ELECTRIC-LAMP SOCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1912.
Application filed October 17, 1910. Serial No. 587,418.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MAX PEAUcnLLmR, engineer, a citizen of France, and resident of 8 Rue de Commaille, Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Lamp Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to electric signs.
In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation, and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.
Throughout the several figures of the drawings like reference characters designate the same parts.
In' the drawings: Figure l is a lateral, vertical, cross section showing one socket in elevation; Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modification; and Fig. 3 is a cross section showing one of the binding and connecting posts.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 indicates the body of a letter design, or other advertising device. This body is made of plastic insulating material molded into the desired form or shape. Throughout its length are embedded strong coil wires 9 and 10. These wires act to strengthen the plastic mass and hold it solidly together to prevent packing or breaking. At intervals in the length of the molded mass are formed cavities in which are solidly embedded lamp sockets 6 provided with the usual screw threads to receive the externally threaded ends of the lamps. In the bottom of each cavity is seated a contact plug 7. This plug is connected by a branch wire to the wire 9, and the wire 10 is connected by a branch to the socket 6, thus completing the circuit through the lamp when the lamp is screwed in.
When a large number of the signs are being shipped, it may be desirable to close the socket ends to prevent injury to the inside thereof. For this purpose, screw threaded plugs A have been provided, having projecting threaded ends 3 cooperating mitered thumb nuts 5, and shoulders 2.
Threaded binding posts 11 are solidly seated in the plastic body 1 with their heads in contact with the wires 9 and 10 and each post is provided with a clamping nut 12. The threaded ends of these posts may be passed through any suitable frame work and the nuts 12 turned down on the posts to clamp the sign in place on its support. The
feed wires of the electric current are connected to these binding posts in the usual way, of course.
A slightly modified form is shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 2 several separate layers of plastic insulating material are used. In the thickest layer A, the socket 6 is embedded; in the intermediate layer B is embedded the contact post 7; and the remaining layer 0 acts as a backing.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a sign body of plastic insulating material provided with a plurality of socket cavities arranged at intervals in its length, lamp sockets mounted in said cavities, contacts seated in the bottoms of said cavities, strengthening wires embedded in said sign body, and branch wires leading from said strengthening wires to said sockets and said contacts respectively.
2. In combination, a sign body of plastic insulating material provided with a plurality of socket cavities arranged at intervals in its length, lamp sockets mounted in said cavities, contacts seated in the bottoms of said cavities, conducting wires leading through said body and connected, respectively, to said sockets and said contacts, and binding posts embedded in said sign body and in contact with said wires.
