citizen of the- United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of jlllinois, have invented a new and useful Imporovement in Sofa-Beds, of which the` fol` ,iframe and bed-bottom for the bedding, i. e.,

As h s 'becn indicated, the Distress-frame is preferably equipped with a flexible mattress, 'or bed-bottom, which is unfoldedor spread in the operative osition in the operation of unfoldingr the ed-frame; and the mattress-pad, or mattress proper, and other bedding, including the hcdlinen and covers, are scoured iii-position and folded between the sections of the foldnble maitres-stremo, so that the bedding will be spread out witn -tlic mattress or flexible bed-bottom when Athe device is converted into bed form.

rear ned-section.` Thus the rear bed-section positively guided in its raising and lowering movements while the links 32 are swinging on their pivots 38 andlthe slides 31 are moving on the end members 37 of the rear bed-section. Also, the angle-bars 18 being disposed at the inner sides` of the rollers 45, z'. e., between the arn's '37 of the rear bed-section, serve to hold said arms against springing together whenthe bed is' occupied. The arms of the front bed-section are similarly held separated by the upright members 19 at the outer sides of which said arms are pivoted.

The operation will be readily understood from the. foregoing detailed description. Preparatory to -converting the structure from bed form to sofa form, the bed is properly made up and the bedding secured to the foldin bed freine, so that when the bed frame is olded upon the carrier, byswinging the front bed-sectionl) rearwardly and upwardly from the positionshown in Fi 1, the bedding will be folded "at" the saine time. In the operation of folding the bed on its carrier, previous to the operation of lowering the seat, the links connected with the front bed-section serve to shift the slides 31 rearwardly, thereby turning the links 32 on theirpivots 38, so that the rear bed-section will "be lowered with relation to the carrier, the rollers 45, durino' this movemen, traveling along the guide-danges 44 of the upriglits 18. During this operation, the links 23 automatically `fold the front-piece 21 with relation to Vthe carrier. `When the cari-ier is automatically retracted, thus carrying the bed to the housed position, during the operation of lowering tlie seat, the front piece 21 of the carrier is carried to the position shown in- Fig. 2- Where it serves as a front piece for the sofa bed, closing the space beneath the front portion of the seat and extending from one endstandard 1 of .the main framefto the other end-standard.
