Be it known'that I, GEORGE GRANTHA'M Barn, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. Union Square east, in the city, scounty, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in flrinting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

In order to vary the intensity of the light, which may be desirable. when printing from different negatives, means are provided for alteringv the positions of.the lamps in the rear compartment with respect to the printing frame 5. In the present instance such ,means are shown as comprising bars or rods slidingl mounted within openings formed in t 1e bottom of the rear compartment and openings formed in suitable cross; bars 25 carried by the frame 1. Each rod supports a'lamp and is rovided with a lurality of holes 26 within which a pin 2 is adapted to enga e which pin rests upon the upper surface 0 its associated cross-bar 25. When it is desired to change the position of the lamp with respect to the rinting frame it is merely necessary to wit draw the pin 27, and lower or raise the rod,24 into the desired position, after which the pin may be inserted in the hole 26 which is positioned immediately above the cross-bar 25.
' 40- The operation'of the device, which should be large y obvious from the above description, is as follows: \Yhen it is desired to make a print, the frame 5 is drawn forward into-registry vwith the opening in the front 46 compartment 2, as shown in Fig. 4, in which" instance, as above described, the back 6 is automatically opened. At this time the lamp 16' in the rear compartment 3 will be extinguished owing to the fact that the cir- 50 cuit is broken as above described. The ruby light 16 in the front compartment 2 is illummated and by meanswpf the same the film and the sensitized paper can readily be placed in position. The frame 5 is then pushed inwardly into registry with the rear compartment 3 the back 6 closing automatically as described the instant the frame reaches such "position the circuit of the lamps 16 within the rear compartment 3 0 will be completed thus causing them to be illuminated. By means I of the automatic lighting of th lamps in the rear compartment the operator knows exactly the instant from which the exposure should be timed.
-5 It is of course understood that the lights are One of the 'what is claim adjusted vertically into the proper positions before the apparatus is used. The printing frame is l.ft in its position the required length of dine necessary to make an exposure, and is then drawn forward. At the instant the frame starts on its forward trip the circuit of the lamps in the rear compartment is broken, thus stopping the exposure immediately. The frame is drawn out into its forward position as shown in Fig. 4: the back is automatically opened, and v exposure can be accurately determmed, in-
asmuch as the exposure does not begin until the frame is inits innermost position, and ends at the instant the operator withdraws the frame. j
Having described this invention in connection with the illustrative embodiment thereof, to the details of which disclosure, the invention not, of course, to ,be limited, as new and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims: 1. In apparatus of the class described, in combinatlon, a compartment having an opening, a printing frame adapted to register with said opening, an'electric lamp positioned within said compartment, electrlcal contacts associated with said lamp and a contact maker carried by said frame and adapted to electricallyconnect said contacts to illuminate the lamp when the frame is in registry with said 0 ening.

In apparatus of the class described, in combination, two compartments provided with openings, guideways-associated with the openings of said compartments, a source p 'when brought into registry-with the other of light in one of said compartments, said source of'light being of such character that the light emitted thereby will be free from rays adapted to affect sensitized paper, a source of light adapted to affect sensitized paper positioned in the other of said compart-ments', and a printing frame mounted upon said guideways and adapted to be slid thereon intoregistry with either one of v said openings.
5. In apparatus of the class described, in
combination, a plurality of compartments provided with openings, a printing frame adapted to be moved into registry with either one of said openings, said printing frame being provided with a movable back, a source of light in one of said compartments, means for automatically opening the back of the frame when brought into registry with one of said openings and for automatically closing the back of the frame of said openings, and means controlled by the printing -frame for illuminating the source of light when said frame is in registry with the opening of the compartment within whichthe source of light is positioned. i
