INDICATING TAIL-LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec.5, 1911.
Application filed August 26, 1910. Serial No. 579,166.
The invention relates to tail lamps for I automobiles and thelike, and particularly to a lamp adapted to indicate to the party in charge of a vehicle following the one pro vided with the said lamp that the saidve hicle is aboutto stop or slow down.
It hasfor its object: to provide a lamp for this purpose which may be constructed at reasonable cost, be-readily assembled and attached to anautomobile or the-,li-keiand be provided with a suitable changeabl'eex-f hibitor. 1 It has for its further object to so construct the same that a registry number late may be carried thereby and be illummated, as required by law.
- The nature of my invention will Ibebest understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in Which'- Figure 1 is a side elevation-of 'anautQ -mobile and lamp-attached to the rear thereof. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, on an enlarged scale, of automobile and lamp attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and
' -Fig-. 4t a side elevation, of the lamp frame.
Fig. 5 is a horizontalsection"througlioneF "of the lamp chimneys 7 Fig. 61s a; vertical sect-ion of'the lamp and-Fig.7 ahorizontal section-taken-onthe line 77 -Fig. 6. ,Fi'g's.
"8 and 9 are vertical}sections takenon the lines 8+8, and 9+9 respectivelyQFig. 7,
Similar characters-inf- Jr'eference' designate;
corresponding; parts "throughout the several views.
Referring now to thedrawings, 2(l j designates a suitable frame for the lamp and by means of'which the same may be attached to the rear of an automobile orthe like, as through the lugs 21. This frameis provided.
at each end with vertical guides22, and at the bottom at each end-with projections or ledges 23 to support a horizontal oilitank 24. to contain the oil for the lamps 19 mounted at the ends of the same. A suit able frame, or preferably a box, 25 'rests upon the said oil container, and the same is provided with a window 26 having alter nateopaque and transparent sections 27 and 28 respectively. This box receives light from the lamps 19; and within the same is mounted for horizontal movement, a slide '29 upon which is inscribed a suitable warning such asthe word Slow, shown in Fig.
2. The letters of said warning are of translucent material and are arranged to corre spond with the sections27 and 28; that is to say, when the slide is in one position, the
letters are all behind the respective opaque section's 27, and when in the other position, they are behind and visible through the transparent sections 28 being illuminated from thelightIin the box 25v received from lamps 19. A lever 30 connects with-this moved'through mechanism- (not shown) to display the warning. From the ends of the. frame or box 25 .ex-
tend vertical guides 17 provided with verti-' cal openings 18-, said guides being adapted slide and by means of which the same is to receive and hold a detachable. chimney forming with said guides 17 suitable ,chim}.
,neysfor the respective lamps, Closing the openings 18 in the guides andheld in the' guide-way 40 providedby the said'guides 17 and chimney pieces 37,-are double-corrugated, semi-prismatic sheets of glass 41 which are adapted'fto raise the light from the corresponding lamps and cause the same piece 37 fitting downv over the 1amps[19 to be projected acrossthe space between said chimneysto suitably illuminate a-registry number plate 42, hung onfithe frame 20. These glass strips may be secured against rattling in" anysuitable manner, las for example, byz'meansof thespurs 13cut from the guides 17 The said chimney pieces are provided withj..vertical locking members 44 well, as the oil container 24, are securely at tached to the frame 20.
'53 covers the said cap.
suitable perforations =51 on its under face and with'openings 52 in the cap. A hood Access to the lamps 19 for the purpose of lighting the same is gained through suitable 0 enings 54 in the chimne ieces 37 and W ich are normally closed by a gravity slide or door piece 55 mounted in a casing 56 secured to the said chimney piece. The knob 57 of the said door is ofglass '(red) through which the light from the lamps is adapted to shine when the door is in the normal,.lowered position and to thereby display a warning light.
The lamp'herein set forth is very simply constructed, portable, readily cleaned, pro-' vides a double warning light, illuminates the registry number plate; and, in addition matically warning a vehicle following the same of its slowing down, whereby accidents due to this-cause are prevented.
