FLYING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. VIzn, a citi- I zen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State I of Indiana, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Flying Apparatusi and Ido declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This lnventlon relates to improvements 1n flying apparatus.
One object of the invention is to provide .5' an apparatus of this character comprising an improved construction and arrangement of propelling devlce adapted to be secured to the arms and feet of the aviator whereby the device may be effectually operated. 0 With this and other objects in view the pended claims.

In the embodiment of the invention I provide arm propelling devices 1 and foot propelling devices 2. I The arm propelling devices are in the form of planes and comprise substantially elliptical shaped open frames 3 which'may be formed of any light, strong material and which are provided between their inner and outer ends with transversely disposed cross bars 4, said bars being secured to'the frame in any suitable manner. The straps 16 are adapted to be buckled around the inner sides of the legsas shown thus securely fastening the planes 2 to the feet and legs of the aviator. The leg engaging plate is further braced and strengthened by inclined brace bars or rods 16 which are connected thereto at their inner ends and at their outer ends are connected with the outer ends of the frames 11 as shown. The frames 11 are covered with or have arranged therein a filling 17 of fabric or any' suitable material, said. filling being preferably sewed or laced to the frame and is held up from engagement with the ground by the curved brace bars 12. By thus securing the filling to the brace bars 12 the same is also made to concave or bag and thus form pockets which catch the air and make these propelling devices more effective.
In connection with the propelling devices 1 and 2 I provide a suitable sustaining device which is preferably in the form of a balloon 18 and is confined in a net 19 and secured by cords 20 to an attaching belt or band 21 adapted to be buckled around the body of the aviatorat any suitable position. By providing the balloon or similar means for sustaining the weight of the aviator the arm and foot, planes-may be employed solely for propelling purposes and are operated by moving the arms and legs somewhat in the manner in which they are moved in swimming.
