Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. HEME-N- OVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to shoes, and more particularly to over-shoes or rubbers adapted to be worn over ordinary shoes.

In the use of over-shoes difliculty is often experienced in properly retaining the heel of the shoe in place, as there is a tendency for the same to slip off at every step taken by the wearer. This is particularly the case with over-shoes designed to be worn over ladies shoes provided with the prevailing high heels which are cut away at a considerable slope toward the front. This slope prevents the larger portion of the back of the over-shoe from having any gripping action, and all of the work falls upon the small upper portion of the back of the overshoe above the turn of the heel or bunch as it is called.

It is my object to provide a shoe which will overcome this difficulty and retain itself in place under the most severe conditions and no matter what the configuration of the heel of the shoe over which it is worn.

It is also an object of my invention to provide blanks of material of shapes suitable to form a shoe having my improved construction.

The accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, show one specific type of my invention, which I have chosen for purposes of illustration, but it is obvious that this embodiment may be varied in many particulars without departing from the scope of my invention.

In these drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shoe embodying my invention, a portion of the outer coat of the shoe being broken away. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line IIII of Fig. 1, looking in the di rection of the heel. Fig. 3 is a plan view of blank used in manufacturing the shoe embodying the preferred form of my invention, and Fig. 4 is a similar view on a reduced scale of the lining blank used in the said preferred form. Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the lining of the shoe, which is preferably formed of a fabric coated on the outside with rubber or a suitable compound thereof. This lining is cut into a blank of the form shown in Fig. 1 and is folded into the general form of the shoe upper, being joined at the back by the blank 2 of rubber impregnated fabric shown in Fig. 3. The edges 3 of the lining blank may overlap slightly as shown in Fig. 2 and are joined to the tail portion 4 of the blank 2. The blank 1 is indented as shown at 5 to provide the out out portion at the back indicated at 20 in Fig. 2, when the edges of the blank are brought together. A portion of the blank 2 which is provided with an enlarged body portion 7 for the purpose is thus exposed on the inside. After the lining blank is joined along the edges 35 to the blank 2 and made to assume the general form of the shoe upper it is stretched over a last of suitable shape, a. portion being cut out at 23 to receive the neck of the last. The insole 10 is then put in place and the lower edges of the lining turned over the edges of the latter and held there by adhesion. A piping 11 of coated fabric is preferably placed over the joint between the lining and the insole. The heel reinforcement pieces 12 and 13 indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l, are then put in place and finally the outer heel reinforcement or cloth heel ltis put on. The shoe is completed by attaching the outer Waterproof covering 15 of rubber, or rubber compound, and the sole 16; the whole being then vulcanized and varnished. After the shoe has been vulcanized and removed from the last the edges of the lining projecting above the edge of the outer covering of rubber are trimmed ofl. It will be seen that in a shoe as thus constructed a. portion of the blank 2 which is preferably coated on both sides or impregnated with rubber or rubber compound, will be exposed at the point 20 where the lining is cut away. This exposed section forms a semi-adhesive friction surface which firmly grips the heel of the wearers regular shoe at a point just above the bunch 30. The friction surface is not extended entirely down to the sole of the shoe where it would interfere with the easy putting on of the latter, but is confined to the area where it will be effective I cordance With my invention, may be made in other Ways and'by the use of blanks of other than the preferred form described, although I regard the use of the latter as most advantageous.

Having thus described my invention I claim:

1. A shoe comprising a lining formed of a blank of fabric joined at the back from the sole to a point near the bunch, and being cut out to form an opening above the bunch, a piece of fabric coated on its inner surface With adhesive material and comprising a body portion and a downwardly extending tail portion, the said piece of fabric being applied to the outside of the rearportion of the lining, the edges of the body portion being secured to the lining at the sides of the opening therein, the middle of the body portion being exposed through said opening, the tail portion extending over the rear joint in the lining and being secured to the lining, a covering of Waterproof material inclosing said lining and fabric piece, and a sole.

2. A shoe comprising a lining formed of a blank of fabric joined at the back from the sole to a point near the bunch and being cut out to form a U shape opening above the bunch, a piece of fabric coated on its inner surface With adhesive material secured to the outside of the rear portion of the lining and serving to hold the same together, a portion of the inner surface of said piece being exposed through the said U-shaped opening, a covering of Waterproof material secured to the outside of said lining, and a sole.
