Description

,FRANKLIN L; LANE, OF BnLoIrfwiscoNsrN, AssIeNon To THE BERLIN MnCnrNn WORKS, OF BELOIT, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION or WISCONSIN.
rLANEl-ifinirnnotnme rnv-ICE.
` To all whom fit may concern:
Be it' known that I, FRANKLIN L. .IIJN`E,
` a'citizen Ofthe UnitedStates, residing -at Beloit, in the countyof Rock and State of f Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planer-Knife-Holding Devices, of' which the followingI is a specification.
I The main object of .this invention is the 'provision of a simple means for holding planer -knives Iin their cylinders which will securely maintain the 'knives in proper working position. without danger of becoming .loose or ineffective in their knife-holding` function.
'Another salient feature ofthe invention i .-is the production of a holding means of thls [character which Awill be partlcularly simple j inconstruction and economical to manufacl ture.
On the accompanylng drawing, which formsa part lofthis specification, I have illustrated a desirable embodiment of this invention and in such drawing, Figure 1 is a section through a' planer cylinder equipped` with one form 4of my improved vlmife. holding means, some, of J the wedge.
blocks being shown in section, others being 'shown in full lines, while' stillv another is 3o omitted to more clearl .indicate .thel construction.l Fig. 2 is a p an view. of a planen cylinder supplied with the improvedhold# .fing means, andFig. 3 is va perspective-view of one of the cylindrical wedge blocks.
`By reference` to this drawing it. will be `noticed that the planer cylinder,I 10, is supplied with a plurality oflongitudinally disposed. recesses 11, along its periphery 'and supplied for the purpose ofsaccommodat 40 Aing the various .planer knives Adjacent to each of .such knife recessesand opening into or communicating therewith, I'supply.
the cylinder with a plurality:ofcylindrical--v cavities 13, extended inwardly from the outer face of the cylinder," asis clearlyillusuter surface 1 6, Ofveach ofsuch wedge' locks is referably curved to .conform to the cylin ical surface ofthe cylinderyl.
`modationfof the head 19, of a-holding or .the screws have been removed, eachis knivesfare heldin place by two cooperating gwedges, the screw-threads of. the screws 20 Each of suchwedge blocks has afsubs'tantially central recess or aperture-17, extend-,fA ed therethrough, such aperture being en# larged at 18, at its'outer endfor the accom- '60 adjusting screw 20, which extends .through the' hole 17 and coperates withfthe' threads of.a screwthreaded .hole or extension`21 in the cylinder at the base of the cavity 13. As i I have clearly shown, the v'head ,191 of-- the screw bears against the shoulderin I,the block at the junction of the parts 17 'andlS of the `aperture extended therethrough. ',In order to facilitate the removal of ,such wedge blocks from their receiving cavities when 70.
equipped with a recess or hole 22, into which the end of a hook 'or other lremoving means may b`e `appl `1 ed to effect such removal.
The parts are assembled by-.placing the knife 12 in its recess 11, inserting the wedge blocks 14 intheir cavities 13, 'with' the wedge surfaces 15 against the lm ives .12, and then introducing the retaining screws 20, which act to force-the wedge blocks-:Tnwardly and.4 clamp the :knife between themselves and .the oppositeawall ','ofltherecess 11, all as' will be readily. understood by thosesklledin .this l art. It will be nerticed that 'ix-f reality, these constituting one wedge.m eans,` the beveled l' Yfaces ofthe blocks lfl'representin'g the other coactin'g wedge. It shouldbe noticed that' because the cavities 13 are of cylindrical form, they maybe readily drilled into the cylinder; also `the wed e blocks 414:, owing Ato their generalcylin ical form, canbeprovided at a' minimum expense.. Another eature of advantageof thisconstruction resides in the. fact that n ov portion of the- Vholding means for theknives projects out wardly beyond the peripher or' c `ligulli'gi-lv surface-0f the cylinder. y y 4.,-
'Whereasl have herein-indicated one'partlculalnembodlnent ofthe invention, Iwish v to'have itunderstoodzthatthe' invention-is susceptible of embodiment in a cons'ijderable'r j l variety of forms.y and that it th'efore'not limited toe the precisev and e'i'xact :features I'of structure lmentionedtand lillustratedin con` -nection with this particular YAform Yof' ho1ding-means. It will be apparentthrefore, i A that wlthoutdepa'rtiire from the substance and essence'of the 1nvention.`many minor 110 es 19ov los" a mechanical changes may he niade in the parts illustrated and described.
