To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, DELFINO DE ROSA, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Chisholm, in the county of Franklin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guard Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to an improved guard device for the cords or ropes of an automatic fire alarm system of that character shown and described in my pending application filed April 18, 1910, Serial Number 556,105.
The object of the present invention resides in the provision of a simple and efiicient guard which also acts as a support for the cords or wires which are extended over the walls of the various apartments of a building so as to afford protection for the same and prevent them-being cut by a knife or other sharp instrument in the hands of a malicious person and thus giving a false alarm.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary diagrammatic view of a portion of a building showing the application of my improved protecting guard in a system of the above mentioned character; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail transverse section illustrating the manner of attaching the guard to the wall; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the device.
In my prior application a fire. alarm system is shown embodying a plurality of alarm actuating devices and a system of cords or ropes extending through the various rooms of the building whereby when any one of the cords is burned through by a flame originating in the room, the alarm is operated. It is for the purpose of protecting these cords so that they will not be inadvertently or intentionally severed by other causes than fire, that my improved guard device is provided.
The guard, as more clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing comprises a continuous spirally coiled wire rod 5 which is adapted to be secured to the wall W of the room adjacent to the floor, by means of the staples or other fastening devices 6 which engage upon the coils of the wires. Through this coiled wire guard the cord C which controls the alarm operating devices extends and is movable. The coils of the Wire guard are spaced a suflicient distance apart to admit a very small flame so that the alarm will be sounded at the start of the fire. The guard also holds the cord in its proper position alongside of the walls of the apartment so that it cannot be accidentally pulled away from the same and broken. Upon the coils of the rod 5 a longitudinally extending wire 7 is arranged. This wire may be of the same or heavier gage than the wire 5 and is soldered or otherwise secured thereto. will be noted from referenceto Fig. 2 that the wire 7 is disposed along the front edge of the guard at its center thereby affording protection for the rope or cord which passes through the same while the bottom of the guard between the coils remains open so that the flames may readily pass between the same and ignite the cord.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by means of my improved guard device the alarm controlling cords are properly protected against being severed by falling articles which might be accident-ally dropped by the occupant of the apartment, while at the same time the operation of the alarm system is in no manner affected.
The device is extremely simple and very eflicient in practical use. It may also be manufactured at a low cost and can be easily and quickly installed.
