HARP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 5, 1911.
Patented Dec. 5, 1911.
Serial No. 642,497.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Earn. 0. STAnKn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Harps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harps and has for its object to provide a new and improved device of this description.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view of a harp embodying my invention with parts broken away; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View taken on line 8-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 1 is a View of the supporting connecting piece connecting the sound-board with the pedestal; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Like numbers refer to like parts throughout the several figures.
I have shown in the accompanying drawings a harp having a pillar 1 mounted upon the pedestal 2 provided with a sound board 3 which is connected to the pedestal and to which the strings 5 of the harp are attached. The sound board is connected to the pedestal by means of a supporting and connecting device 6, which is illustrated in Fig. 1. This device consists of a supporting arm 7 provided. with a series of holes 8 for screws or other connecting devices by means of which it is rigidly connected with the sound board. The piece 7 is not directly connected to the sound board; it is connected to a brace 9 which is supported at its ends and which engages the sound board. The piece 7 is provided with a base 10 which projects at an angle therefrom, said base being provided with two arms, each arm having the portion 11 substantially parallel with the sound board and the portion 12 substantially parallel with the base 10 but in a different horizontal plane. The base 10 is fastened in any suitable manner as by means of the screws 13, to the cross piece 1 1, which in turn is connected with the pedestal. The brace 9 passes between the arms of the base 10 and extends into or through the cross piece 14. The base 10 rests upon the top of the cross piece 1 1 and the portions 11 of the arms engage the inclined edge of the cross piece 14 and are connected thereto in any desired manner as by means of screws 15. The portions 12 of the arms attached to the base 10 pass in under the sound board 8 and the top piece 16 of the pedestal and are fastened to the top piece 16 in any de sired manner as by the screws 17. It will thus be seen that these arms attached to the base 10 act as lever arms to prevent the tipping of the base 7. This device, therefore, forms a rigid yet light and simple connection between the sound board and the pedestal or base of the instrument and insures the holding of the parts in their proper relation. The supporting and connecting device is concealed fromv view by the back 18. In addition to the holes 8 in part 7 for the screws or other attaching means, said part is provided with holes 19 through which pass the strings 5 which are connected to the lower part of the sound board. These strings, as shown in Fig. 3, pass through the sound board and the brace 9 and the part 7 and may be held in place in any desired manner as by being looped over a pin 20 resting on a washer 21.
I claim:
1. A harp comprising a pedestal, a sound board, a connecting device for connecting the sound board with the pedestal comprising a piece substantially parallel with the sound board and connected therewith, a base with which said piece is connected and two arms connected with said base, the ends of said arms extending beneath the top piece of the pedestal.
2. A harp comprising a sound board, a pedestal, a support for the sound board comprising a piece substantially parallel with the sound board, a base connected with said piece, and two arms connected with said base, said arms having a portion substantially parallel with the sound board.
3. A harp comprising a sound board, a pedestal, a supportfor the sound board com prising a piece substantially parallel with the sound board, a base connected with said piece, two arms connected with said base, said arms having a portion substantially parallel with the sound board, and a piece substantially parallel to the said base.
4. A supporting device for the sound. board of a harp comprising a base, a part projecting therefrom and adapted to be connected with the sound board, and two arms projecting from said base, said arms each provided with a portion at an angle to said base, the end portions of said arms being substantially parallel to said base.
5. A harp comprising a sound board, a brace therefor, a connecting device comprising a piece connected with said brace, a base connected with said piece and two arms projecting from said base and between which said brace extends.
6. A harp comprising a sound board, a
brace therefor, a connecting device comprising a piece connected with said brace, a base connected with said piece, two arms projecting from said base and between which said brace extends, and a support for said base, a portion of said arms being bent so that the ends thereof are in a diti'erent horizontal plane from the plane of the base.
