Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES H. SKITT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and GEORGE E. DRUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Singeing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in form cooling means for singeing machines.
During the process of singeing, the forms in passing so many times through the flames become very hot, and while it does not hurt the black or gray goods, it is very objectionable to the green and certain other goods as it causes them to oxidize very rapidly and become too tender, hence, it is the object of this invention to provide cooling means for the forms.
A still further feature of the invention resides in the provision of means for moistening the spark extinguishing roll to more efliciently put out the sparks lingering from the singeing o eration.
Reference Wlll be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the machine, Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4c is a sectional view on line H of Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the valve, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a fragment of the spark extinguishing roll and its moistening means.
Reference numeral 1 designates the central standard or post which is stationary and upon which is journaled the table 2, the latter carrying the forms 3 upon which the stockings or other articles to be singed are mounted or supported. The central post is hollow for its entire or only a portion of its length to form an air passage 4 to which a strong continuous current of air is supplied from a suitable source, such as a fan blower, the air bein supplied at either the upper or lower cut of the center post or at any suitable point within its length. The forms are arranged in duplicate sets, five to each set (though not necessarily) and to the table is imparted an intermittent rotary movement, and to the forms an independent rotary motion through gear 5 and pinion 6, all as in a companion application filed April 27, 1909, Serial No. 492,501.
The table 2, is circular and hollow and is divided by radial partitions 7 into radial air chambers, one adjacent each form, those for one set of forms being indicated b numeral 8 and those for the other set of orms.
being indicated by the numeral 8". The upper wall 9 of the table is cut away adjacent the center post thereby forming inlets 1, 2*, 3*, 4 5 and 1", 2 3", P, 5, to the air chambers 8, 8. These inlet ports are covered by a circular valve 10 keyed on the stationary hollow center post- 1 and the valve is formed with a flange 11 having a ground or packed working face 12 in engagement with a similar working face 12' on the upper wall of the table. A spring 13 encircles the center post 1 and bears at one end against acollar 14 which is fast on the post 1 and at the other end against the valve 10 to insure a tight working joint between the faces 12 and 12. 0
The valve 10 is provided with two diametrically opposite valve chambers 15*, 15, each shown controlling three of the inlet ports, the first controlling the inlet ports of two of the chambers 8 and of one adjacent chamber 8 and the other the inlet ports of two of the chambers 8 and of one adjacent chamber 8. Air is supplied to each of the valve chambers 15 and 15 from the hollow center post through vertical rows of perforations 16, 16 in the center post, there being three rows for each chamber. Intermediate the valve chambers 15 and 15, are plain portions 17, 17", which are practically inwardly extending continuations of the flange 11, being in the same plane therewith, and the function of these portions is to close the two remaining ports of each set of chambers 8, 8", respectively. The partitions 7 extend upwardly through the inlet ports flush with the working face 12 of the table and are tightly engaged against air leakage by the said plain portions 17, 17', when adjacent the same.
The forms which receive the stockings or other articles are hollow and consist of perforated tapering shells 20 closed at their tops by cap-plugs 21 and having their lower ends slipped over the hubs or reduced portions 22 of the friction disks 24, said forms being secured by their cap-plugs 21 and friction disks 24 to the stem 25 and being driven by the engagement of the disks 26 as in the said companion application. The disks 26 are driven by pinions 6 through the sleeves 27 and have a depending flange in each case, indicated by numeral 28, said flange telescoping within an annular flange 29 on the upper wall of the table. To permit the free flow of air from one of the air-chambers to its respective form, each driving disk 26 and friction disk 24 is perforated as at 26' and 24' respectively, and to prevent escape of air when the driving contact between the said disks 24 and 26 is broken, the latter is formed with an upwardly extending flange 26 within which the disk 24 is slidingly inclosed or seated.
As set forth in the companion application the various operations performed are, loading, first brushing, singeing, second brushing and spark extinguishing, and stripping, the stations at which these operations are here performed and the mechanism therefor being indicated respectively by the characters 1", 2 3 4 5 for one set, and for the other set by 1 2 3 4 5 The valve 10 is arranged relatively to these stations so that its chamber 15 will be adjacent the stripping station 5 of the second set and the loading station 1 and first brushing station 2 of the first set, while its ch mber 15 lies adjacent similar station 5 of the first set and stations 1 and 2 of the second set, thereby permitting free flow of air from the center post to the forms as they are brought into juxtaposition to the stripping, loading, and first brushing stations of both sets, the flow of air to the forms adjacent the singeing stations 3*, 3 and second brushing and spark extinguishing stations 4 4 being prevented by the plain valve portions 17, 17".
The air is only delivered to the forms adjacent the stripping, loading, and first brushing stations, as set forth, for the reason that if it were applied at the singeing stations 3*, 3 its emission from the perforated forms thereat would affect the steadiness of the flames; and if applied at the second brushing and spark extinguishing stations 4, 4 any little spark on the goods after the singeing operation would be intensified by the draft of air and would burn a hole in the goods before the spark extinguisher roll 30 could prevent it.
Attention is directed to the fact that the emission of air through the perforated forms and stockings during the first brushing and after second brushing (at stripping station) will greatly assist in the thorough cleaning of the stockings from lint and carbonized fiber.
At each of the spark extinguishing and second brushing stations 4*, 4 the extinguishing roll 30 is provided with a covering of absorbent felt 31 or may be composed entirely of felt or similar material, and upon the upper end of the roll is mounted a cup 32. A small jet of water is supplied to the cup by pipe 33 and the water feeds through perforations 34 or overflows onto the felt covering of the extinguishing roll to more effectually put out any sparks carried over from the singeing operation.
The operation of the form cooling means and the automatic control of air flow, and the spark extinguishing roll moistening mechanisms, will be well understood from the foregoing.
Having fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. In combination, singeing means, forms for supporting the articles to be singed, and means for cooling said forms.
2. In combination, singeing means, forms for supporting the articles to be singed, means for conveying the forms to and from the singeing means, and means for cooling said forms.
3. In combination, singeing means, forms for supporting the articles to be singed, means for conveying the forms to and from the singeing means, and means for acting upon the forms to cool the same when out of operative relation with the singeing means.
4. In combination, singeing means, hollow forms for supporting the articles to be singed, and means for supplying a cooling agent to said hollow forms.
5. In combination, singeing means, hollow perforated forms for supporting the articles to be singed, and means for supplying a cooling agent to the interior of said forms.
6. In combination, singeing means, hollow forms for supporting the articles to be singed, means for supplying a current of air to the interior of said forms, said forms being perforated to permit the air to filter through the article.
7. In combination, brushing means, forms for supporting the articles to be brushed, and means for forcing air through the articles during brushing.
8. In combination, brushing means, forms for supporting the articles to be brushed, and means for forcing air through the articles after brushing.
9. In combination, brushing means, singeing means, forms for supporting the articles to be brushed and singed, and means for forcing air through the forms and articles to assist in the brushing and to prevent overheating due to singeing.
10. In combination, singeing means, rotatable forms for supporting the articles to be singed, means for conveying the forms to and from the singeing means, and means for coolin said forms.
11. In combination, singeing means, rotatable forms for supporting the articles to be singed, and means for cooling said rotatable forms.

In combination, a carrier provided with passages, forms on the carrier for supporting articles, means for supplying air through the said passages to the forms, and means controlling the inlet ends of said passages for automatically cutting on and off the air supply.

In combination, a rotary carrier provided with passages, forms on the carrier for supporting articles, means for supplying air through the passages to the forms, and means at the inlet ends of the passages controlled by the movement of the carrier for automatically cutting on and oif the air supply thereto.
37. In combination, a carrier provided with passages, forms on the carrier for supporting articles, means for supplying air through the passages to the forms, and stationary means at the inlet ends of the passages for covering and uncovering certain ones thereof during movement of the carrier.
38. In combination, a shaft, a carrier movable thereon, forms on the carrier for supporting articles, the carrier being equipped with air conduits to supply air to the forms, a stationary valve on the shaft automatically controlling the supply of air to the inlet ends of the conduits.
39. In a device of the character described, a central hollow shaft, a table rotatable thereon, a valve mounted on the shaft, forms on the table, the table being arovided with air passages to the forms, sai valve having a chamber for placing one of the passages in communication with the hollow shaft.
40. In a device of the character described, a central hollow shaft, a table rotatable thereon, a valve mounted on the shaft, forms on the table, the table being provided with air passages to the forms, said valve having a port or chamber for placing one of the passages in communication and a portion for cutting another of the passages out of communication with the hollow shaft.

In a device of the character described, a central hollow shaft, a table rotatable on the shaft provided with air passages, hollow article supports on the table in communication with the passages, a valve on the shaft covering the inlet ends of the passages and provided with ports for distributing air to certain of said passages and not to others.
42. In a device of the character described, a central hollow shaft, a table rotatable on the shaft provided with air passages, hollow article supports on the table in communication with the passages, a circular valve on the shaft in frictional engagement with the table and controlling the inlet ends of the passages and provided with ports for distributing air to certain of said passages and not to others.
In a device of the character described, a central hollow shaft, a table rotatable on the shaft provided with air passages, hollow article supports on the table in communication with the passages, a circular spring pressed valve on the shaft in frictional engagement with the table and controlling the inlet ends of the passages and provided with ports for distributing air to certain of said passages and not to others.
44. In a singeing machine, article supporting forms comprising perforated shells, means for conveying the forms, and means for supplying air through the same while being conveyed.

In a .singeing machine, a rotatable table, a rotatable member thereon, operating means for the table and member, an article supporting form mounted on said member, said table having an air supply passage communicating with the interior of the form, and means for automatically cutting on and off the supply of air from the forms at intervals.

In a singeing machine, a rotatable table, a rotatable member thereon, operating means for the table and member, an article supporting form mounted on said member, said table having an air supply passage communicating with the interior of the form, and means controlling the inlet end of the passage and adapted to cover and uncover the same to automatically cut on and off the supply of air from the forms.
49. In a singeing machine, a table, an article supporting form rotatable thereon, said table and form having communicating air supply passages, said table and form having interfitting concentric packing flanges surrounding the air passages.
50. In a singeing machine, a table, a rotatable member thereon, an upwardly extending packing flange on said member, article supporting forms seated on said member Within its flange, said form and table having communicating air supply passages.
51. An article supporting form for singeing machines, comprising a perforated shell, :1 cap closing the upper end, a driving member secured to the lower end, a stem projecting below the form shell, said form having an air supply port through its bottom.
52. In a singeing machine, a table, a rotating member thereon, an article support mounted on said member and being capable of vertical movement, said table and form having a communicating air supply passage, said member having a flange embracing the form to prevent air leakage when the form is raised.
53. In a singeing machine, a spark extinguishing roll, and means for moistcning said roll.
54. In a singeing machine, a spark extinguishing roll having an absorbent covering, and means for nioistening the covering.
55. In a singeing machine, a spark extinguishing roll, and a cup on the upper portion thereof for feeding liquid to the roll.
56. In a singeing machine, a. spark extinguishing roll having an absorbent covering, a cup on the roll having liquid outlets overlying the covering for supplying cooling liquid thereto.
57. A singeing machine, an absorbent spark extinguishing roll, a perforated cup thereon and. means for supplying liquid to the cup to moisten the roll.
58. In a singeing machine, a spark extinguishing roll, means concentric therewith for supplying liquid thereto.
59. In a singeing machine, a spark extinguishing roll, a Water supply member having outlets concentric with the roll exterior for moistening the same.
60. In a singeing machine, an absorbent spark extinguishing. roll, and a jet pipe for simplying liquid thereto to moisten the same.
