Be. it, known that l, Janus F. McBinXnY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Hartford, county of Hartford. and State of Connecticut, haveinvented certain Improvements in Type-\Vriting Machiues, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new organization comprising means for provision of any desired number of so-called silent keys in the key-board. either to the right or left of the longitudinal center of the machine, for printing accents and for other purposes where an impression is made without feed of the carriage.

18 is one ofthe ordinary letter bars operated by a link 19 extending forward to the end of a push pin 20 to which also is.connected the rear end of a link 21 rocking about a fixed axis or anchor point 22. On the link 19 in front of the pivot of its type bar is a projection 10 to which is jointed the front end of alink 10 whoserear end is hooked over the universal bar 10. A coiled spring serving to hold the parts in normal position has one end connected LO projection 10 and the other to a transverse horizontal plate 25 mounted at the back of the machine. All the printing keys that operate the universal bar are similarly arranged. When such a key is depressed the type bar will be pulled to the printing point by link i and the universal bar be drawn forward by link 10 to actuate both the ribbon vibrator and escapement.
The construction thus far described is substantially that; of the Royal Typewriter Companys Standard machine.
Provision for a plurality of so-called silent: keys is made as follows: A rock shaft 93 is mounted to turn in bearings 24 on the horizontal plate 25 havingat each end slotted upturned parts 26 by which the plate may be bolted as at. 27 to the rear part of the frame of the machine. Preferably. this rock shaft is mounted in rear of the universal bar, and is parallel therewith. Centrally secured to the rock shaft is a projection or wiper arm 28 adapted to strike the rear end of the link 7. As shown it engages a shoulder 8 0n the link. A spring 29 normally tends to rock the shaft 23, as viewed in Fig. l. in the direction in which turn the hands of a watch. On each side of the wiper 2S. :1 pair of arms 4-9 is secured to the rock shaft and extending between the upper ends of such arms is a rod 30. 31 is the finger piece of a silent key, shown in this instance as a push pin 32 haviu connected to its lower end a link 21 rocking atthe frontabout a fixed point 92'. and also a link 19 connected at its rear end to the heel ,of a type bar 3;. pin 31, 32, is depressed, the type bar 33 is thrown to the printing point, and the link 36 draws forward the rod 30 rocking the shaft and carrying for'ward the wiper 28 which, striking the rear end of the ribbon vibrator link 7, 8, operates the ribbon vibrator. The escapement, however, remains inoperative since no movement is imparted to the universal bar. The rods 30 disposed respectively on opposite sides of the center of the machine may be of such length as is desired. The arms 49 that carr them are secured to the rock shaft 23 ad ustably by means of the set screws 38. There is or may be provided thereforeamcans of connection for the links 36, of a plurality of silent keys located at any point in the key boardeither to the right or left of the center. The construction is such as to afford the greatest number of silent keys that could possibly be employed under any circumstances.
l igs. l and 5 show a slight, and indeed an obvious modification of the construction. The rod-5 30 are omitted and the rock shaft 23 turns in end bearings 23'. There is adjustably secured upon the rock shaft by means of a set screw 39 a plate 40 apcrtured or slotted at 4-1 for the reception of the rear hooked end of a silent key link 36. Any desired numter of such plates 40 located at any point in the length of the rock shaft may be used. Some one of the plates 10 may have applied to it the spring 29 indicated in Figs. 2 and 4 one cndof the spring bearing against the franicof the machine and the other engaging an aperture 4-2 in the plate. -10 or the arm 49 asthe case may be. Sccurcd centrally'upon the rock shaft is an arm or wiper 28 shown, in this instance. as long enough to contact with the rear end of the lower bifurcation at the end of link 7. Of course, the silent key or push pin 31, 32 should have a spring to return all parts to normal position. This spring maybe arranged or located in any way desired. The universal bar may be retracted by the spring 50 applied to the ribbon vibrator bell-crank.
I claim:

2. The combination with the platen, type bars, finger pieces, operative connections between the finger pieces and type bars comprising type bar operating links that pull the type bars to the printing point, a suspended universal bar, link connections from the major number of the last named links to the universal bar, a ribbon vibrator and escapement devices both actuated by the universal bar, a transversely disposed rocking member provided with means for actuating the ribbon vibrator without actuation of the escapement and also with means for connection of a plurality of links extending from some of the type bar operating links.
3. The combination with the platen, typebars, universal bar, escapement devices and ribbon vibrator devices, of an operating push pin for each type bar, two links connected to each push pin, one having its front end mounted to rock about a fixed point and the other having its rear end connected to its type-bar, a draw link for each of the major number of type-bars actuated when its type bar is actuated and engaging at its rear end the universal bar, a transversely arranged member extending on both sides of the center of the machine, movable back and forth and having means for actuating the ribbon vibrator without actuation of the escapemcnt, one or more draw links actuated hen some other of the type bars are actuated and engaging attheir rear ends said movable member.

The combination of a platen, type bars, linger pieces, type bar operating links actuated by the finger pieces to pull the type E bars to the printin point, a universal bar,

6. In a visible typewriting machine, the combination of platen, a ribbon vibrator, escapcment devices, pivoted type bars, finger pieces corresponding with the type bars, type bar operating devices interposed between the finger pieces and their respective type bars, a universal bar, operative connections corresponding with the major number of the finger pieces and normally engaging the universal bar and operated to actuate it on depression of their finger pieces, means by which the universal bar actuates the ribbon vibrator and the escapementdevices, a transversely disposed movable silent key member, means by which said member actuates the ribbon vibrator, and operative connections between a plurality of the finger pieces and said silent, key member.
7. In a visible typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a ribbon vibrator,
escapeinent devices, pivoted type bars, finger pieces corresponding with the type bars, type bar operating devices interposed between the finger pieces and their respective type bars, a-universal bar, operative connections corresponding with the major num ber of the finger pieces and normally engaging the universal bar and operated to actuateit on depression of their finger pieces, means by which the universal bar actuates the ribbon vibrator and the escapement devices, a transversely disposed movable silent key member, extending on both sides of the horizontal center of the machine, means by which saidmember actuates the ribbon vibrator, and operative connections between a plurality of the finger pieces and said silent key member.
