Description
J. W. BOYD. FISHING ROD SUPPORT. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 26, 191.1.
1,013,734. Patented Jan. 2, 1912.
INVENTOR J1: hn W. E: :15 Ii.
[[grngy To all whom itma y concern:
"Joni: wrLLIAM Born, or MISHAWAKA, INDIANA, AssIGNoa 0F oNE-Hamro HENRY o. KREMER; or MISHAWAKA. INDIANA,
Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM Born,
1 a citizen of the United States, residing at Mishawaka, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fishing-Rod Supports, of which the following 1s a specification. I I
My invention relates to improvements in fishing-rod supports in which a suitable rod holder is provided, adjustably secured to a standard having a clamp adapted to besecured at the margin of the seat or gunwale of a boat or other suitable location.
The objects of my invention are to provide a support of the character described in which the simplicity of construction is consistent with the durability of the device.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a rod holder which is adapted to hold the rod in difilerent desiredpositions, or to so pivot the rod holder, and provlde stops that the rod will, upon movement of theboat, so position itself that the bait end of the fishline will be positioned remote from the boat. v
I attain these objects bythe construction and arrangements of parts. shown in the accompanying drawing, in which,-
Figure l-is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. '2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2- 2 of Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the d1- rection of the arrow. Fig. 4: is a fragmentary perspective View similar to Fig. 3. Fig. '5 is a diagrammatic view showing the automatic positioning of the rod acoordmg to the direction of movement of the boat.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the severalviews. In the drawings, 3 represents a"-clamp,
provided with the usual yoke 4 and clampv screw 5, adapted to be secured at the. margin of a seat or gunwale of a boat. The yoke 4; has formed on its outer margin an adjusting disk 6 provided with a plurality of apertures 7. formed in the face thereof.
A standard 8 is provided,. pivoted, to'the clamp 3 at 9 and has formed at its one end an adjusting disk 10, provided with a plurality of apertures 11, which co-act with the adjusting disk 6, by the aid of a cotter- Speciiication of Letters Patent.

adjusted position with respect to the clamp. The upper end of the standard 8 is provided with a sector plate 13, provided with a plurality of apertures 14, concentric to which is pivotally mounted a rod holder 15 including a forked end 16 and hooked end 17. The rod holder carries a cotter pin 18., or
other suitablestop, adapted to be inserted into any one of the apertures 14in the sector plate 13, to retain the rod holder in the desired adjusted position with respect to the standard as shown in Fig. 3; or to be positioned so that it will engage the radial margins of the sector plate as shown in Fig. 4,
allowing free movement of the rod holder through an angle included between the said radial margins, the purpose of which will be described in connection with the operation of the device, which is as follows When it is desired to set up the device for "use, the clamp .3 is secured to any suitable portionof the boat, such as the vertical gunwale asshown in Fig. 5, and the angle to 'which the fishing rod is to lie with respect to the horizontalis adjusted by means of the disks 6 and 10, theirregistering a ertures' and the cotter pin 12. When it is desired to retain the rod holder in a fixed position with respect to the boat the cotter pin 18 is inserted in one of the apertures 14'of the sector plate 13. The handle of the fishing rod is carried by the forked and hooked portions of the holder 15. When fishing, it is desirable that the bait beas far as possible from the boat'and in order to obtain an automatic positioning of the rod with the bait on the fish line at a distance from the boat and upon movement thereof, .the. cotter pin 1 is inserted to engage either of the radial margins of the sector plate as shown in Fig.
A, the action upon the rod beingindieated diagrammatically in Fig. 5. In this figure 19 represents a portion of a boat moving in an angle of his automatic pin'12,,to retain standard .8 in the de'sireUositioning of the rod is very desirable I when fishing in the manner termed skipping.
v I claim:
1. A fishing-rod supportcomprising in combination, a clamp provided with a disk havm a plurality of apertures, a standard .provi ed with a disk having a plurality of a rtures, said clamp and stardard being plvoted to each other concentrically with the said disks, a pin adapted to be inserted throuh" two registering apertures in the said isks to retain the st-andardin an adjusted position; a sector plate carried by I said standard and having a plurality of margins of saidsector permitting free oscillatory movement of said rod holder through an angle of predetermined magnitude.
2. In a fishing rod support, the combination with a clamp adapted to .be secured to the seat or gunwale of a boat, of a standard adjustably carried by said clamp and provided with a sector having a plurality of apertures therein, a rod holder pivot-allycarried by said'support, and a stop, carried by said rod holder, adapted to be inserted into any of the said apertures, or to be inserted to engage either of the radial margins. of said sector permitting free oscillatory movement of said rod holder through an an-; gle of predetermined magnitude.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 'in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN 'WILLIAM BOYD. Witnesses: t I
