Description

UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIoE.
WILLIAM wURnA cK, oF'sT. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR To FRANK ADAM ELECTRIC COMPANY, or sT. nonrs vrrssouni, A CORPORATION or MISSOURI.
ADJUSTABLE PANEL-BOARD SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1911.
Application filed December 13, 1910. Serial No. 597,139.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WURDACK,
-a citizen of the United States, residing at llo. 929,812, to F. B. Adam da'ted August One object of my invention is to provide a-panel board support of the type described in said Adam patent above referred to which is so constructed that the inwardly and outwardly adjustable device which car ries the panel board will also serve as a supporting means for the outside trim or finishing frame that surrounds the opening in which the panel board is set.
Another object is to provide a panel board support ofthe type referred to in which the adjustable device that supports the panel board is provided witha part that snugly embraces the corner of-the panel board lining and to whichsaid lining can be securely connected. I
Another object is to provide a panel board supporting means which is so 'con structed'that the panel board can be adjusted inwardly'and outwardly relatively to the wall or partition in which it is set, and also adjusted vertically and horizontally so as to line it up or arrange it in a perfectly straight position. And still another object of my invention is to provide a panel board supporting device that comprises few parts and which can be adjusted easily.
()ther objects and desirable features of my invention will be hereinafter pointed out.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a horizontal sectional view of a panel board cabinet provided with panel board supports constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view ,of one of my improved supports; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on approximately the line 3-3 of 2; Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on approximately the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings which'illustrate the preferred form of my ,invention,
A designates a panel board cabinet of any preferred type arranged in an opening in a wall or partition 1, and 2 designates a panel board arranged in a vertical position inside of said cabinet and provided with a lining 3 which projects outwardly so that its outer edge will bear against the inside face of the trim or finishing frame 4 which surrounds the opening in the wall in which the cabinet A is set;
Supports 5 are arranged inside of the cabinet A at the fourcorners of the board, and each of said supports is provided with a device 6 to which the panel board and the. lining are connected, said devices being so constructed that they can -be adjusted -inwardly and outwardly relatively to the cabinet A and thus bring the outer edge ofthe lining 3 flush with the outer face of the wall 1 in case the cabinet A is not set plumb with said wall. The supports 5 are also adjustablyconnected to the cabinet so that the panel board can be adjusted horizontally and vertically so as to line up the panel board or arrange it in a perfectly straight position in case the cabinet A is set crooked. The means herein shown for retaining the supports 5 in position consists of caps 7 which bear upon flanges 5* at the inner ends of the supports and clamp said flanges against the rear wall of the cabinet A, said caps being secured to the cabinet by means of screws 8 which pass through slots 5 in the flanges 5 of the supports. i
The adjustable device 6 on each support 5 is provided with a portion to which the panel board is connected by means of screws 9 or other suitable fastening devices, and also an angle-shaped portion 10 which em braces the corner of the panel board lining and extends approximately the entire depth ofsaid lining. The support 5 is substantially angle-shape in cross section so that the portion 10 of the adjustable device 6 will fit snugly inside of same, and said support 5 is provided with an elongated slot 5 for receiving a bolt 11 or other suitable fastening device which is tapped into the angle-shaped part. 10 of the panel board supporting device 6, a washer 12 being in- .terposed between the head of said bolt and the support 5 so as to cause the device 6 to be clamped tightly to the support when said bolt is tightened. The support 5 is provided with flanges 5 that extend longitudinally of the slot 5, and the panel board supporting device 6 is provided with a guide lug 13 that lies between said side flanges and thus prevents the panel board supporting device 6 from twisting or turning relatively to the support.
In the preferred form of my invention as herein shown, the clamping bolt-or screw 11 is tappedinto the lug 13 of the adjustable panel board supporting device 6 but it will, of course, be obvious that said screw could be tapped into any other desired portion of said device.
Instead of connecting the outside trim or finishing frame 4 directly to the support 5, as in the structure described in said prior Adam patent, I have provided the adjustable panel board supporting device 6 with means to which said outside trim or finish ing frame can be connected, said means preferably consisting of a lug 1 1 that pro jects laterally from the upper end of the angle-shaped part 10 of the device 6. The lug 14 is preferably arranged at the cornei of the angle-shaped portion .10 and is provided with an opening 15 for receiving a fastening device 16 which passes through the outside trim or finishing frame 4, but if desired, the portion 10 could be provided with a continuous flange or a plurality of lugs for securing the outside trim'thereto.
One of the desirable features of a panel board mounting of the construction above described is that it enables the part to which v the lining thereof to be adjusted horizontally and vertically so as to line it up or arrange it in a perfectly'straight position in case the cabinet A is crooked; and still another desirable feature of such a structure is that each support 5 is retained in position by means of a single fastening device 8 which simply has to be loosened, but not removed, when it is desired to adjust the support to line up the panel-board.
The fact that the corners of the panelboard lining are snugly embraced by angleshaped parts 10 to which the lining is securely connected by means of screws 3* or other suitable fastening devices, overcomes I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A panel board support comprising means which is adapted to be connected to a stationary support, an adjustable panel board carrying, device mounted in said means and adapted to be adjusted so as to move the panel board toward and away from said support, and means on said device for carrying the outside trim or finishing frame that surrounds the panel board open- 5a. A panel board supporting device comprising'a member which is adapted to be connected to a supporting structure so as to sustain a vertically disposed panel board in operative position, and an adjustable part on said member to which the panel board and. theoutside trim or finishing frame can be connected, said part being adapted to be adjusted toward and away from the supporting structure to which said member is connected.
A panel board supporting means com prising a member which projects laterally from a supporting structure, a longitudinally adjustable part on said member to which the panel board is connected, and means on said adjustable part to which the outside trim or finishing frame can be connected,
4(- ln a panel board mounting, a part which projects laterally from a supporting structure, a longitudinally adjustable device mounted on said part and provided with portions to which the panel board and the panel board lining can be connected, and a lug on said adjustable device to which the outside trim or finishing frame is connected.
