EXPANSIBLE HOSE-NOZZLE.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that l, WrLLIAM H. CANNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Corona, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in EXpansible Hose- Nozzles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates more particularly to al class of nozzles adapted for use in connection with a hosewpipe or other supply pipe and which provides for distributing simultaneously or alternately one or two streams of water or liquid for extinguishing fires, washing streets, sprinkling or other like purposes. I
The primary object of the invention is to provide a nozzle so constructed as to be light in weight, convenient to handle when in use, and of suiiicient strength and durability to withstand the strain exerted by a stream of water forced therethrough under the greatest pressure, and another object thereof is to provide a form of nozzle having two outlets or distributing openings from one of which a straight solid stream may be thrown and from the other out-let a flared or cone-shaped body of water may be discharged forming an eectual protecting wall of water against the heat affecting the fireman when extinguishing a fire.
My invention further provides controlling means adapted to readily shut off the passage of water through both of the outlets thereby permitting the operator of the nozzle to conveniently move from one place to another and carry the hose with him to play the stream upon various parts of a burning building without making it necessary to cut off the water at the source of supply, or by manipulating the said controlling means the outlet for distributing the flared body of water may be closed and a solid stream allowed to be discharged or vice versa on such occasions when it is desired to sprinkle or spray the firemen endangered by the heat or smoke when in close proximity to a ire.
These advantages are attained by providing an eXpansible form of hose nozzle consisting of a jacket or base-pipe carrying interiorly thereof a rotatable upper body-pipe and within said body-pipe a tube of similar dimension is rigidly held. outer surface of the wall of said tube a pas sage is provided which branches outwardly at its upper terminal and forms the discharge outlet for distributing the coneshaped sprinkling sheet of water, and said outlet may be quickly closed or opened as necessity requires by a. cup-shaped collar or annular cap forming controlling means provided at the upper end of the body-pipe. On the interior of the base-pipe and adjacent to its lower end is mounted a valve having substantially a conical-shaped head adapted to contact with a valve-seat and close the inlet of the centrally disposed tube. The interior of this tube forms the channel for the solid stream of water which is discharged through an outlet in the spout held at the upper end of said central tube, and the entrance of water at the inlet thereof is controlled by the tube with its. valve-seat being lifted off the head of the valve when the body-pipe is rotated for opening the nozzle for the flow of the solid stream. Thus the volume or force of the two streams of water are always under perfect control, and the streams may be discharged simultaneously or alternately at the will of the operator.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawingsforming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my nozzle showing an elevation of the valve closing the inlet to the central tube. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the nozzle connected to a hose-pipe. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the nozzle. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line II-H of Fig. l in the direction indicated by the arrow. The nozzle 12 has an interiorly threaded lower end, as at 13, adapted to be screwed upon the threaded end 11 of the hosepipe 10 by spanning wrenches engaging the lugs 14C and 14 projecting from the rims 15 and 15l provided at the base of said nozzle and at the top of the hose-pipe respectively, or the nozzle may be connected to the hosepipe in any other suitable or preferred manner.
As shown, my nozzle is so constructed that its various parts may be readily assembled, and comprises mainly a jacket or base-pipe 16, an upper casing or body-pipe 17 and a central tube 18. A spout 19 is provided at the upper end of the nozzle, the mouth of which-forms the outlet 20 through which is discharged the straight solid stream of water, and the lower end of said spout is provided with an outer hexagonally faced flange, as at 21, forming a wrench-seat 22. Shoulders 23 are arranged by cutting away the inner face of said flange, and said cutout part is threaded as 24, for the reception of the threaded end 25 of a crown 26, the shoulders 23 of the spout 19 resting upon the upper edge of said crown and forming a tight joint therewith by the use of a wrench engaging the seat 22. The base 2,6a of the crown 26 projects outwardly and forms with its inwardly curved underside, as at 26", an extended flared concentric lip, 26", providing a deflecting wall for forming and distributing the cone-shaped stream of water from the outlet 26d. - and threaded, as at 26", for engagement with the exterior-ly threaded end 26g of the central tube 18 when the crown 26 is screwed thereon. By the use of a wrench applied upon the wrench-seat 26" of the flange 26i of said crown, the body thereof at the cutout part 26e rests upon the upper edge of the wall of the tube 18 and forms a strong, tight loint.
l Vithin the base-pipe 16 is rotatably held Vthe body-pipe 17 which consists of a lower part 17"l and an upper part 17", and to permit said parts to be securely connected, the upper end of the lower part 17a is made smaller in circumference than the lower end of the part 17" providing the neck 27, the outer surface of which is threaded, as at 28, and also forming the shoulders 29 on top of the wall of said part 17a. On the inner end of the part 17" threads 30 are provided which engage the threaded neck 27 when said part 17 is screwed thereupon by gripping the handles 31 formed on the exterior of the wall of the part 17". Any number yof the handles 31 may be provided, and are preferably Vmade integral with the wall of the part 17", each of said handles having downwardly projecting ends, 31a, the inner edges of which being' adapted to snugly lit the outer surface of the wall 17a over the shoulder 29. By this form of construction, it is clear, that the said connection of the parts 17a and 17" is sufficiently strengthened to adapt the body-pipe 17 to withstand any required strain to which it may be subjected.
As previously mentioned, the body-part 17 is rotatably held within the jacket or base-pipe 16 and by such an arrangement the nozzle is made expansible and provides the controlling means for the discharge of the straight stream of water. Upon the base of the part 17a of said body 17, a wide flange, as at 32, is formed, and the peripheral face thereof is provided with heavy threads, as at 33, for engagement with the inner threaded portion 34 of the base-pipe 16, thereby providing an ample bearing for the lower end of the body-pipe 17 during its -rotation in .operating the nozzle, and serving to prevent the said lower end from being weakened when subject to the force of the flow of water under high pressure. As a further bearing for holding the body-pipe 17 centrally disposed within the base-pipe 16, and also to provide against leakage at said bearing, a gland 35 having an annular ring 36, is arranged upon the upper end of said base-pipe 16, the said rin 36 having hexagonal faces on its outer sur ace forming a wrench-seat 37. F or a portion of its length the interior of the wall of the basepipe 16 is cut-out providing shoulders, as at 38, the surface of said cut-out part beine' threaded at 39 for rece tionof the threaded periphery 40, of a nec r 41 of the gland 35. lVhen said gland is screwed home the topedge of said neck rests upon the shoulders 38 at the-same time the underside of the annular-cap 36 closely contacts with the top-edge of the wall of t-he base-pipe 16, and a strong water-tight bearing is thus formed.
For some distance of its length the upper end of the part 17" of the body-pipe 17 is threaded on its outer surface, as at 42, and a substantially convex terminal 43 is formed by curving inwardly and outwardly the inner surface of -the wall of said part 17". Engaging the threaded outer end 42 of said part 17" are the threads 45 of a rotatably held cup-shaped annular cap or collar 46 Vforming the controlling means for distributing the cone-shaped spray or stream of water, and for its` convenient manipulation the said cap is provided with oneor a plurality of handles, as at 47. The interior of said cap 46 is cut-out forming the top 48 which extends outwardly so as to conform with the curvature of the convex terminal j 43 and parallel with the curved underside 26" of the concentric lip 26 of the crown 26. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the outlet 261 is open for the discharge of .the flared lsheet of water, and it is clear, that when rotated to move upwardly the cap 46 moves toa position, as at 49, shown in dotted lines. and closes the outlet 26d by contacting with the curved underside 26" of said crown 26,
thereby allowing the discharge of only7 the solid stream of water, or the said outlet may be only partly closed if preferred.
As shown, the tube 18 is considerably smaller' in dimension than the body-pipe 17 and within this pipe 17, the said tube is centrally disposed and connected rigidly thereto by the bridges 50, Figs. 1 and 4. Between the outer face of the wall of the central tube 18 and the inner face of the wall of the pipe 17 a passage 51 is formed for the How of the cone-shaped sheet of water which enters at the inlet 52 provided by spacing apart the lower ends of said bodypipe and the tube 18. The iow of the straight solid stream of water is directed through the channel 53 on the interior of the tube 18, and as a controlling means for the ingress and egress of the solid stream I arrange a valve 54 which is adapted to close a valve-seat 55 formed by the peripherally beveled inner edges at the inlet 57 of said tube 18. The valve 54 provided with a conical-shaped head 58, made of fiber, leather or other suitable material, is fastened by a bolt 59 having a screw-head 60, and a threaded end 61 engaging the threaded opening on top of a neck 62. This neck 62 has a flanged-base 63 resting on the upper surface of a peripherally threaded plate 64 provided with openings 64et and which is securely fastened by being screwed in an interiorly threaded part 641 at the base pipe 16, and underneath said flanged-base 63 of the neck 62 projects a stern 65 passing through a central hole in the plate 64, a tightening nut 66 holding the valve 54 firmly in position by engaging the threaded end of the stem 65.
From the foregoing it is obvious that my invention provides a very simple, durable and efficient form of expansible hose nozzle, which may be conveniently handled and readily operated for throwing a solid stream of water to a great height or distributing a sheet of water over a wide space either simultaneously or alternately for effectual use in connection with fire-fighting apparatus or for other purposes. It is also clear while 1 have shown and described certain preferred structural features that changes may be made in the shape and proportions of the parts forming the improved expansible nozzle without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention as described and illustrated, therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the particular form herein set forth.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

An eXpansible hose nozzle .of the character described, comprising a base-pipe having heavy threads formed in the inner wall thereof, a. rotatable body-pipe consisting of two securely connected parts, and having a wide base-flange provided with exterior threads for engagement with the inner threaded wall of the base-pipe, a convex terminal formed upon the inner upper end of the body-pipe, a central tube of smaller dimensions held by bridges within the bodypipe and adapted to move when the bodypipe is rotated, a channel for the iiow of a straight solid stream of water formed within the central tube, a passage for the flow of a circular sheet of water provided between the inner wall of the body-pipe and the outer wall of the central tube, an inlet to said passage formed between the lower ends of the body-pipe and central tube, a spout disposed from the upper end of the central tube, a cone-shaped valve mounted within the base-pipe and adapted to normally close the inlet to the channel, a crown interposed between the spout and the central tube and having a flared outwardly projecting base with an inwardly curved underside providing a deflecting wall adapted to form a cone-shaped sheet of water for distribution from the outlet of the passage, and means adapted to open and close said outlet, and means adapted to lift or lower the central tube off or upon the cone-shaped valve so as to open or close the outlet for the discharge of the straight solid stream of water from said spout.

An expansible hoze nozzle of the character described, comprising a base-pipe having an interiorly cut-out upper end and heavy threads formed in the body of the inner wall thereof, a rotatable body-pipe consisting of an upper and lower part securely connected, a wide base-flange provided eXteriorly of the lower end of the lower part and having exterior heavy threads for engagement with the inner threaded wall of the base-pipe, a convex terminal formed upon the inner end of the upper part, ,a tube centrally held by bridges within the body-pipe and adapted to move when the body-pipe is rotated, la channel for the flow of a straight solid stream of water formed within the central tube, a passage for the flow of a circular sheet of water provided between the inner wall of the body-pipe and the outer wall of the central tube, an inlet to said passage formed between the lower ends of the bodypipe and central tube, an outlet for the passage formed between the upper ends thereof, a iiared outwardly projecting crown held at the upper end of the centrally disposed tube and having a curved underside providing a deflecting wall adapted to form a cone-shaped sheet of water for distribution from the outlet of the passage, a rotatable cup-shaped collar held upon the free end of the upper part of the body-pipe and adapted to open and close the outlet of the passage, and means adapted to open and close the inlet to said central channel.
3. yAn expansible hose-nozzle of the character described, comprising a base-pipe having an interiorly cut-out upper end and provided with heavy threads formed in the body of the inner wall thereof, a rotatable body pipe consisting of an upper part provided with an eXteriorly threaded upper end and having an interiorly threaded lower end and =a lower part having an veXteriorly threaded neck screwed to the threaded lower end of said upper part, a wide base-flange provided exteriorly of the lower end of said lower part and having exterior heavy threads for engagement with the inner threaded wall of the base-pipe, a gland held within the cut-out upper end of the basepipe and adapted to form a water-tight bearing for the lower part of the body-pipe, handles provided upon the outer Ywall of the body-pipe for rotating said pipe, a tube having outer threads provided at its upperend centrally heldby bridges within the body-pipe and adapted to move when 'the body-pipe is rotated, a channel for the How of a straight solid stream of water formed within the central tube, a crown having a threaded interiorly cut-out lower end adapted to be screwed upon the threaded end of the central tube a wrench-seat provided on the exterior of the crown, a base having a flared concentric lip providing a deflecting wall for forming and'distributing a coneshaped stream of water arranged at the lower end of the crown, a spout screwed upon the upper end of the crown, a passage for the flow of a circular sheet of water provided between the inner wall of the body-pipe and the outer wall of the central tube, a cup-shaped collar having inner threads rotatably held upon the threaded upper end of the upper part of the bodypipe and adapted to close the outlet of the passage by contact with the deflecting wall of the crown, and a conical-shaped valve mounted upon an apertured disk rigidly held in the base-pipe, and adapted to close the inlet to the channel when the body-pipe is rotated downwardly.
ll. An eXpansible hose-nozzle of the character described, comprising a base-pipe having a cut-out upper end provided with inner threads and having heavy threads formed in the inner wall thereof, a rotatable body-pipe provided with an eXteriorly threaded upperend and having a wide base-flange provided with exterior threads for engagement with the threads in the inner wall of the basepipe, a convex terminal formed upon the inner upper end of the body-pipe, handles provided upon the outer wall of the body-pipe for rotating said pipe, a gland having a peripherally threaded neck and an annular cap and adapted to be screwed into the cut-out spout, a concentric annular lip with an inwardly curved underside forming a 'defiecting wall projecting outwardly from the crown, an inlet to the channel provided at the lower end of the central tube, a passage for the flow of a circular sheet of 'waterf formed between the inner wall of the bodypipe and outer-wall of the central tube, an inlet to said passage formed between the lower ends of the body-pipe and central tube, an outlet for the passage formed between the upper ends thereof, an annular collar provided with a cut-out threaded interior portion rotatably held upon the threaded upper end of the body-pipe and having a cupshaped top conforming with the curvature of the convex terminal and when rotated forming controlling means at the outlet of the passage for the discharge of the circular sheet of water, and a valve having a conicalshaped head mounted upon an apertured disk rigidly heldin the base-pipe and forming controlling lmeans at the inlet of the channel for the discharge -of the straight solid stream of water.

An eXpansible hose-nozzle of the character described, comprising a base-pipe having heavy threads formed inthe body of the inner wall and provided with an interiorly cut-out upper end, a rotatable body-pipe having an exteriorly threaded wide baseflange engaging the threads in the inner wall and adapted whenrotated to move inwardly or outwardly of the base-pipe, a convex terminal formed upon the inner upper end of said pipe, a gland having an annular cap and a neck adapted to fit in the cut-out upper end ofthe base-pipe for forming a watertight bearing for the body-pipe, a tube of smaller dimensions disposed centrally ofthe body pipe and held rigidly thereto by a bridge provided near the lower end of said tube, a channel for the 'flow of a straight solid stream of water formed within the tube, a spoutv held at the upper end of the tube, an outlet in the mouth of the spout, a crown arranged upon the central tube at the lower end of the spout, a concentric annular lip with an inwardly curved underside forming-a deflecting wall projecting outwardly from the crown, a passage for the flow of a circular sheet of water formed between the inner wall of the body-pipe and outer wall of the central tube,- an inlet to the channel at the lower end of the tube, a valveseat f-formed by peripherally beveled inner edges of the tube, a valve having a conical-shaped head adapted to close the inlet to the channel, the said valve resting upon and secured to an apertured plate screwed within the lower end ofthe base-pipe, handles provided upon the outer-wall of the body-pipe so as to raise or lower the centrally disposed tube when said pipe is rotated and thereby control the discharge of the straight solid stream of water and an annular collar having handles and provided with a cut-out threaded interior portion rotatably held upon the upper end of the body-pipe and having` a cup-shaped top conforming with the curvature of the convex terminal and adapted to control the distribution of the eone-shaped stream of water by opening or closing the outlet of the passage.
