Description
UNiTED STATES PATENT OEEICEo MERRITT GALLY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ALLEN CARPENTER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTING-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l() ll, dated March 29, 1870.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MERRITT GALLY, of Rochester, in Monroe county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l is a side view showing a vibrating plate, A, supported upon a carriage, C, also draw-bar or connection-rod H in connection with movable bearing-piece G, plate A being iii-position formakingtheimpression. Fig. 2 is a side view showing plate A in position of restfor receiving the sheet to be printed, also draw-bar H and bearing-piece Gin connection with roller-lever I. Fig. Sis a perspective of an ink-distributing cylinder and a composition type-roller for inlring the types, both of which are made in sections. Fig. 4 is a perspective of a distributing roller'or cylinder, I), with eonoidal change-rollers N and O.
The first point of my invention consists in' the 'constructiom and use of a carriage with wheels, slides, or rollers, supporting a vibrating, rocking, or oscillating plate, with the axis of vibration at any point behind the face of said plate, so that by a direct movement of said carriage the plate may be so removed from its counter-plate as to prevent itsstriking said counter-plate during its vibrating, rocking, or oscillating movement, although the counterplate may be fixed or stationary, said plate being used either as platen or type-bed.
The second point of my invention consists in such a construction and connection ofthe drawbars or connection-rods of a press with abearing-piece orbearing-pieces which giveortransmit motion to a platen as to allow a continued movement of said bearing-piece or bearingpieces, while said platen may have a period of rest.
My third point of invention consists in such a construction and connection of theimpression drawbar or draw-bars with the roller-leveror roller-levers as to secure the motion of said roller lever or levers by or through said drawbar or draw-bars.
My fourth point of invention consists in the construction and use of a conoidal change roller over the impression.
or rollers in connection with a distributing roller or cylinder, or a conoidal distributing roller or cylinder in connection with'a straight change roller or rollers, allowing said changeroller and distributingcylinder to be placed diagonally in respect to each other, securing all the'advantages of an extended plane distributing-table with diagonal'rollers, with a saving of nearly two-thirds the space occupied by such a table.
I will now describe more fully the several parts, together with their operations.
The plate A is supported upon a sliding or rolling carriage, O, the axis of vibration of plate A being represented by F. Itwillbe seen that, if the plate referred to were not rst removed from the stationary counter-plate B, plate A could not be vibrated upon its axis F without collision of the two plates. By adirect movement of the carriage C, either before or during the vibrating movement of plate A, such collision is entirely avoided. During the movement of carriage C a vibrating motion is given to plate A by a tooth or spur, Y, coming in contact with a projection on the axial hub of plate A, or meshing into the same. During the direct movement of plate Afor making the impression, said plate is held rigidly fixed to the carriage by a stop, E, on the axial hub, or up on the collar of plate A coming in contact with a stop on the carriage, as shown at El.
The draw-bars H are connected with abearing-piece, G, which is placed behind the collar of plate A, and extends from side to side ofthe press, or is divided, forming a distinct piece for each side. The bearing-piece G presses against the collar of plate A to move it to and A return movement is secured to plate A by connecting the bearingpiece G with plate A by means of a hook or latch, to be disconnected at the time for rest of plate A; or the connection may be made by av spring with sufficient tension to produce motion of plate A until it has comete astop, when the elasticity of the spring will allow further movement of the bearing-piece G, which is made either to slide back or turn on a pivot, as shown at XV. During the p'eriod of rest of plate A motion is transmitted from draw-bar H to roller-lever I through the movable bearin g-pieceG by the connecting toothed segments g and fi, forming a combination of segmental levers. Simple levers in' combination or other equivalent device may be used for this connection, if desired.
to either cylinder or roller, as desired, or both may be conoidal, and lateral motion be allowed to either or both P and N.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
4l. The carriage or slide C, in combination with a vibrating, rocking, or oscillating plate, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The bearing-piece orbearing-pieces Gr, in combination with the draw-bars or connectionrods H, when used in connection with the platen or the type-bed of aprinting-press, substantially, as herein set forth.`
3. The draw-bar or connection-rod H, in combination with roller-lever I i and connectinglever G g, substantially as herein set forth.
4. The construction and use of a conoidal,
roller or a conoidal cylinder, either or both, substantially as herein set forth, and for the purpose specified.
MERRITT GALLY.
