To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Maurin MicxninN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Callaway, in the county of Becker and ,tate of Minnesota, -have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Grease-Cups; and I do here y declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact'description of the inventi'on, such as Awill enable others slcilled in the art to which it appertains to makeJ and use the same.
My invention has for its object 'to ro\ vide an improved automatic and positive force feed grease lubricator cup, especially adapted for use in supplying ase or hard oil to the bearing of an engine crank pin, and to this end, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of de'- vices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanyin drawings which .illustrate the invention, ikc characters indicate like .parts throu hout the several views.
Referring to the rawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing the improved device applied in working position to the connecting rod of an lengine in position to furnish lubrication to the 'crank pin on the crank disk,'some parte of the engine being broken away; Fig. 2 is a detail view on an enlarged scale' showing a portion of the improved device in front elevation, some parts of the engine bein shown in section, and other parte thereof ein broken away; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the improved device, on an enlarged scale, with some parts broken away; Fi 4 is a view of the improved device in si e elevation on an enlar ed scale,
with some parts bro en away an the expcsed parts shown in section, Fig. 5 is a view principally in vertical section taken on the line ai m5 of Fi 3, the same being on the same scale as ig. 4; and, Fig. -6 is a detail view in section taken on the line vai" ai of Fig. -5.
For the purpose of illustrating the improved device in working position, a portion of an engine has been shown in theV drawings, -of which, the numeral 1 indicates a portion of the cross head guide, 2' the cross ead, 3 the connecting rod, 4 the crank disk, and 5 the crank pin.
Referring to my improvement, the numeral 6 indicates a grease cup which, as shown, is provided at its bottom with a perforated discharge neck 7, and which A neck 7 is detachalily secured to the connect-y ing rod 3 or any othersuitable support, by screw-threaded engagement. The cup 6 is provided with a air of laterally spaced and vertically exten ed bearing lu 8, `and a depending foot portion 9 whi is secured to the connecting rod 3 and holds the cup 6 locked -in its proper position. At its .upper end, the outer vertical face of the cup 6 is redu d to form a cover seat 1.0 on which. is teescoped the depending retaining iange of a removable cover 11. This cover 11 is locked on its seat 10 by means of bayonet joints 12, as show -tliree in number, and the cover 11 is still further locked against rotation by means of a spring lock 13, one end of which is secured to the retaining lian e of the cover 11 and the other, or free end of which is normally seated in a notch 14 in one ofthe bearing lugs 8.. To the intermediate portion of the sprin lock 13 is secured, an outwardly and latera ly projecting finger Lpiece 15 having an inwardly proJecting guide stem 15* which works in a seat 16 formed in the ,retaining flange of the cover 11 for .guiding the sprin lock 13. Rotatively mounted on the top o the cover 11 is a horizontally positioned worm gear 17'liaving adepending hub which is rovidedwith a centrally 1o-. cated, vertically extended and internally screw-threaded passage 18. The hub of the worm gear r17 is rotatively mounted in a seat 19 extended vertically through the central portion of the cover 1 1. The lower end of this hub islupset, as shown in Fig. 5, toA

Fitted within the cup 6 is a ring-packed piston 20 having an upwardly proJecting stem 21 which works through the passage 18 of the worm gear 17 and has screw-threaded engagement therewith. As is evident, the internally screw-threaded hub of the worm gear 17 acts as a nuten the piston stem 21 and the cover 11 forms a base of resistance for .the worm gear 17. To lock the iston stem 21 against rotation, but to ermit longitudinal mvement thereof, i op osite aces are fla` ned or reduced at 22 and a guide bar 23 i.' secured to the underside of the cover 11. This guide bar 23 is rovided with a central passage through w ich the iston stem 21 works, longitudinally, fand its Iwalls closely engage the piston stem 21 to vary the feed. The star whee at its iiattened sides 22 and hold the same against rotation.
Rotatively mounted in the bearing lugs 8 is a horizontally extended shaft 24 provided, at its intermediate portion, with a worm 25 which engages the worm gear 17. Rigidly secured to one end 'of the shaft 24 is a ratchet wheel 26 subject to a'springpressed pawl 27 pivotally secured to a lever 28, which, in turn, is pivotally mounted at its intermediate portion on the shaft 24. The construction of the pawl lever 28 is such as to embrace the ratchet wheel 26, as best shown in Fig. 3.
Screw seated 1n a raised boss 6 on the side of the cu (i, and directly below the power end of tiie pawl lever 28, is a stud 29 on which is rotatively mounted a stanwheel 30 having an eccentric pin 3l. For the pur pose of yieldingly and frictionali holding the star wheel properly positione and also to hold the stud 29 against rotation a Hat spring 32 is provided. This flat spring 32 is secured to one of the bearing lugs 8 and its free end is bifurcated and the prongs thereof, embrace the stud 29 to lock the same against rotation and work against the inner face of the star wheel 30. A link 33 connects the power end of the pawl lever 28 to the eccentric pin 31 on the star wheel 30. This link 33 is adjustably secured to the pawl. lever`28 by means of a'pin 34 which is adapted to be inserted into any one of a series of perforations-35 in the pawl lever 28; and this adjustment permits the throw of the paw] lever 28 to be changed, at will,
30 receives a step by step movement from a laterally projectin striking pin 36 secured to the crank dis 4 and arran ed to engage one of the arms of the star W eel 30 at each rotation of the crank disk 4.
To prevent backward movement of the ratchet Wheel 26, -a sprin retaining pawl 37 is secured and arrange in the customary manner.
` What I claim is:
1. The combination with a. cooperating crank head and a connecting rod, of an adjustable grease cup carried v said connect- ;i'ng rod, and means for adjusting said ,grease cup including a star wheel carried by said grease cup, and a projection carried by said crank head and mtermittently engageable with said star Wheel, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a crank and a connecting rod, of a grease cup carried by the said connecting rod, a non-rotary piston in said cup, a Worm and Worm gear acting to move said piston, a star wheel actuated by a part carried by said crank, and connectionsfrom said star wheel for actuating said worm and worm ear including a pawl and ratchet device, su stantially as described.
3. The combination with a crank and a connecting rod, of a grease cup carried by said connecting rod, a non-rotary piston in said cup, a worm and Worm gear acting to move said piston, a pawl and ratchet device for actuating said Worm and worm gear, and a star wheel crank connected to the pawl lever and actuated by a part carried y the said crank, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a crank and a connecting rod, of agrease cup carried by said connecting rod, Qa non-rotary piston in said cup, a worm and worm gear acting to move said piston, a pawl and ratchet device for actuating said worm and worm gear, a star wheel actuated by a part carried by the said cra-nk, and a link connecting the pawl lever to a point of said star wheel eccentric to its center, substantially as described,
5. The combination with a crank and a connecting rod, of a grease cup carried by said connecting rod, a non-rotary piston in said cup, a worm and worm gear acting to move said piston, a pawl and ratchet device for actuating said worm and worm gear, a star wheel actuated by a part carrled by the said crank,-and a link adjust-ably connectin the pawl lever to a point'of said star W eel eccentric to its center for varying the feed, substantially as described.
