EXTENSIBLE CAR-STEP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLEN M. CoNDos, a citizen of the United States, residing at Golclfield, in the county of Esmeralda and State of Nevada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extensible Car-Steps,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an extensible car step, and has for an object to provide a step of this character which may be used in connection with the permanent car step and which is adapted to be readily extended so as to be disposed immediately beneath the lowermost permanent step so as to be utilized when passengers are boarding or leaving the car and obviating the objectionable use of devices which have heretofore been employed for the purpose of partly filling the vacancy between the lower permanent step of the car and the surface of the ground.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved extensible step showing its application to the permanent step of the car, the extensible step being in an extended position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
The extensible step 1 which forms my invention is disposed beneath the lower permanent step 2 of the car as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Bracket arms 3 extend upwardly from the ends of the extensible step 1 and are slidably fitted against the side members 1 of the permanent step, the said bracket members having longitudinal slots 5 therein through which the horizontal guide rollers 7 extend. These guide rollers are mounted in yokes or brackets 8 which are secured, at 9, to the side members 4:. The inner ends of the rollers are provided with trunnions 10 which are journaled in the wall 11 of the yoke. The outer ends of the rollers are provided with trunnions 12 which are journaled in bracket plates 13. These bracket plates are secured in any suitable well known manner to the wall 141 of the bracket and are designed to cover the opening 15 in the wall 14. The opening 15 in the bracket is considerably larger than the diameter of the roller 7 so as to permit of the passage of the roller through the bracket and through the bracket member 3 of the extensible step. The end walls 16 of the brackets are spaced from the side edges of the bracket plates3 and disposed in the intervening spaces bet-ween the said end walls and the said side edges of the bracket plates 3 are antifriction rollers 17, the ends of the rollers being journaled in the walls 11 and 14 respectively, as shown.
Actuating members 18 are secured, at 19, to the bracket plates 3 of the extensible step. One of these members is provided with a rod or extension 20 on which is formed a grip or handle 21 which is designed to be engaged by the hand of the operator and to be manipulated thereby so that movement can be imparted to the extensible step. The extension or rod 20 carries a latch 22 which is adapted to engage a suitable keeper 23 on the platform of the car so as to hold the extensible step against sliding movement.
I claim:
The combination with a permanent step of a car including spaced side members; of an extensible step disposed beneath the permanent step, side members extending upwardly from the ends of the extensible step and slidable against the side members of the permanent step, the said side members of the extensible step having longitudinal slots therein, brackets secured to the side members of the permanent step and embracing the side members of the extensible step, rollers journaled in the brackets and engaged against the side edges of the side members on the extensible step, the said brackets having other rollers journaled therein and extending through the guide slots in the side members of the extensible step, an actuating member for the extensible step, and means for holding the extensible step against sliding movement.
