Letters Patent No. 101,081, dated Irlarch 22, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR SCJRAJE'IIT G LEATHER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, JAMES T. BARNSTEAD, of Peabody, in the county. of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Scraping Leather, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the combination of a knife or knives and brushes, fixed in a swinging frame, in
such a manner that they are made to reciprocate over a suitable bed and remove the superfluous grease or stuffing from the leather, the operation which is now usually performed by'hand-labor before the leather is whitened.
The drawing represents a side elevation of a machine elnbodying my invention.
A is the frame, made of wood or iron in a substantial manner.
B- is the concave bed, upon which the leather is placed.
This bed is supported by the standards 0, which rest upon springs D,which are made adjustable, so as to adjust the height of the bed, and to regulate its elasticity.
The standards E support a penduluni, F, to which the knife I is attached.
The pendulum is made in two parts and jointed at G, so that the knife is raised clear of theleather at the return stroke.
The brush H is placed opposite the knife I, and is for the purpose of cleaning the leather after the knife has scraped it.
.The brush'K is attached to a thin strip of ,metal, L, which is attached to the upper part of the pendulum.
The brush K clears the knife of the grease which collects upon it at each stroke. The brush passes down over the knife upon each return stroke of the pendulum. v
The distance of the brush from the knife is adjusted by the screw M.
Power is applied to the pendulum through the pitman N, which is attached to a crank, and the pendulum is connected to the pitman just below the joint G.
In this machine the operation of the knife is to scrape off the partially-dried grease on the surface of the leather, and the brush following the knife removes the loose particles of the grease or stutfing and cleans the leather, thus fitting it more perfectly for the whitening process, avhile the knife is kept clean by the brush K.
No claim of novelty is made to the spring bed or the jointed reciprocating pendulum carrying a knife.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a machine for scraping leather, the combination of the knife I and brush H, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
2. The brush K, for the purpose of cleaning the knife, arranged and operated in the manner described and shown. h'
18 JAMES 'l. i- BARNSTEAD.
