UNITED STATES PATENTOFF1CE I UNNEL FOR CHARGING CONTAINERS FOR BURSTING CHARGES" WITHLFUSEDW,
EXPLOSIVES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application led January 14, 1911.
.Vallen TQQ lai izq-1191] i Serial No. 602,552.
To all 'whom ii may concern:
Be it known that we, ERNST Sononowsli, of Hamburg, Stale of Hamburg, and Go'lrnon) .lssipiciu ot (.ologne, Siate of Prussia, Germany, lm veiuvented a new and useful Improvement in Fxlunels for Charging Containt-rsl for Bursting Charges with Fused Explosives, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni a part of this specication.
The object of our invention is to produce a funnel which will insure the charging of the container with thevbursting charge, causing the same to chill in the container without the formation of. hollow spaces, also to produce a sutlicient pressure or head upon the material being cast in the container and enabling the taking up of impurities and air bubbles, which would otherwise -be detrimental to the cast of the explosive in the container. Finally, to form a space in the explosive in the container for the insertion of a priming charge in the fused explosive charge.
We will first describe a funnel embodying 4our invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then point out the invention in the claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is a sectional v iew of 4an apparatus involving our invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on lineA--t Fig. 1.
The funnel, as shown, consists of the main portion a and the neck b. The main portion a and neck Z are jacketed, forming the jacket spaces c and al. The space c has 'a connection e with a source of steam supply, and the space d an outlet f to the air.
gis a hollow piece or former for producing the space in the explosive for the priming charge.
l1, is a' pipe connecting space c with the in- This pipe le terminates at the upper portion of the interiorI of the form g.' i
is a pipe leading from the outletf to the lower portion of interior of former g.
The neck b of the funnel is provided with the ange by means of which it is su ported o n tlie top of the inlet opening of tlli'eA explosive containerv In Vplacingrl tliefunn'el upon the container` afsheet of rub er (n 'roltlierk plastic malenialis placed benefitlithe'flaiige'i ghi and apex @here passing otherwisel thanifito y,
' i l l 4\ A The condensation water aiideliz top of the funnel until`entiarice ntofthe'iio container, and thus provides for a continuous passage of said liquid ex'ilosive. This i causes the filling up of any ollow. spaces tending to form, and thus prevents the vformation of such hollow completely dense and uniform cast ,is ob-` tained. Owing to the heating o f the funnel by means of the steam jacket, any ,choking of the funnel by partly chilled explosive-is prevented. l
The dimensions of the funnelshould preferably be such that the contents actv 1in-a similar manner to the deadhead of`a mold so that the column of liquid ,explosiveL exerts a pressure, during container, upon the portions of the-explo-I sive beneath it, which is being cast. Furthermore, this dead head takesu a'llimpurities and air bubbles which Wouljd otherw;` wise be detrimental to the cast. ing of the funnel may be interrupted at-,will during the chilling of the explosive and the heating is finally eliminated after the chilling has sufieiently progressed. z :ff The funnel may readily be removed may the form g, by temporarily slightly heating the funnel. This somewhat fuses the explosive immediately surrounding the funnel and the funnel can be removed from the cast without diiiiculty. In the space formed by the form g, a shell made of pasteboard,l metal or other materiali containing the primingeharge is inserted and lhe shell is completed.
