To all whom'tt may concern:

Be it known that L-Nnr Aii'oooo, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rockport, in the county of Skagit and State of Vashington, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Safety-Em velops, ofwhich the following is a full, true,. and complete specification. The principal ob'ect of this invention is to provide an envelop for the reception of letters or other documents which, reason of its novel and peculiar construction, prevents the opening of the enveljop by unauthorized persons without detection.

In the drawings Figure 1 isa planview of the sheet of paper blanked out and-ready to be folded, ands'howing the safety flap. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the finished envelop, partially unsealed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged edgewise fragmentary view of Fig. 2.

Referring now'more particularly to the drawings, reference sign 1 is the main sheet,

- the ends 2 and 3 of which-are designed to velqp. ment into be folded'upon the lines as. seen in Fig. 2, the end 2 forming a blind' flap.

4 is the ordinary'gummed sealing flap and preferably integral with the-main sheet 1.

-5 is the safety flap whichis firmly and permanently glued, at 6 to the inner top surface of the sheet 1 and which is'gummed alon its outer free edge as at 7, best shown in Fig. 3. The bottom edges 8 of the main sheet 1 and of the ends '2 and 3- are permonentl joined in the makingof the en- 0 insert the letter or other docu-.- the envelop the safety flap 5 is raised and the letter or other document slip ed between-the main sheet 1 and the fol ed end 3. The gummed ed e? of the safety flap 5 is then moistened an the upper edge of the end 2 pressed firmly down thereupon. -The gummed edge of the ordinary sealing flap 4 is then moistened and made to adhere to the outer surface of the end 2. If an attempt be now made by an unauthorized erson to open the envelop by inserting a knife-blade for instance under that por-' tion of the safety flap 5 indicated at 9 in Fig. 2, the mmed edge of the flap 5 will part from t e end 3 for some distance but means comprising a b .gnally to fold will, by the time the approximate middle of the fla 5 is reached, split and leave atepor-g. tion o its under surface still adhering to', the surface of the end 3 and if the use of the knife be continued in the same direction the flap 5 will finally be torn entirely into, at least through its gummed sufface, thus leaving unmistakable evidence of the attempt to open the envelop. If now, before the flap 5 has begun to tear, the blade could be inserted under the edge of the flap 5 which is op osite the poirit indicated at 9 in Fig. 2, the eft hand side of the tla 5 could be separated from the surface of t e end 3 in the same manner in which the right hand 65 side had been previously-parted therefrom, but such insertion of the b ads is effectually, prevented b the upper lefthandcorneiof the end 2, without tearing or otherwise mutilating the same; i I f, i F. r From the foreg ing it is believed that the construction an 1 operation of my device will be fully understood b those skilled in the art, andwhile I have s own a particular form of embodiment'of my invention .1 ansaware that changestherein will readily suggest themselves to others without departing rom the hit and scope of my invention.
