To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMME'I'I W. S'rULL, a citizen of the United States, residin at Milwaukee; in the county of Milwau cc and State of Wisconsin, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Controller's, of which the following is a ful], clear, and exact specification.

' is Well known, there is considerable arcing in a controller when it is shifted backwardly from its first operative osition to oil. position, and in a series para lel controller when the latter is shifted forwardly to change the motors from series relation to parallel relation, or when shifted backwardly to change the motors from parallel relation to series relation. v
The object of the present invention is to avoid arcing at the controller contacts and to provide improvedmeans whereby the circuit of'the motor or other translating device with will be described can he o ned exterior to the controller before the circuit is opened at the controller. I accomplish the above object in a ver effective manner by emplo ing in combination with the controller, w ich may be of any suitable or preferred ty e, a switch having an operating magnet w ich is connected to the controller in a manner such that the circuit of the magnet is opened and the ma at is deenerlgized so as to permit the switc ,to be opene beforethe motor or maincircuit is opened at the controller. Preferably, the switch which is connected in series with the motor is normall biased'toward 0 en osition, and is closed and retained inc ose osition by the magnet which connecte to suitable controller contacts, which cofiperate other contacts so arran ed that the magnet is deenergized, and t e switch is o sued in every instance before the circuit of t e motor or other translating device is opened at the controller. i

The controller C shown in this figure may be of any desired type, but, as here shown, is a series parallel controller for two electric motors M and M. The controller includes stationary contact fingers 13 to 24, inclusive, which cooperate with ments 25 of the controller drum so as to vary the current supplied to the motors. The controller has twelve operative positions and as it is moved between positions 1 to l, the resistance R in the motor circuit the preferred embodiment is varied with the' motors connected in series,
and as it is moved from positions 8 to 12, the resistance R is varied with the motors connected in parallel, the motors being changed from series relation to parallel'relation when the controller is moved from position 7 to osition 8.

In order that-the'magnet'may be ener- "ed and denergi'zedat the proper times, l famvide suitable contacts'in thecontroller and connect these. contacts to the source of current sup ly and to the magnet coil' in a mannerflsucli that when the controller 1s moved from oil position to first 'operatlve moved from position 7 to position 8, a shunt circuit is momentarily established through the magnet coil and around the switch S and controller 0 so as means of a ma toenergize the magnet and permit the switch to be closed, and after the switch is closed and current is sup lied to the motors, the magnet co'il'is in series with the switch and in-shunt-to the controller. This last difl'erent contact seg r The segm the finger 33 by a conductor 35 to the conductor connected to the trolley 28, and to the contact finger 34 I connect one terminal of the magnet 32, the other terminal of the latter being connected to ground G. I also provide on the controller drum short segments 36, 36", and 31 which are adapted to engage finger 33, and comparatively long segments 38 and 39 which are adapted to engage finger 34. The segments 36 and 38 are arranged slightly in the rear of the segments which are adapted. to engage 13 and 29 respectively, so that when the controller is moved from oil to first operative position, and after the fingers 29 and 13 are engaged by the segment 30 and one of the se ents 25 respectively, fingers 33 and 34 wil be engaged by the segments 36 and 38 so as to complete the shunt circuit through the conductor 35, and magnet coil 32 to ground, and when the controller is moved from first operative position to ofi position, the se ents 36 and 38 will leave or be separate from the contact fingers 33 and 34 prior to the separation of the seg ments 25 and 30 from the fingers 13 and 29. ents 369 and 38 terminate before the segment 30 so that in movin the controller forwardly from position. so as to place the motors in parallel relation, the segments 36 and 38 .are moved out of engement with the fingers 33 and 34 before a segments 25 and 30 are separated from i the fingers 14 and 29. When the controller is moved to position 8, the shunt circuit about the switch and controller is again momentarily completed, so that the magnet is energized, and the switch is closed, and when the controller is moved fromposition 8 to position 12, and after the segment 37 is moved from the finger 33, the shunt circuit about the controller is again established and remains establishedso as to hold the switch closed until the controller is moved backwardly, and the segments 37 and 33 are moved beyond the fingers 33 and 34, this taking place not before the motor cir. cuit is broken at t e controller when moved from osition 8 to position 7. Whenthe contro ler reaches position '7, in its backward movement, the magnet is again energized by the engagement of the segments 36' and 38 with the fingers 33 and 34, causing the shunt circuit to be momentarily completed through the magnet coil around the switch and controller. The shunt circuit through the magnet coil around the controller then remains established until position 1 is reached, and just before the controller is moved to oil osition, the magnet circuit is ,broken and t e switch is opened before the motor circuit is broken at the controller. If desired, aiblo'w-out magnet 40 may be em loyed in connection with the switch S, an referablv the conductor 35 contains a switc 41 and a fuse 42.
I do not desire to be confinedto theexact arrangements shown, but aim in my claims to cover all modifications which do not involve a departure from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claimis:
1. In combination, a motor, a motor circuit, a controller a switch in .the motor circuit, and an operating magnet connected in difierent wa s at difierent times to said switch and a 0 connected to the controller in a manner such that its circuit is opened before the motor circuit is opened at the controller.
2, In combination, a translating device, acontroller therefor, a switch in the circlosing the switch and in a certain positionsition, and which is connected to the controller in a mannersuch that its circuit is opened before the circuit of the translating device is opened at the controller.
8. In combination, a motor a motor circuit, a motor controller, and a switch in series therewith and normally biased toward open position, a magnet connected in a certain manner with respect-to said switch for connected in another manner with respect to said switch for holding it in closed position, sald magnet being connected to the controller in a manner such that it is deenergized before the motor circuit is broken at the controller.
4. In combination, a motor, a motor circuit, a motor controller, a switch in series therewith and normally biased toward open position, and a magnet for ,retainin the switch in closed position, said magnet eing connected to the controller in a manner such that its circuit is broken and the switch is o ened before the motor circuit is opened at e controller during either forward or backward movement thereof.
5. In combination, a translating device, a controller, a switch in the circuit of the translating device, and a magnet which when ener ized retains the switch in closed position, t e coil of the magnet being connected at different times in difierent ways with respect to said switch and also connected to the controller in a manner such that it is connected in shunt to the controller when current is supplied to the translating device, and has its circuit 0 ened before the circuit of the translating evice is opened at the controller.
{5. In combination, a motor, a motor circult, a motor controller, a switch in series therewith and normally biased toward open positlon, and a magnet connected at diferent tunes in difi'erent ways with respect to said switch for closing the switch and for holding it in said magnet being connected to controller contacts in a manner such that when current is supplied to the motor, said coil is in a shunt circuit about the controller, and before the motor circuit is broken at the controller said shunt circuit is broken and the magnet is denergized so as to permit the switch to be opened 7. In combination, a translating device, a controller, a switch in the circuit of the translating device, and a magnet which when ener ized retains the switch in closed position, t e coil of said magnet havin suitable connections with the controller, an with the source of current suppl so arranged that before the circuit of t e translatin device is broken 'at the controller, the circuit of the coil is broken at the controller, and when the controller is moved forwardl or backwardly so as to close the circuit 0 the translatin device at the controller and then var the current sup lied to the. translating evice, the coil 0 the magnet is first connected in shunt to the switch and controller so as. to energize the .magnet and close the switch and is then connected in series with the switch and in shunt to the controller until the circuit of the coil is broken at the controller.
8. In combination, a translating device, a resistance, a controller having a drum adapted to out said resistance into and out of circuit, a'switch in the circuit of the translating device, and a magnet which when energized retains the switch in closed position, the coil of the magnet being connected to the controller drum in a manner such that it is connected in shunt to the controller when current is supplied to the translating device, and has its circuito ened before the circuit of the translating evice is o ened at the controller.
