vessel 10 is a pipe 54 connecting with the upper convolution of a coiled tube 55 arranged in the cooling compartment 30 and encircling the outer shell 29. The lower convolution of the coiled tube 55 extends through a boss '56, carried by the concave bottom 11 of the vessel 10 and is coupled to a return bend fitting 57, connected by a vertical pipe 58 to an elbow 59. The elbow 59 is connected to a curved pipe 60 extending into a hollow boss 61, carried by the trunnion 7 and in communication therewith. Extending into the trunnion 7 is an outlet pipe 62 adapted to be held by a gland 63 and suitable packing. Coupled to the pipe 54, as at 64 is an ammonia supply pipe 65, and it is through the medium of the coiled tube 55 that ammonia is circulated in the compartment 30 to cool the beer admitted to the compartment. Beer is admitted to the cooling compartment 30 by a pipe 66 tapped into the lower end of the vessel 10.
The A frames 1 and 2 are provided with uprights 67 and 68 respectively, with upright 68 having inwardly projecting lugspinions 85 upon upon one end of said shaft is a small gear wheel 7 3 meshing with a large gear wheel 74 mounted upon a shaft 75, journaled in the upright 68, said shaft having the outer end thereof provided with a large hand wheel 76. Engaging the large gear wheel 74 is an escapement 77, carried by the upright 68 and adapted to prevent a too rapid rotation of the shafts 75 and 72. Revolubly mounted upon the shaft 72, intermediate the ends thereof, is a drum or spool 78 retained intermediate the ends of'thc shaft by collars 79 mounted upon said shaft. Attached to the drum and adapted to wind thereon is a cable or chain 80 passing over a sheave 81 revolubly supported by a bracket 82, carried by the upper edge of the vessel 10. The lower end of the cable 80 is attached to an eye 83 carried by the vessel 10 adjacent to the lower end thereof. Revolubly mounted upon the shaft 72 are the hubs 84 of pinions 85. These pinions are prevented from shifting upon the shaft by collars 86 mounted upon the shaft at the ends of the hubs 84.
Loosely mounted upon the hubs 84 of the pinions are straps 87, and revolubly supported between the lower ends of said straps are rollers 88. Movably mounted upon said rollers and meshing with the pinions 85 are racks 89.. supporting a perforated presser ring or head 90 of a diameter corresponding to the lower end of the inner shell 33, the head or ring having a central opening 91 of a greater diameter than the cylinder 20, whereby the ring or head can be lowered in the inner shell 33 with the cylinder therein. The outer ends of the racks 89 are connected by a transverse bar 92, and adapted to engage the inner ends of the racks are hooks 93, carried by inwardly projecting brackets 94 of the uprights 67 and 68. These hooks are employed for holding the presser in an inactive position.
' To fix the drums .78 of the pinions 85 for rotation with the shaft 72, said shaft is provided with a longitudinal groove 96 and movably mounted in said groove is a spline 97 having the. ends thereof provided with handles 98, the spline 97 has keys 99 and 100. The key 99 is adapted to lock one of the the shaft 72 and the key 100 is adapted to lock either the other pinion 85 or the drum 78, said'drum and one of the collars 79 thereof having a keyway 101 to receive the key 100 when it is shifted out of engagement with the pinions 85.
The trunnion 7 is provided with a sector rack 102 arranged between the A frame 2 and the vessel 10. Meshing with this rack is a worm 103 mounted upon a shaft 104, journaled in bearings 105, carried by the inner side of the frame 2. The forward end of the shaft is provided with a hand wheel 106.

When the vessel is light, only the elements 102 to 106 are utilized to tilt the vessel, the hand Wheel 76 and its connections being thrown out.'

As the vessel'is tilted the ring 48, and the lid 38 can be removed whereby the filtering material 37 will be discharged. As the filtering material is removed the rings 36 can be taken out of the inner shell, the inner shell removed, the lid 25 removed from the top of the cylinder 20, the .nut 24 removed, and the cylinder 20 removed from the sup port 13. The removed parts can-be thoroughly cleansed and the interior of the vessel 10 and the outer shell 29 thoroughly flushed by substituting water for beer or by re- It will, of course, be understood that the ammonia and beer will be shut off when the machine is to be cleansed.
-Assuming that all the parts are to be restored to their normal'position and the fil-- tering material renewed, the inner shell 33 is placed in position, the cylinder 20 and the lowermost ring 36. A quantity of filtering material is now placed in the bottom of the shell andthis material is packed or subjected to pressure in the following manner: The spindle 97 is shifted to release the drum 78 and lock the pinions 85 for rotation with the shaft 72. The racks 89 arethen shifted to move the hooks 93 out of engagement with the bar 94 and said racks are swung to a vertical position whereby the presser head 90 will be over the inner shell 33 and the cylinder 20. The hand wheel. 7 6 is then rotated to lower the presser head 90 upon the cylinder 20, this being accomplished by the pinions 85 meshing'with the racks 89 agent between said which I retain in engagement with said pinions by the rollers 88. The presser head 90 is lowered sutficiently to subject the filtering material to pressure, and after the lowermost ring 36 has been packed in the inner shell 33, another ring is placed in position and additional filtering material, the
operation of packing the filtering materialand the rings continuing until the top of the shell 33 is reached. The presser head 90 is then, placed in an inactive position, the lid 38, the ring 48 and the cover 42 restored to their normal position, the cover 42 being looked upon the vessel and the screw 40 adjusted to lock the lid 38 upon the inner shell. The cooling or refrigeratory agent is then placed in circulation, beer admitted to the vessel 10, and the cooling and filtering of the beer is carried on until it is necessary to cleanse the machine.
The machine in its entirety is made of metal not susceptible to a corrosive action by contacting with liquids.
What I claim is 1. A machine of the type described, comprising movable frames, a vessel tiltably arranged between said frames,-a cover carried by one of said frames and adapted to close said vessel, an outer shell arranged in said vessel and having the upper edges thereof perforated, and an inner tapering foraminous shell arranged in said outer shell and adapted to contain a filtering material, a plurality of superimposed foraminous channel rings arranged in said inner shell, a foraminous cylinder arranged centrally of said inner shell and having a bottom thereof open, means adapted to detachably retain said cylinder in said shell and means for circulating a refrigeratory vessel and said outer shell.

A machine of the type described, comprising movable frames, a vessel tiltably arranged between said frames, a cover carried by oneof said. frames and adapted to close said vessel, an outer shell arranged in said vessel. and having the upper edges thereof perforated, and an inner tapering foraminous shell arranged in said outer shell and adapted to contain a filtering material, a plurality of superimposed foraminous channel rings arranged in said inner shell, a foraminous cylinder arranged centrally of said inner shell and having the bottom thereof open, means adapted to detachably retain said cylinder in said shell, means for circulating a refrigeratory agent between said vessel and said outer shell, and means supported by said frames and including a presser head adapted to facilitate the pitching of filtering material in said inner s ell.

A beer cooling and filtering machine comprising a tiltable vessel, an outer shell arranged in said vessel and forming in connection therewith a cooling compartment, an inner foraminous shell positioned in said outer shell, said shell having a liquid receiving compartment in communication at its top with said cooling compartment, a foraminous cylinder arranged centrally of said inner shell and having its lower end open for the discharge of the liquid, means for supplying liquid to the cooling compartment, said cylinder and shell providing a filtering chamber, a filter medium mounted in said chamber and extending over the upper portion of the shell, and means for circulating a refrigerant through said cooling compartment.

A beer cooling and filtering machine comprising a tiltable vessel, an outer shell arranged in said vessel and forming in connection therewith a cooling compartment, an inner foraminous shell positioned in said outer'shell, said shell having a liquid re ceiving compartment in communication at its top with said cooling compartment, a foraminous shell, means for supplying liquid to the cooling compartment, said cylinder and shell providing a filtering chamber, a filter medium mounted in said chamber and extending over the upper portion of the shell, means for circulating a refrigerant through said cooling compartment, means for tilting said vessel, and
means whereby the filtering medium can be packed within said filtering chamber.

A beer cooling and filtering machine comprising a tiltable vessel,'an outer shell arranged therein and forming in connection therewith a cooling compartment, an inverted conical shaped foraminous shell positioned within said outer shell, said shells forming a liquid receiving compartment gradually increasing in width unwardly and communicating at its top through said outer shell with. said cooling compartment, a foraminous cylinder positioned within and having in connection with said inner shell a filtering chamber, means for discharging liquid from said shell, a filtering .medium arranged within said chamber and extending over said shell, means for supplying liquid to said cooling compartment, and means for circulating the refrigerant through said cooling compartment.

A beer cooling and filtering machine comprising a tiltable vessel, an outer shell arranged therein and forming in connection therewith a coolin compartment, an inverted conical shape foram-inous shell positioned within said outer shell, said shells forming a liquiding receiving compartment gradually increasing in Width upwardly and communicating at its top through said outer shell with said cooling compartment, a foraminous cylinder positioned within and having in connection with said innershell a-filtering chamber, means for discharging liquid from said shell, a filtering medium arranged within said chamber and extending over said shell, means for supplying liquid to said cooling compartment, and means for circulating the refrigerant through said cooling department, and a lurality of superposed channel shaped rings positioned against said inner shell and communicating with said liquid receiving compartment.
