ARTHUR J. BAZELEY, OF CLEVELANDQOHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL MALLE- ABLE CASTINGS- COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
LIFTING DEVICE FOR COUPLING-LOCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1911..
Application filed April 7, 1908. Serial No. 425,738.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. BAZELEY, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Lifting Device for Coupler-Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view, showing a coupler lock device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a front view of the coupler showing the eye member in a raised position; Figs. 3 and 4c are detail views of the eye member shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a device which will enable the ready attachment of uncoupling levers to looks of car couplers where the uncoupling device is of such construction that the eye of a connection to the lever is too large to be inserted upwardly through the hole from the interior of the car coupler, and where it is necessary to hold the connecting device in an upright position, in order to enable it to drop readily when the coupler knuckle is closed.
In the drawings, the numeral 2 designates a coupler head; 3 the knuckle tail, and 4 the coupler opening and locking piece.
4 is a lifting link, which engages at its lower end an eye 4* on the locking piece. Connected to the upper end of the link bv a pin and cotter 5, is an eye member 3 having an extension 3 which extends helically around the link 4, and which connects the eye member to the link in such a manner as to hold the latter in a rigid posit-ion and prevent it from bending over when the lock is raised to cause said member to pass out of the hole in the top of the coupler head. The eye 7 of the member 3 is engaged by a lifting lever 9. The eye-member can be readily attached to the link after the latter has been assembled on the locking and opening piece, since said member can be inserted downwardly through the hole in the top of the coupler and united to the link by means of the pin and cotter.
I claim:
1. In a car couplerfthe combination with a lifting link, of an eye-member having a pin connection with the link, and having an extension arranged to helically embrace the shank of the link and thereby maintain the eye-member and link in longitudinal alinement; substantially as described.
2. In a car coupler, an eye member having a bifurcated portion formed with a pin hole therethrough, said bifurcated portion having a helical extension below the pin hole; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
HENRY F. POPE, HARRY E. ORR.
