Be it known that I, VILLIABL V. BA ER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond Hill, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- R-azors, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in safety razors, the advantages of which will appear from an understanding of the following description in connection with the annexed drawings, showing one of the forms my improvements may take.
In the drawings, Figure 1' is an elevation of a safety razor within my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the razor of Fig. 1 showing the top plate of the blade holder in open position Fig. 3 is a partial view of the razor on an enlarged scale, same being a vertical section partly in elevation taken on the line 33 in Fig. 4 looking in the direction of the arrow and indicating in dotted lines how the blade holder may be swung into longitudinal position relative to the handle to permit the razor to be used with a stroke similar to an ordinary razor; Fig. partly in elevation on the line 44 in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a view of the blade detached from the holder.
I will now describe the devices of the drawings reserving it to the claims to point out the novel features and to indicate the scope of the invention, it being understood that the claims will be given due range of equivalents. v
Briefly speaking, the razor consists of a blade,a blade holder, a handle, and connecting devices between the blade holder and handle.
The blade consists of two parts, a-thin sheet-steel sharpened member 1 and a stiifening member 2, these being integrally united. The sheet-steel portion is shown sharpened along two edges 1 although of course it might be sharpened at only one edge. The stiffening portion 2 is applied to the sheet-steel portion by wrapping a suitably thick metal strip lengthwise around the blade between its cutting edges, the ends 2 of the strip being dove-tailed together. The
thickness and the width of the stifiening strip are such that any flexibility of the sheetsteel member is el1minated, so much so that the blade can bezused for shaving 1' is a vertical section without additional support like an ordinary razor.
The blade holder consists of a bottom plate 3 and a top plate 4 hinged together at 5 and adapted to releasably interlock with each other at 6. The bottom plate 3 has a recess in its upper face (compare Figs. 3 and 4) adapted to receive snugly between its sides 3- the portion of the stifl'ening strip 2 that is below the sheet-steel part 1 of the blade when laid on the bottom plate of the holder as shown in Figs. 2 to 4 inclusive. Guard teeth 7 are provided on the bottom plate of the holder under the cutting edges of the blade. The top plate of the holder when hlnged down into closed position as shown 1n Figs. 3 and 4 cont-acts with the top of the blade and due to the resilient lock 6 holds the blade rigidly in the recess in the bottom plate of the holder. The blade holder is attached to the handle 8 by a piv: otal connect-ion permitting the former to be pivoted and locked in any angular position relatlve to the handle or in parallelism therewith. For this purpose the upper end of the handle is screw-threaded to engage internal threads of a sleeve 9, the upper or mouth portion of which projects beyond the top of the handle and also inwardly so as to form a socket adapted to receive and confine a ball 10 connected by a neck 10 with a projection 10 from the bottom plate of the holder. The mouth of the sleeve is provided with two or four equally spaced vertical notches 9 to receive the neck 10 of the projection when the blade holder is swung into angular positions or into parallelism with the handle. (See Fig. 3.) Whatever the position of adjustment of the blade holder; it
may be locked in that position by screwing up the sleeve on the handle so that the ball is confined or locked between the upper portion of the sleeve and the end of the handle.
Some of the advantages of the construe-- tion are: The stifi'ening strip is integrally secured to the sheet metaF part of the blade without drilling holes through the blade or even notching it. This saves not only these. operations but also saves preliminarily drawing the temper of the steel and thereafter retempering. Similarly, the blade is held fixedly in the blade holder without resorting to any complication of openings or notches in the blade to co-act with a corresponding complication of projections on the holder. Further, the holder can be instantly adjusted and locked in any desired 'shaving position relative to the handle. In this way it perfectly adapts itself to the needs of right and left handed users. Furthermore, the holder when-adjusted into longitudinal relation to the handle, makes possible the same-shaving stroke given by an ordinary razor and which is so much preferred by most users over the hoe-like stroke of razors in which the blade holder is secured at right angles to the handle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A safety razor blade consisting of a thin sharp-edged sheet-steel member, and a stiifening strip wrapped lengthwise around sharp-edged member and a said member, said strip having interlocking means at its ends for securing said ends together, and being thereby rigidly secured to said member. a 1
2. A safety razor blade, comprising a thin stiffening strip wrapped lengthwise around said member, one end of the strip having a substantially dovetailed socket and the other end having substantially a dovetail that engages in the socket to secure the ends together.
