Specification of Letters Patent.
Potent-ed Dee. ti. 1.911..
application filed July 29, 1911. Serial No. 641,216.
To all "10710111 it may concern.
1.50. it; lmown that I, WESLEY \Vmtnrr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of l'ilnelm'oll, in thi'icounty of Key and State ol Oklahoma, have invented a new and improved Compound Land-Roller, of which the following is a full, clear, and exnel le:-:i'ription.
The object of the invention is to provide :1 compound lnnd roller, so constructed and arranged. that itmay be used in rolling tint .srrt'nees and also for rolling in furrows. and further, ifor rolling the land between rows oi sprouting grain.
To the n m re ends, the invention consists of n coinpoinnl HLillfillttl land roller, and of the devices nnd combinations of devices which will he hereiinit ter described and claimed.
Reference is to he had to the accompanying drawings forming o part of this specichgirneters of ref erenre indicate corresponding parts in all the views, end in whicl Figure 1 shows the roller no on entirety, with all the sections in position for use, a portion being broken away and shown in z 'srt'tion to illustrate the meeting, connection between the furrow roller sections and n ljacent sections; Fig. 2 shows the roller as it is used in rolling in furrows; Fi 3 shows the roller as it; is used when rolling between the rows of standing grain on tint and FiQ. 5 shows a vertical sectional view through the frame or platform, and. shows in side elevation one of the sections for-rolling in furrows.
The nnichine comprises a suitable frame or platform A, construetei'l of any suitable ninterinl, from the under side of which cxtend depending brackets. a. which, as shown in Figs. 4- and of the drawing, will preferably he provided with a vertical standard 0. and nnguhn ly-nrrnnged braces a. The brackets a support, at their lower ends, hearings a", in Whieh Upon the shaft B is supported a. roller U, which is arranged to freely turn on said shaft its the apparatus is drawn over the ground.
A suitable tongue D is bolted to the top of the platform A, [or the purpose of hitching; a team to the apparatus, and also it may have u spring standard E bolted to the top utthe platform A or tothe rear of the is mounted a. she. l't B1" substantially zig=2a tongue I), to support it sent for the driver. which sent, ln'm'erer, is not shown in the drnwin". i
The roller (T is a. compound roller, (onz-strucied oi n. plnrnlit of sections arranged preferably in too groups, the groups lit-in designated a (,l, C, and tended upon each side of the center bracket (1, and between the center bracket. 0. and the end brackets as clearly shown in Figs. 1,2 and 3 of the drawing.
At each end Jot the shaft B are disposed sections 0, which nmy be regarded as wheel sections, and which are merely disks or wheels with plain sides; and preierahly the roller (1 will have intermediate sections (1, substantially like the sections 1.. Between the sections 0 and .e, there is a compound roller section, comprising disks or wheels a having upon one surface or side recesses 0. having beveled walls 0", and between the wheels or disks 0 there are mounted sec tions a, each of which has {in intermediate flat peripheral portion and beveled end portions nt either end, its sln'nrn at As shown clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawing, when the whole. is used as an entirety, the sections 0" will l e interposed between two of the sections in such it mnnner that the beveled end of the section 0' .will he received in the recesses of the sections l'refe ahly, the central section of the roller will. consist of a section suhstnntie ly like the section hut divided on a. llfn: cutting the tint peripheral surface at its center, thus t'tmniing two sections t having one flat end udjerenti the bracket a, and one beveled end 0. As shown in Fig. l, the peripheries of all the sections. will. he provided. with trons- Yerselyextending ribs D, such ribs extending diagonally across lint peripheral sur faces, and in practice, the ribs of one section will he nngldurly4'lisposed with relation to the ribs oi the nextndjaeent section.
hen it is intended to use the roller for rolling, plain and lint surfaces, as shown in Fig. '1 of the drawings, all the sections of the wheel will he employed, and the parts "a will be arranged as therein shown, thus forming ,a. practically continuous roller, with radinllyextending ribs on its periphery in form. Nhen it is desired to roll in he furrows of listed, land, all the sections are removed with the exception of the sections a and c. and for the purpose of keeping these sections from the shaft at either side of t havin a longitudinal movement of any extent a ong the shaft B, suitable stop collars B will'be secured to the shaft by means of set screws 6, a collar bein mounted on e sections 0 and 0. Thus the sections a and 0' will be held to the shaft in a substantially fixed osition and in position to act properly wit in the furrows of the listed land. Should it be desired to roll the land between rows of buddin grain, the sections a and 0" will be remove and the sections 0, c and 0 will be left upon the shaft B, leaving spaces B between groups of adjacent sections, within which the buddin grain may be received, and the land rolle at each side of the row of grain, without liability of injuring the grain.
It will be noted that by the construction shown and described, there will be provided practically three separate, and distinct rolling machines; namely, a roller for listed ground; a roller for rolling between the rows of budding grain, and a roller for flat land.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and ters Patent 1. A land roller, of plain disks and groups of a thel members of which have mating beveled en s.
2. A land roller comprising a plurality of sections arranged in, groups, the end sections of the groups having beveled recesses in one face, and the ,intermediate section having beveled ends to, fit said recesses.
3. A land roller, comprising a plurality of sections arranged in roups, the end secdesire to secure by Letcdmprising a plurality J tions of the groupshavmg beveled recesses in one face, and the intermediate section having beveled ends to fit said recesses, a shaft upon which said sections are mounted, and adjustable collars for positioning the sections on the shaft.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
