To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMMA E. WILLS, a

' citizen of the United States, residing at Chetopa, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Testers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the art of incubation, and comprises essentially a novel form of device for testing the fertility of eggs.

The invention comprises particularly a sight-tube adapted to be fitted to the head of the person, and through which he may examine the egg in process of incubation, the tube or body of the testing device being preferably made of flexible material not only to cheapen the same but to enable it to be collapsed to economize space in transportation, special means being provided for causing the portion of the tube fitting against the head to conform with the shape of the latter.

The invention resides also in' other specific features of construction, the form and advantages of which will be presented more fully hereinafter.

For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a testing device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a view showing the device collapsed as when out of use.

Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.

The present invention affords an exceedingly simple, cheap and advantageous device for the purpose for which it is de-v signed, the tester being composed primarily of a sight-tube or body 1, made of fabric or flexible material and tapering toward one end. At the larger end, the sight-tube 1 is cut away at its upper and lower portions to form curved seats 2 conforming with the shape of the head of a person using the device, and head straps 3 of elastic are provided.

The end portions of the tube or body 1 along the seats 2 are reinforced peculiarly by means of a flexible Wire strand, or similar part 5, the object in employing the latter being to enable the user of the device to shape the lower portion of the member 1 at the lower seat 2 in such a way that said portion will conform with the shape of the nose to cause the end of the tube fitting against the head to rest in close contact therewith, excluding all light or rays which would interfere with quickly and readily determining the fertility of the egg under test. By manipulating the flexible reinforcement 5 so as to bend the same properly, the shape 1 or curvature of the larger end of the tube 1 may be altered and such shape retained until further manipulation.

A suitable binder 6 is preferably provided at the larger end of the body 1 and a similar' binding strip 7 is employed at the smaller end adjacent to which is also located the egg rest 8 in the form of a small curved basket on which the egg is supported while held in the hand and pressed against the open smaller end of the device.

The rest 8 is preferably of concave form and may be pivotally connected at 9, near the side portions thereof, to the small end of the sight-tube 1. A small retaining catch 10 secured to the smaller end of the tube 1 will hold the rest 8 in its operative position when the device is in use but may be disengaged from the rest to permit the latter to be folded into the tube 1 preparatory to collapsing the same after use.

Located in the tube 1 intermediate the ends thereof is a magnifying lens 11 detachably held in place by small spring catches 12, a plurality of which are secured by rivets or other fastenings to the inner wall of the tube. The ends of the catches 12 facing the larger end of the tube are free and yieldable outwardly by reason of the flexibility of the tube 1 so as to permit the lens 11 to be readily removed or placed in position according to the desire of the user of the contrivance.

The flexibility of the body or tube 1 of the testing device, and the detachability of the lens 11 permit the device to be collapsed into a substantially flat position, whereby space is economized for sending the device in the mails, or otherwise.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. An egg tester comprising a flexible tapering tubular body, head attaching means at the larger end of the body for securing the device to the person, and a rest pro jecting from the lower portion of the smaller end of the body adapted to be folded into the body preliminary to collapsing of the latter.

2. An egg tester comprising a flexible tapering tubular body, head attaching means at the larger end of the body for securing the device to the person, a rest projecting from the lower portion of the smaller end of the body adapted to be folded into the body preliminary to collapsing of the latter, and a detachable lens fitted in the body intermediate its ends.

3. An egg tester consisting of a flexible tapering tubular body, head attaching means at the larger end of the body for securing the device to [the person, a rest projecting from the lower portion of the smaller end vof the body adapted to be folded into the body preliminary to collapsing of the latter,

and a catch for normally holding "the rest in an operative position, a lens fitted in the body intermediate the ends of the same, and catches holding said lens in anoperative position and yieldable by reason of the flexibility of the body to release the lens.

4. An egg tester consisting of a flexible tapering tubular body, head attaching means at the larger end of the body, a lens fitted in the body intermediate the ends of the latter, and catches holding said lens in operative position and yieldable by reason of the flexibility the lens.
