Description

tuited States' M. S. ORTON,OF GALESBURG,
ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ZIMRI POND, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 101,304, dated .Zi/[arch 29, 1870.
lIII!PRO'VIDMEBVI.' IN PUMPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern..-
Be it known that I, M. S. ORTON, of Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a portion of this specitication, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view.
The nature of this invention relates to improvements in that class of pumps having a hollow pistonrod; and
The invention consists in constructing the piston with an air-chamber in its lower surface,`and extending the hollow pistou-rod down through the said airchamber to near a level with the base of the piston.
'.lo enable others to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
Letter A represents the framing or curb of the well or cistern, to which the device is applied.
Letter B represents a cylinder, open at the top, and with a hole, S, in the bottom.
This cylinder is supported at' a short distance from the bottom of the well or cistern on the braces D D.
Y represents a valve over the hole S, and opening upward.
G represents the cylindrical piston, hemisphen'cal over the top, hollowl on the under side, and tting neatly in the cylinder B.
L represents a hollow piston-rod, curved over at the top, as shown, and forming the discharge-pipe.
b1 represents a lever, pivoted to the curb A by the hook J, and to the pipe L by the pin, shown by dotted lines e.
The manner of operation is deemed evident from the drawings.
When the piston C is liftedby means of the lever H, the valve Y will be raised, and the water drawn into the cylinder B, and when the piston is forced downward, the valve Y will be closed, and the water in the cylinderv B forced upward and discharged from the pipe L, the air at the same time surrounding the lower end of the pipe L, in the under side of the piston, and aiding, by its elasticity, in securing easy action and regular working of the pump.
I do not claim as my invention the tubular pistonrod, nor any method by which other pumps having tubular pistons are operated by valves on their lower' end. My invention obviates the necessity for valves on the piston.
What I claim as my invention is- 'lhe air-chamber or piston C, attached to thelower end of, and in combination with, the hollow piston-rod or tube L, cylinder B, lever H, and valve Y, the whole constructed and operated substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Signed at Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, this 27th day of March, 1869.
M. S. ORTON.
Witnesses P. R. RICHARDS, B. R. MoRsn.
