Be it known that I, ROBEIT B. CLEMENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crayne, in the county of Crittenden and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Clamp, of which the following is a specification.

This invent-ion relates to clamps, particularly to clamps utilized for stretching wire fences. Clamps of this character are adapted to receive the wires or strands of the hfence and clamp them therebetween to permit of stretching the fence by pulling the clamps with a suitable mechanism.

This invention has for its object to provide for an improved clamp of this character which can be rapidly applied to and removed from the wires of the fence.

The invention is illustrated in t-he accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the clamp. F ig'. 2 is a front elevation of the clamp, broken away. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the clamp.

Referring specifically to the drawings, the clamp comprises sections 5 and 6 preferably of wood or similar material, which have a series of vertical and alining holes 15 and 16 therein. Bolts 8 are passed through t-he holes 16 of section 6 and have outer flanges or heads 9 bearing on the. outer face thereof, said flanges being secured rigidly to the said section by screws 13. Slots or openings 10 pass through the bolts which project from the section 6. By bringing the sections together the bolts 8 are arranged to pass through the holes 151 in the section 5 to bring the slots 10 outside of the said section. The outer face of the section 5 is provided with a plate 7 secured thereon-by means of screws 14. The bolts 8 pass through the holes in said plates which register with holes 15 in section 5. Wedges or cotters 12 are adapted to pass through the openings or slots 10 to clamp the sections 5 and 6 together. The wedges have the intermediate portions of the inner face 12c thereof straight and adapted to fit snugly against the plate 7 and the outer face 12b thereof is tapered to bear against the wall of the opening 10. The forward end of the inner face of the wedge 12 is tapered toward the face 12b to form a sharp point or nose for readily inserting the wedges in the openings 10. At'the rear end the wedge 12 has the forwardly projecting arm 12d on the outer side of same and a finger 12e projects outwardly from the ends of the arm 12d and between the outer face 12b and the said finger 12e is a spur S. The upper and lower faces of the wedge l2 are also tapered or converge toward the forward end or nose of the wedge. Chains 11 are connected to the rear end of the wedges 12 and to the plates 7 which support the wedges when disengaged from the bolts 8 in the proximity of the respective holes where they can be readily grasped and inserted through the holes upon the sections being brought together. In use, sections 5 and 6 are placed over the strands or t-he wires of the fence and the wedges 12 are passed through the openings 10 in the bolts and are hammered or otherwise securely embedded therein. By forcing the fingers 12e against the bolts 8, the spurs S are forced into the openings 10 and bite the `walls thereof to retain the wedges in position. The clamps can then be connected to draft means for stretching the fence. The particular shape of the wedges allow for their rapid insertion through the openings 10 and tightly clamp the sections together. When it is desired to remove the clamps the ngers 12c are struck with a hammer or other implement to remove the wedge from the bolt and allow the sections to be separated. It? is therefore unnecessary to strike the points of the wedge to remove the same.
