BATTERY-ELEMENT SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SOHOEN- MEI-IL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Battery-Element Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to primary batteries of the class employing compressed copper oxid and zinc plates as their electrodes and commonly used on railroad signal work.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide a round fiat circular disk formed of compressed copper oxid plate and a novel form of frame for supportingthe same from abattery jar cover and to design the frame so that it can be manufactured in a simple,
practical and inexpensive manner thusproducing an exceptionally cheap form of de-- vice; to construct the device'in such a manner that the edge portions only of the negative element will be engaged thus having the sides thereof exposed for action; to make the frame self-adjusting so to speak, that is, to construct it so that the elements can be readily and securely attached by a simple practical and convenient means and finally-to form the negative electrode frame portion proper of a single piece or if preferred to have them adjustably hinged together, as will later be more fully explained. In practice these circular forms of frames may be formed from a continuous strip of sheet metal which would be first rolled to form it into a channel and then wound upon a round mandrel, somewhat like a spring is wound, which windings would then be au-, tomatically cut to form rings or half rings whereupon the ends of such rings or circular forms of frame members would be punched and shaped to permit of their connection and attachment to the block etc.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a form of anode and frame that will be better adapted for use in a battery jar whose intermediate portion is larger than the upper or lower portion and wherein said electrode would conform to the shape of the jar, and the several portions thereof correspond with the quantities of solution contained therein, that is an electrode the intermediate part of which is larger than either the top or bottom part to agree with the larger bulk of solution as contained in the intermediate part of a jar that is largest through its intermediate part as for instance, like that shown in my copending application #544,632.
To these ends the invention consists and resides in the features and arrangement of construction shown upon the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification upon which similar characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several figures .of the accompanying drawings, and of which,
Figure 1, shows a side view of my improved circular form of electrode supporting frame with a correspondingly shaped negative electrode secured therein and a similarly shaped positive plate attached to the said frame, said parts being shown as suspended from a battery jar cover. Fig. 2, is an edge view ofthe construction shown in Fig. 1, but with both of the positive plates shown attached. Fig. 8, shows a detail side View of the sheet metal frame part of the holder, the proportions and lower portion thereof being slightly different from that shown in Fig. 2-, and Fig. 4, is a cross section through the said electrode supporting frame.
Referring to the reference characters marked upon the drawings 5 indicates the negative elect-rode which is preferably a.
baked compressed oxid of copper type of plate, and of a rounded or circular form' :engage the face portions of the edge of the plate to hold the same against side movement while contained within the frame. In cross section this frame is therefore a U or channel shape to properly engage and hold the plate as stated. In Fig. 3, I have shown the overlapping side portions of said frame cut away at the lower end as at 9 to better permit the two side portions of the frame to be bent back and apart at this point to open the same and to allow of the intro duction of the plate after which it can be further bent to return it to its normal position against the plate.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown the frame formed of two parts, the lower portion-of one being provided with a hole 10 while the other member is provided with an extended tongue 11 designed to be passed through the hole and returned against the outside of the frame as shown, to pivotally connect the two parts together and thus better expedite the introduction and fastening of the negative electrode in the frame. The upper end portions 12 of the frame are disposed vertically and substantially parallel with each other and are punched to form a hole through which a bolt 13 is passed and secured as in the attachment of the frame to an insulating block 14 secured intermediate thereof. This insulating block may be further provided wit-h a hole 15 arranged crosswise or at a right angle to the bolt 13 and through which a second bolt 16 is passed as for the attachment of the positiy e plates 6. Hangers 17 are also securely connected to the positive plate 6 through the medium of the said bolt 16 and by means of which the united parts are suspended from the battery cover 18 through the attachment of the outside bolt 19 passing through a lug on the top side of said cover. One of the field wires 20 is connected to this bolt 19 to connect with the positive side of the battery while the other field wire 21 is attached to the bolt 13 which forms a direct connection to the frame and the negative elect-rode.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an elect-rode support for batteries, the combination of a fiat circular shaped compressed negative plate, circular shaped channel frame members suitably hinged together, and adapted to engage the edge portions of said plate, means for drawing together and positively securing the free ends of the frame to engage said electrode, and means for suspending the same from a battery jar cover.
2. In an electrode support for batteries, the combination of a fiat circular shaped compressed negative plate, a circular shaped channel frame made in two parts, said parts being pivotally connected together at one side and inclosing the edges of the plate, means for drawing together and uniting the free sides of said frame, an insulating block connected to the frame, positive electrodes secured to said insulating block, and means for suspending the part-s from a battery jar cover.
3. An electrode support for batteries, comprising a flat circular shaped compressed negative electrode, two semicircular shaped frame members having a hole in the end of one of said members, a tongue formed on the other member and adapted to be threaded through the hole of the first named member for pivotally securing the two together, means for drawing together and positively connecting the other ends of the frame members and means for supporting the whole from the cover of a battery J at. In an electrode support for batteries, the combination with a flat circular shaped compressed negative plate, of two circularly shaped sheet metal frame members suitably secured together and adapted to encircle the plate and having unbroken side edges turned over upon the portion of the face adjoining its edges, and means for supporting the same from a battery cover.
